Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the largest brewery in Australia to produce primarily vegan beer?

Answer: Coopers, in Adelaide

Most beer is not suitable for vegans, as it is filtered using animal-based finings such as isinglass (powdered sturgeon cartliage) or even fish scales. Interestingly, United States paper currency is not suitable for vegans either, as it is still made with a dye derived from South American insects.
2. The bloke who narrates the Vic ads ... what was the most successful movie he ever appeared in?

Answer: 'Crocodile Dundee'

John Meillon was an Australian actor who starred in many Australian classics over his time, including his role as Crocodile Dundee's sidekick, Wally. He was also in 'The Cars That Ate Paris'. Having spent some time in London as a young man (presumably wearing an Australian rugby jumper at all times), he preferred Foster's.

He is now deceased, but his voice is periodically recreated to add new couplets between the hornblasts of this enduring ad.
3. Victoria Bitter is nearly always abbreviated as 'VB,' which is emblazened on the label. What other, less and less popular nickname does it have?

Answer: Vic

'Vic' is not heard so much these days, except on the classic John Meillon ad.
4. What is Melbourne Bitter also called in northern Tasmania?

Answer: Mee-Bee

A lot of people swear that Melbourne Bitter is more bitter than Victoria Bitter, but it hard to say. In Melbourne, Melbourne Bitter is only called Mee-Bee by northern Tasmanians too drunk to be ashamed of themselves.
5. Why is Victoria Bitter barred from sale in the United Kingdom under its Australian name?

Answer: It isn't bitter enough

Like most of the predominant Australian styles (including lager and the much too pale ale), Victoria Bitter does not fit the traditional British definitions. It does sell in parts of the UK, as Victoria Beer.
6. What does D.A. stand for in Sydney's Resch's D.A.?

Answer: Dinner Ale

'Dinner Ale' is a category of beer made popular in the early part of last century when brewers were trying to gentrify beer's image and get it into homes. It's what the revellers drink in Don's Party, Sydney's greatest movie.
7. Which of the following products is hard to find in a pub owned by Lion Nathan in Victoria?

Answer: Abbotsford Invalid Stout

Abbotsford is a Carlton and United product, the archenemies of all Lion Nathan products. Since 2000, Lion Nathan has been trying to muscle into the Victorian market by buying popular young people's pub and selling only their own beer. Most of these pubs aren't popular any more.
8. Oakbank is a 'resurrected' beer, now made in Sydney. In which state, famous for its water, was it originally made?

Answer: South Australia

Well, South Australia is generally famous for the turpitude of its water, but in the case of beer and wine, producers seem to find excellent water. One of life's great mysteries!
9. The Yarra Valley is a renowned wine region just outside of Melbourne. Yarra Valley Gold is a delicious real ale best drunk warm. What, though, is the valley in which this beer made more famous for?

Answer: Power supplies

Yarra Valley Gold is actually made at the Grand Ridge Brewery at Mirboo North in the Latrobe Valley.
10. What kind of beer are Toohey's Old and its new competitor, Carlton Black?

Answer: Dark Ale

Toohey's Old is the brewery's one unequivocally decent product, but I have to say that Carlton Black is better.
