Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the opening 1. e4 f5?

Answer: Fred Defense

The Fred Defense is not a good choice of move. The pawns on f2 and f7 are vulnerable because only the kings are guarding them. Moving the f-pawn creates a diagonal to the king, which makes it harder to protect.
2. What is 1. d4 d5 2. e4?

Answer: Blackmar Diemer Gambit

The True Queen's Gambit is a nickname for the Blackmar Diemer Gambit. This opening is full of traps.
3. After 1. e4 c5 2. d4, what move would transpose to the French Defence?

Answer: e6

A transposed opening is when you do the moves in a different order, but the result of the sequence of moves is the same.
1. e4 c5 2. d4 e6 is the transposed version of the French Defence's Franco-Benoni variant. The original sequence of moves is 1. e4 e6 2. d4 c5.
The moves are switched around, but the result is the same.
4. What opening is 1. g3 e6?

Answer: It has no name

A fianchettoed bishop usually leads to a central battle. While 1. g3 is called Benko's opening, black's e6 reply is considered highly inferior (if black wants to move the e pawn, they should just play e5) and thus has no name of its own.

In chess practice, 1. g3 is almost always transposed into other opening lines.
5. What is the opening 1. e4 Nf6 2. e5 Ne4?

Answer: Alekhine Defense / Mokele Mbembe Variation

This is a mistake for black. The move 3. d4 makes it so the knight cannot move to a safe place, and is therefore trapped. White usually wins the black knight for two pawns.
6. Which of these is the Center Counter Game?

Answer: 1. e4 d5

The Center Counter Game is also known as the Scandinavian Defence.
7. After 1. g3 Nf6 2. Bg2 d5, what White move would transpose into the Barcza System?

Answer: Nf3

The normal way to get to the Barcza System is by 1. Nf3 Nf6 2. g3 d5 3. Bg2.
8. What opening is 1. f4 d5 2. e3 Nf6 3. Nf3 c5?

Answer: Bird Opening / Lasker Variation

Black dominates the white colored squares while White has control over the dark squares.
9. What opening is 1. c3 c5?

Answer: Saragossa Opening / Slav Variation

The Anglo-Slav Defence and Anglo-Scandinavian Defence come from the English opening (1. c4). I made up the Degen Defence.
10. What is the first move in the Dunst Opening?

Answer: Nc3

The Dunst Opening is also called the Baltic or the Queen's Knight Attack.
