Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As we look at the game, the board, and many of the cards, we see a short, bald, mustachioed man who is the long time mascot of the game. He was known as Rich Uncle Pennybags, but he is now known by another name. What is it?

Answer: Mr. Monopoly

Rich Uncle Pennybags was not part of the original game in 1935. He was added later in 1937 by Parker Brothers to give the game a little character. It was not until recently that he was called Mr. Monopoly, as it is an easier name to remember.
2. These streets on the Monopoly board are all from one city. Do you know which city that is?

Answer: Atlantic City, NJ

The creator of the game, Charles Darrow, loved to vacation in Atlantic City. So, to make it easy, he modeled the streets on what he knew from his favorite getaway.
3. Some of the four most popular spaces on the board are the railroads. Going clockwise around the board, in what order do the railroads appear?

Answer: Reading, Pennsylvania, B & O, Short Line

Even though the railroads can't have houses built on them, they are a good steady source of money for the owner throughout the game.
4. If you loved taking a ride on the Reading, you might like the B & O. Say, what exactly does B & O stand for?

Answer: Baltimore and Ohio

The real life B & O had major hubs in Baltimore and Ohio.
5. These are interesting street names. However, if you've been to the city that Monopoly is actually based off of, you know that one of these street names is actually spelled incorrectly. Which one is it?

Answer: Marvin Gardens

It is actually spelled Marven Gardens. It is actually a community just outside Atlantic City, and is the only color property not named after a street in Atlantic City proper.
6. I just landed on the Community Chest space. Hmmm, that's an interesting name, why is it called Community Chest?

Answer: Community Chest was an actual charity

Yes, Community Chest was actually a charity that was active in Atlantic City. It was a predecessor to the modern United Way.
7. Ah, Free Parking, a nice spot to land on all the time. According to the official standard rules, what happens when you land on this space?

Answer: Nothing

A lot of people build up a pot in the middle of the board that is given to a person who lands on the Free Parking space. This serves to do nothing but make the game longer. The intent of the space was to be free of worry and free of money.
8. Uh oh, there's that policeman waiting to throw me in jail. How many different ways are there to be thrown in jail in Monopoly?

Answer: 3

The methods are as follows:
1. Roll 3 doubles in a row
2. Land on the "Go to Jail" space
3. Pick a card that tells you to go to jail
9. Whew, I'm almost around the board. I was hoping to get Boardwalk, but my roll came up one short, so I landed on Luxury Tax. Just my luck! So, how much will I be paying for this (US editions after 2008)?

Answer: $100

Well, two things are inevitable, and taxes are one of them! You didn't think you were going to be able to buy all these streets and houses without the government knowing, did you? :)
10. You know, I think I'm good enough to play this game professionally. In fact, I heard that the winner of the Monopoly World Tournament wins a truly unique prize. What is it?

Answer: A Monopoly set filled with real money

Monopoly World Championships are typically played only once every 3 years or so, and each finalist has struggled his or her way to get there, so a prize of this magnitude is truly earned indeed. Other prizes include a shopping spree or an all expenses paid trip to an exotic locale.
