Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Andrew goes to Asia and eats Durian fruit. This fruit is known for its large size, its dangerous looking thorns and something else. What is it?

Answer: Its strange smell

The smell of this fruit is supposedly so bad, it is banned from many hotels and public transportation. Andrew described the taste as that of rotted onions, but many people love it.
2. One of my favorite episodes is the trip to Morocco. For breakfast one morning, Andrew has a dish called 'Khlia', (meat preserved in its own fat) What kind of meat is it?

Answer: It remained a mystery

Not even the people where he purchased it knew what type of animal it came from. Poor Andrew was barely able to choke down two bites of the foul smelling mixture, (but he did try it twice).
3. In Morocco, Andrew visits 'Lamb Alley', where any and all parts of the animal are available for consumption. What item did he describe as tasting like, "The very essence of the barnyard"?

Answer: The roasted eyeball

He does sample all of these items, (the ear is considered a delicacy despite its texture and the brains are described as creamy and tender) but the roasted eyeball was particularly impressive.
4. While visiting Taiwan, Andrew purchases 'Stinky Tofu' from a street vendor (deep fried tofu, stuffed with fermented cabbage and served on a stick) and he loves it. He later visits "Dai's House of Unique Stink" and samples two more stinky tofu dishes, 'Cow stomach burger on fried stinky tofu bun' and 'Raw tofu salad with thousand year old eggs'. He cannot get enough and cleans his plate.

Answer: False

As a matter of fact he found both dishes absolutely repulsive. He spit out the burger and was only able to squeeze down a swallow of the salad. He told the owner it was the only food that had ever beaten him.
5. At 'Tai Ya Po Po' (an aboriginal restaurant in Taiwan), Andrew eats a dish of fried bees, a salad made from the shoots of the betel nut tree, and something called 'Dama mein' or 'Dama Noodles', but exactly what is it?

Answer: Raw pork mixed with rice and salt, placed in a jar and fermented for 14 days

It is served on a bed of ice. According to Andrew, it taste just like paper-thin beef squirted with lemon. He also describes it as cooling and refreshing. The cabbage dish is called 'Kimchi' and the salted spicy fish roe is called 'Mintai'.
6. During the trip to Iceland, Andrew samples some 'Hakarl' which is shark meat. What makes it a bizarre food?

Answer: All of these are true

It is buried first, then dug up and left to ferment for months. If not processed properly it cannot be consumed. (but why oh why would you want to? And, who do you suppose came up with this idea?)
7. A common, everyday dish in the Philippines is 'Balut', (An eighteen day old duck embryo, steamed in its own shell). Andrew enjoys this one so much, he takes one to go.
