Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the most popular tap beer in Australia?

Answer: Victoria Bitter

It is quite ironic that VB enjoys the strongest national sales on tap (as well as in bottles and in cans) when, as a rule, people in Victoria prefer Carlton Draught on tap and have shown mule-like stubbornness in resisting draught VB.
2. Where is the oldest still-brewing brewery in Australia?

Answer: Hobart, capital of the island state of Tasmania

This beautiful brewery was established in 1825 and is well worth a visit. Cascade is now owned by Carlton and United, which enjoys over half of Australian beer sales. Tasmania's second largest city, Launceston, is home to Boag's (now owned by San Miguel), and the state is now seeing a rise in the number of small breweries.
3. Holgate, Grand Ridge and Mountain Goat are all independent microbreweries in which state?

Answer: Victoria

Victoria's and Australia's largest brewer, Carlton and United, got that way by merging a great many small breweries into itself (which is not to say Carlton aren't capable of making great beer when the business plan allows it!). All of these breweries can be visited out of Melbourne and are all offer unrefrigerated real ales at the Brandon Hotel in North Carlton, Victoria.
4. What does the 'G' stand for in Carton G?

Answer: Guarana

For those who like balancing their depressants with their stimulants. A cold-filtered beer (of the kind called 'Ice' in the Canada and the United States following Labatt's lead), it's a taste Carlton are hoping nightclub patrons acquire.
5. What was the first beer produced by the wife of South Australian brewer, Thomas Cooper in the 1860s?

Answer: Stout

Thomas fell ill and got his wife to make the stout he remembered from his English youth in their bathtub. A real panacea, Thomas began marketing the drop and later branched out his line to include Pale Ale and Sparkling Ale amongst others.
6. What category best describes the West Australian 'Brass Monkey'?

Answer: Stout

Arising in the 1980s from the then independent microbrewery Redback (now owned by Carlton), Brass Monkey is very tasty.
7. Little Creatures has distinct overtones of which of the following?

Answer: Passionfruit

Coming from Western Australia and now owned by New Zealand conglomerate Lion Nathan, this is a great product. If you want apricot overtones, try Holgate's Real Ale.
8. 'Gorton's Back' is a euphemism for drunkenness commemorating what?

Answer: An Australian Prime Minister's habitual excuse for the inability to attend Parliament

John Gorton's term in office was hampered with back complaints.
9. In different Australian states, the standard drinking vessel for tap beer varies in capacity. What do most Australians know a ten ounce (285 mL) glass as?

Answer: A pot

A pot of beer with 4.9 percent alcohol content is a standard drink throughout Australia.
10. Which of the following is true of the Darwin Stubby?

Answer: It is brewed in Melbourne

Made in Melbourne several thousand kilometres from Darwin, the Darwin Stubby holds two litres (a stubby is the name for the neckless 375 ml Victoria Bitter and is generally applied to beer of similar size whether or not the bottles are neckless and 'stubby').
