Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What state's name is part of a name of a poker game?

Answer: Texas

In Texas Hold 'em (which has a variety of spellings and capitalizations), two cards are dealt face down to each player, then five more are dealt face up to be used by all players in forming their hands.
2. This is one of the first card games many children learn. It can take a LONG time to complete, because the winning player must end up with the entire deck of cards! Can you name it?

Answer: War

War is a game that can occupy kids for long periods. It's mostly a matter of luck. All cards are dealt to players. Each player displays a card, and the one that is highest in rank takes all the cards displayed. "War" occurs when at least two players display cards that are of the same rank. Each person involved in the war then lays down three more cards, face-down, followed by a fourth, face up. Whichever of the final face up cards is higher, wins the war and the winner takes possession of all the cards involved in the war. If those two cards are of the same rank, a "double war" ensues, proceeding the same as a regular war. Eventually one player ends up with the entire deck, but it isn't unusual for the game to take in excess of an hour.
3. Another game for children, this game involves matching cards from others' hands to cards in your hand. The player with the most matched sets at the end of the game is the winner. What's the name of the game?

Answer: Go Fish

"Go Fish" has a number of variations, but basically players form "books" (sets of cards of equal rank-either two or four like cards makes a book) by asking other players for cards that match in rank a card the asking player holds. If a player holds the card requested, s/he must give all cards of that rank to the requesting player. If not, s/he tells the other player to "Go fish!" In some versions of the game, the player draws only one card.

In others, s/he must draw cards one at a time until getting the card sought.

In the end, the player with the most books wins the game.
4. This popular card game has several versions, and its moniker refers to two types of potable alcohol. Can you name it?

Answer: Gin Rummy

Gin Rummy is a game invented in the US in the early years of the 20th century. There are many variations played in casual gatherings, but the game has an official association and official rules for tournament play. It is a descendant of a 19th-century game known as Whiskey Poker.
5. A familiar solitaire game is named for a feature of this photo. Can you pick it out of the choices?

Answer: Baker's Dozen

Baker's Dozen gets its name from the layout of the tableau, which consists of thirteen columns of four cards each at the start of the game. The object of the game is to remove all cards from the tableau onto four foundations built up in sequence from ace to king.
6. Charles Goren wrote a number of books about this game that is played both for fun and in tournaments. Its adherents are known for their ardent love of the game. What's the game?

Answer: Bridge

Bridge is a descendant of a simpler but similar card game, Whist, and more specifically, from a Russian form of Whist known as Biritch. While Whist in many variations has been played since the 1600s, Bridge appeared at the turn of the 20th century. Two primary differences between Whist and Bridge were that in Whist, the last card dealt was turned up from the deck to determine the trump suit, while in Bridge, the players determined the trump suit in the bidding process; and, in Whist, there was no bidding.

There is now a variation of Whist called Bid Whist, which, as the name suggests, does use bidding.
7. In some card games, three cards held in sequence (for instance, 8-9-10) are known as what?

Answer: Run

Runs are generally a minimum of three cards in length but can be longer. Depending on the game, the cards in the run may or may not have to be in the same suit.
8. In what well-known gambling game does one try to beat the dealer by scoring as close as possible to twenty-one without going over?

Answer: Blackjack

Also known as Twenty-one. Blackjack is one of the best-known casino games. Because during the course of play all cards are exposed to all players, it is theoretically possible for a player to know which cards remain unplayed and to adjust his bets accordingly, betting higher if more "good" cards are yet to be dealt or lower if the remaining cards are not valuable.

This is known as counting cards, and while not considered cheating, casinos can remove a player from the game or the casino if they recognize that card counting is taking place.
9. In the game of cribbage, players throw a couple cards into a hand that is to be used by the dealer. Formally known as the "crib"; what is a frequently used informal term for this hand?

Answer: Kitty

Players contribute one or two cards from their hands (depending on the number of people playing) to form the "kitty", which is then counted as a second hand for the dealer.
10. Can you name the card game where some of the ways points are scored are for having the Ten of Diamonds or the Two of Spades?

Answer: Casino

In Casino, one scores points in a variety of ways-ending up with the most cards, the most spades, the Ten of Diamonds ("known as Big Casino"), the two of spades (known as "Little Casino") and for ending up with aces. Players score points by making various combinations of cards from their hands and cards that are dealt face up on the table. Whoever gets the most points wins the round, and the game is generally played until someone reaches 21 points.
