Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the most popular card games is not played against multiple players, but rather, against a dealer. Which of these games revolves around the number displayed in the picture?

Answer: Blackjack

Blackjack or Twenty-One is about defeating the dealer. The dealer gives each player participating two random cards, face down. The value of the cards is the number displayed on them; kings, queens and jacks are worth 10 points and aces can either be 1 or 11, depending on what is most convenient to the player.

The goal of the game is to either accumulate 21 points with those two cards, or get as close as possible. Players can ask for more cards to get a value equal or as close as possible to the number 21, but if the cards exceed 21, they lose the game.

This game is often used in statistics classes as a great example of how probability works, and is very popular in casinos.
2. You might recognize this game genre if you have ever owned a PC equipped with Microsoft. Which card game genre expresses the situation of the man in the picture and is also commonly called Patience or Klondike?

Answer: Solitaire

One of the most popular solitaire/patience games is Klondike. Cards are shuffled and piles are placed from left to right. The first pile only has one card, facing up, while the next piles have one card facing up and cards facing down in increments (the second pile has one face down card, the third has two face down cards, and so on.) The objective of the game is to place all the cards of the four suits in ascending piles, beginning with an ace and going all the way to the king. Cards can only be placed in piles if the cards' colors match.

The word "solitaire" is synonymous with "lonely," which makes sense considering that this card game can be played alone.
3. A very popular trick-taking card game is won by the player with the least points. What is this game, named after a human organ?

Answer: Hearts

To play Hearts, 13 cards are dealt from the deck to each player (which means all cards in the deck are used except for Jokers.) After looking at their hands, players pass three cards to another player, usually to the one on their left. The next step is to play a card, following the suit of the first one played, and whoever plays the highest suit takes the trick. If one takes a heart in a trick, they get a point.

The player with the least points after another player accumulates 100 points is declared the winner.
4. In the game Crazy Eights, all eights in the deck can be played at any point of the game. Is this true or false?

Answer: True

The name of this game originated from the United States military category of discharge of soldiers unable to perform their duties due to mental issues, known as Section 8. The objective of the game is to get rid of all of your cards; whoever achieves that first wins. Cards can be discarded if they match the rank or suit on top of the discard pile, or if they are an eight. If none of these conditions are met, players must draw cards from a pile until they have one that matches the one on the discard pile.

In a way, the game is similar to the Mattel card game "UNO."
5. Also known as Pig or Tongue, this fast-paced card game is normally played with a deck of cards and the kitchen tools shown in the picture. What is the name of this game?

Answer: Spoons

The objective of Spoons is simple: to be the last player standing. Spoons are arranged in a circle, using one spoon less than there are players (so if there are 5 players, 4 spoons would be used.) Four cards are dealt to each player, after which the dealer takes a card from a pile, switches it out for another one in his deck, and passes the switched out card to the next player. All players are trying to make four-of-a-kind with their cards, and once they manage to do this they take a spoon from the circle. When this happens, other players are free to take the rest of the spoon, and whoever doesn't take the spoon is either eliminated or loses a point.

Some call the game Tongue because it can be played sticking your tongue out rather than playing with spoons. The last person to stick their tongue out loses a point or is eliminated.
6. Perhaps one of the best known card games is poker, a strategy and gambling game that can sometimes be won by bluffing. How is the best hand in poker, depicted in the picture and which has a name that may remind you of monarchs and blue blood, known as?

Answer: Royal Flush

"Poker" dates back to the nineteenth century, though the developments for the game as we know it today began in the beginning of the twentieth century. Tournament play in variations like "Texas Hold'em" became very popular, and the game gained even more popularity with its introductions to casinos and the later introduction of online poker. Players are dealt five cards, and then bet depending on how strong their hand is (or if they want to bluff and pretend they have a good hand.) Whoever bids the most wins, unless the bet is matched, in which case the player with the best hand wins.

Hands include the "Royal Flush" (which is made of an Ace, King, Queen, Jack and 10 of the same suit,) a "Straight Flush" (which is made of any five straight cards of the same suit,) a "Four of a Kind" (where a player has four cards of the same rank) and a "Full House" (which is three cards of the same rank plus two cards of the same rank.)
7. This card game, which belongs to the rummy family, was invented in Uruguay in the 1940's. Which word, which translates to "basket" from Spanish, is also the name of this game?

Answer: Canasta

Canasta was created by Segundo Santos and Alberto Serrato in Uruguay. Wild cards, which are one of the reasons this game became so popular when it was first introduced to the United States, are jokers and deuces. Each player gets 11 cards, after which the undealt cards are placed face down and the top one is turned.

This card should be a 4 or higher. Players must form melds (three or more cards that belong to the same rank,) if these melds contain seven or more cards of the same rank it is considered a canasta.

The winner is the first to accumulate 5,000 points (each natural canasta is worth 500.)
8. This card game is also the name of a sport played with the items depicted in the picture, and is finished after nine deals or "holes," a term also related to the aforementioned sport. Which game is this?

Answer: Golf

The card game Golf is known by many other names, including Polish Polka and Poison. The winner is the player who scores fewer points, similar to the sport golf where the winner is the player who hits a ball into a hole in the least number of strokes possible. Players are dealt six cards each, and they can either swap them for lower valued cards or pair them with a card of an equal rank, all this with the intention of having the lowest value possible in their cards. Rounds end when all of a player's cards are face up.
9. This game, as described in the picture, consists of placing four cards of the same rank around four layoff piles and a central draw pile, forming the shape of a cross. Which game, in which players draw cards and then try to get rid of as many of them, is this?

Answer: Kings in the Corner

Kings in the Corner's objective is to get rid of all your cards. Each player is dealt seven cards. Four other cards are turned face up, while the remaining cards are placed face down in a pile, in the middle of the four cards. Four spaces around the cards must be left for the four kings. Depending on the cards they have, players can place the kings in their position, play a card which is one rank lower and of different color than the top card in one of the piles, moving one layoff pile to another (following the same rules as the previous sentence) or playing any card in an empty layoff space.
10. The trick-taking game Oh Hell is about bidding on a specific number of tricks the player thinks can take, as an ascending number of cards is dealt each round. One alternative name for this game claims to go up and down which body of water?

Answer: River

Oh Hell has a wide variety of alternative names, such as Up and Down the River (or simply Up the River,) Count Down, and Burn Your Neighbor. One of the differences of this game with many other ones is that it uses trumps, cards that have their value elevated.

The player with the highest card/trump at the end of each round wins the trick. Though rules vary all over the world, a popular version includes earning more points (usually 10) per correct prediction, while a player who is wrong in their bid only gets one point per trick.
