Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Among the following "weed-eaters", only one has a double-edged blade. Which is it?

Answer: yo-yo

No, Mister Duncan didn't invent this one. A yo-yo is a long handled device with a horizontal double edged blade. It is swung back and forth, cutting in both directions. Other names are "sling blade" and "weed cutter". Still available today in both original and modernized versions, it was used before mechanical cutters were available for cutting high grasses close to the ground for hay. A scythe was historically used for this purpose, but only cuts in one direction.
A machete is used primarily for clearing dense underbrush, not weeds.
The goat is self-explanatory.
2. A "billdukie" can be useful in tight places or for special jobs. It is longer and narrower than its cousins. Which is it?

Answer: sharpshooter

Billdukie is a commonly used name for a sharpshooter. It is a shovel with a long, narrow blade, often used in gardening for cutting deep, precise holes or edges.
3. I'm building a barbed wire fence. I have wire, staples, posts and a stretcher. What other tool(s) do I need?

Answer: fencing pliers

An "all-in-one" tool, fencing pliers combine hammer, pliers, wire cutter and staple puller.
4. What specialty tool is created by combining two shovels so that they face each other and pivot on a common axis?

Answer: a post hole digger

A post hole digger saves time both by creating a neat round hole with vertical sides and allowing dirt to be removed easily from the hole by bringing the shovel tips together like cupping one's hands.
5. I'm preparing a wall for the installation of an electrical outlet. Which saw should I use?

Answer: sheetrock saw

A sheetrock saw is designed with a sharp point for penetrating installed sheetrock and creating holes, typically rectangular or round, of the correct size.
6. What screw type, often used in the automotive industry, is also used in modified form for security applications?

Answer: torx

The torx screw is modified by adding a post in the center, requiring a special screwdriver.
7. Hammers come in all types and weights, from 2 ounce jewelers to 20 pound sledge. What weight claw hammer is most commonly used for roofing?

Answer: 20 ounce

Although all can be used, the 20 ounce is preferred by most roofers.
8. I need to do some plumbing work and can't find my pipe wrench. Which alternative do I select?

Answer: locking pliers

Locking pliers, often called Vise-Grips (the name of the major manufacturer) allow a non-slip grip on pipes.
9. Most residences in the United States are built using 2x4 or 2x6 wood framing. What is the most common nail used for wood framing in the United States?

Answer: 16d

Wood framing historically has been 2" x 4" so, at 3.5" long, the 16d nail yields the best grip while not going through both pieces of lumber.
The "d" is penny size, a carryover from England. It was the cost in British pence of 100 nails of a given size.
10. 9 for 10: Who would have use for all the items mentioned in the previous 9 questions?

Answer: rancher

Anyone might find use for one or more of these "handy" tools and fasteners, but you need them all around a ranch.
