Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What religion was William Penn?

Answer: Quaker

In 1647 George Fox started the Quaker religion in England answering a need for the many people who were tired of the "showmanship" of traditional churches, Fox taught that Christ was to be experienced directly and not through an intermediate ritual and/or minister ('reverend'). Fox's people called themselves "Friends" but adopted the sobriquet "Quakers" which was at first meant to ridicule the way many of them shook as they prayed to God.
2. Where was William Penn born?

Answer: London, England

His father was the highly respected Admiral Sir William Penn.
3. In 1677 a group of important men all from Penn's religion received a land area in the Colonies for them to settle. Penn himself remained in England but wrote a government for this new community. In what part of the US was this land area located?

Answer: Western New Jersey

About 200 setlers from England founded the town of Burlington. Today Burlington, New Jersey is an active township.
4. On March 4, 1681 King Charles II gave to William Penn a large area of land to colonize himself. Why did the King give all this valuable land to Penn?

Answer: To settle a large debt that he had with Penn's father.

Penn wanted to call the land "Sylvania" but the King wanted to recognize Penn's father and insisted it be called "Pennsylvania". So Pennsylvania is not named after William Penn as many people mistakenly believe; it is named after his father.
5. Penn lived in his new colony from 1682 to 1684 (and 1699 to 1701) where he implemented a most impressive and advanced form of democratic government. He also tolerated people of all different religious beliefs. His political ideals were a great inspiration for the US founding fathers. Philadelphia was the first city that Penn planned and built in his colony, what does the word "Philadelphia" mean?

Answer: Brotherly love.

There was an ancient western Asian Minor (now modern day Turkey) city named Philadelphia, it is discussed in the Bible in the Book of Revelation 3:7. It was this Bible reading that Penn probably had in mind when he named the city.
6. Penn guaranteed all people living in his colony religious freedom. What did this mean?

Answer: All people were free to choose their Faith as long as they believed in God.

This idea of religious freedom was what the US based its position of freedom of religion, only slightly modified from Penn's rule.
7. Penn treated the Indians of Pennsylvania with great fairness. Penn even learned some Indian languages so as to better communicate with them. The Great Treaty made with the Indians, that provided them with a substantial amount of money for their land, was made under __________?

Answer: Elm Tree.

There is a famous stone carving of this event in the US Capitol Rotunda.
8. Penn was an early abolitionist and worked hard to fight slavery.

Answer: False

This is almost certainly false because Penn himself owned and traded slaves. However, he was known to treat his slaves with respect and kindness.
9. Is the smiling man on the Quaker Oats box meant to be the likeness of William Penn?

Answer: No

This urban legend has been discounted by the makers of Quaker Oats.
10. What is known in Philadelphia as "The Curse of Billy Penn"?

Answer: Philadelphia sports teams cannot win championships.

There was a "gentlemen's agreement" in Philadelphia not to build any structure higher than the brim of the statue of William Penn's hat that stood atop City Hall. This "agreement" was broken in the late 1980s and since then no major Philadelphia sports team had won a championship, under the Phillies in 2008. It's hard to believe that such a devout man could be so vengeful, but the longer Philly teams continue to lose the more plausible this "curse" becomes!
