Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This game is played by oneself. The particular version shown requires clearing the cards from the columns on the table, to what is known as the foundation at the top. Cards placed in the foundation must be placed in ascending order Ace to King. Name this game.

Answer: Klondike Solitaire

In Klondike Solitaire, as pictured, moving cards from column to column requires red cards to be placed on black cards and vice versa. The cards also must be placed in the proper order, for instance 9 would be placed on 10. Other versions of Solitaire include Spider, Tri-Peaks, and Free Cell.
2. Only a certain number of cards can be moved at a time in this solo game. Make sure you have enough cells available to move the cards red on black (or black on red) in descending order.

Answer: Free Cell

This version of solitaire requires placing cards in order Ace to King into the foundation at the top of the table. The catch is, only a certain number of cards can be moved at a time. The number of cards that can be moved at one time depend on how many "free cells" are available. Since the deal is always random, not every game can be won.
3. This is a four player game played individually. The goal is to have the fewest points at the end of the game. Points are collected by winning tricks with particular suits. After swapping three cards with one opponent, play begins with the 2 of Clubs. What am I playing?

Answer: Hearts

Hearts is the suit from which most of the points are collected. Each Heart suit card is worth one point. The other card that has points attached is the Queen of Spades, which is worth 13 points. Hearts cannot be led unless it is the only suit remaining in a player's hand.

They can also be played on a trick led with a separate suit that cannot be followed. If one player collects all point cards, they are "shooting the moon," which gives that player zero points and all three other players receive 26 points.

The game ends when one player reaches 100 points.
4. This game is typically played between two people, though it can be played with more. The deck is dealt equally between the two, and the goal is to be the one to win all 52 cards. What is being played?

Answer: War

Both players flip over the top card in their stack. The player with the higher card wins both cards. If the cards are the same, each player places one of their cards face down, then plays a card face up. The higher card wins all four cards for their stack. Any additional ties are played the same way until someone wins the "war."
5. My partner has called trump by picking up a card. They have also decided to "go alone," meaning I don't have to play this hand. They won all five tricks, with both jacks of the same color of trump being the highest cards. What game is being played?

Answer: Euchre

In euchre, games are played with partners. The face up card dealt at the end of the deal is the possible trump card. If someone wants that card to be trump, it is picked up by the dealer. If not, one of the other three suits is chosen as trump. Once trump is chosen, the highest card is the Jack of the trump suit.

The second highest is the Jack of the same color as the trump suit. For example, if Diamonds is trump, the Jack of Diamonds is the highest card, and the Jack of Hearts is the second highest card.

After that, the cards go in order from Ace to Nine. The two non-trump suits are ordered Ace to Nine as well.
6. Another solo game, cards laid out in the fashion shown are removed from the field one at a time. In order to remove them, the card must be one point higher or lower than the card on the stack. What is being played?

Answer: Tri-Peaks Solitaire

The card face up at the bottom of the field is the card that determines which cards can be removed. The cards underneath another card cannot be played until the card on top of them is removed. If no card can be played, the next card on the deck is revealed. The player wins if the field is cleared and loses if the deck is emptied with no more moves to make.
7. Now for a game against the dealer! This one involves wagering based on seeing only one of the two cards the dealer has. The two cards in front of the player are both visible. What is this game?

Answer: Blackjack

The goal in blackjack is to get as close to 21 points as possible without going over, or "busting." Face cards are worth 10, aces are worth either one or 11, and the rest of the cards are worth their face value. Getting dealt an Ace and a face card is called a "blackjack." The player can see their cards and can request additional cards until they are satisfied with their score.

The catch is, the dealer only has one card visible to the player, so the player has no idea what the dealer's other card is until the player's score has been decided.
8. For this game, a round of bidding occurs before any cards are played. Each player bids on the number of tricks to take. The trump suit never changes and is named for one of the four suits. Which one?

Answer: Spades

Starting with 13 cards each, players take tricks, following suit when possible. Spades is the trump suit for every hand, and players receive points for the number of tricks they take based on the bid. The first player or team to 500 points wins.
9. This game involves creating sets or runs of cards to score points. The goal of each hand is to be the first to discard all of their cards. Which game is this?

Answer: Rummy

Players can play sets of three or more cards (same number), or sequences, or runs, (same suit in order) of three cards or more. Each turn requires picking up a card to start and finishing the turn by discarding a card. Once a player has their sets or runs in place in front of them, they can "lay off" additional cards that match the set or run's requirements.

Upon a player discarding all cards, points are tallied to the winner of the hand. The other players count the "pips" on each card, and the winner gets those points. The pips are the number that represents the card in the hand (2,3,4, etc.). Face cards are worth 10 points, all other cards are worth their face value. If a player goes out by discarding all cards in one turn without having any sets or runs previously, the point values are doubled.
10. The final game is played alone. The goal is to clear the field by pairing up cards so that the two cards equal 13. What game is this?

Answer: Pyramid Solitaire

The field of cards in Pyramid Solitaire are matched up to equal 13. That means face cards have their own value. Ace to Ten have value equal to the number on the card. Jacks are 11, Queens are 12, and Kings are 13, and therefore the only card that need not be matched with another. Like Tri-Peaks, the game is won by clearing the field, and the game is lost if the cards in the deck are emptied with no remaining moves.
