Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Italian bread literally translates from the Italian language as the word "slipper"?

Answer: Ciabatta

Ciabatta is an Italian white bread made with flour and yeast. It was created in 1982 and was called ciabatta, the literal translation of the Italian word for slipper, after its wide and elongated shape. Traditional ciabatta has a very crisp crust and a soft and porous centre.

It is delicious cut into slices and used to dip in olive oil and balsamic vinegar. It is used to make toasted or grilled sandwiches which are called "panini".
2. What is the name of the dense bread roll cooked in the shape of a ring which originated in the Jewish communities of Poland?

Answer: Bagel

Bagels are Jewish in origin and unlike most breads are traditionally boiled for a short time in water to set the crust before being baked in the oven. This produces a thin crust and an evenly aerated crumb. A lot of modern bagel producers use steam injected ovens rather than boiling the dough.

A traditional topping used on bagels is lox (smoked salmon) and cream cheese although a large variety of other topping may be used.
3. What is the name of the Australian soda bread that was traditionally a staple of the early settlers' diet?

Answer: Damper

Damper is a traditional Australian bread which was originally made by drovers who moved livestock over long distances across the country. As they would be away for long periods of time with only very basic rations damper provided them with a filling food that was easy to cook.

It was easily made using flour, salt and water mixed together. The name is said to have originated from the cooking method of placing the dough on the "damped" down coals of the camp fire although another traditional method of cooking the dough was to wrap it around a stick and hold it over the flames.
4. What is the name of the Italian sweet bread, originating in Milan, that is traditionally enjoyed at Christmas?

Answer: Panettone

Panettone is a traditional Italian Christmas sweet bread traditionally flavoured with raisins and candied candied fruit. A more modern version can be bought flavoured with chocolate chips. The baking of panettone dates from the middle ages and its name is believed to have come from a corruption of "pane di Tonio" (Tony's bread) from a story of a Milanese baker who invented the bread recipe.
5. What is the name of the flat, unleavened bread originating in the Middle East that has a hollow inside pocket that can contain a variety of different fillings?

Answer: Pita

Pita bread (sometimes spelt pitta) has its origins in the Middle East. It is also known as Arab bread or Greek bread. The pita dough is cooked at a high temperature which causes the flattened rounds of dough placed in the oven to puff up to create a pocket on the inside.

The bread can then be split and filled with a variety of different foods such as donner or shish kebabs. The bread can also be used with dips such as hummus.
6. What is the name of the Jewish unleavened flatbread that forms an integral part of the Jewish festival of Passover?

Answer: Matzo

Matzo bread (also spelt matza or matzah) is a traditional Jewish unleavened bread (i.e. it does not contain any raising agents) which is particularly associated with Jewish festival of Passover which commemorates the exodus of the Jewish people from Egyptian bondage.

The bread symbolises the fact that the Jews left Egypt in a hurry and could not wait for the bread to rise. Matzos are not just for Passover and are available to enjoy all year round.
7. What is the name of the bread shaped into a twisted knot that is said to have been invented by monks to represent a child crossing its arms in prayer?

Answer: Pretzel

The exact origins are unclear but it is believed to have begun when Italian monks gave their students prizes of baked dough shaped as their arms at prayer. The pretzels three holes came to symbolise the Holy Trinity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Nowadays pretzels are available in both sweet and savoury forms.
8. What is the name of the French crescent shaped bread roll that is often eaten as part of a continental breakfast?

Answer: Croissant

Croissants are a French bread roll with a flaky, layered texture that is very similar to puff pastry. The yeast risen dough is layered with butter then cut into triangles and rolled up and curved into a crescent shape so when it is cooked the centre bulges and the ends taper out.

They traditionally form part of a "Continental Breakfast" which is generally coffee, bread rolls with butter and jam.
9. What is the name of the traditional Irish bread leavened with sodium bicarbonate and cream of tartar combined with flour, soured milk and salt?

Answer: Soda Bread

Soda bread which uses baking soda as a raising agent was traditionally made in Ireland because the wheat that was able to grow there was "soft" wheat which meant that it did not form gluten and was not suitable for yeast based bread. It is relatively easy to make and unlike yeast baked bread it is possible to put a loaf on the table from scratch within 45 minutes!
10. What is the name of the traditional Welsh tea bread which is enriched with dried fruit and flavoured with tea?

Answer: Bara Brith

Bara Brith is a traditional Welsh bread flavoured with tea, dried fruits and mixed spices. Its name comes from the Welsh word "bara" meaning bread and "brith" meaning speckled. It is delicious slice and liberally covered in butter.
