Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Playing cards vary from country to country. In English-speaking countries, the face cards are represented by the letters K, Q and J. Which face card is represented by the letter D in some countries?

Answer: Queen

Some countries, like France, have a "Dame" or "Donna" instead of a Queen.
2. The suits in playing cards (hearts, diamonds, spades, clubs) developed from the symbols used in the "Minor Arcana" of the Tarot card deck. For instance, "pentacles" in the Tarot deck are equivalent to...?

Answer: Diamonds

The other pairs are hearts/cups, clubs/wands and spades/swords.
3. There are many variations of the card game Solitaire. They all share a common element, as the name suggests. In fact, Solitaire is the French word for...?

Answer: Lonely

The most common game, with seven piles of cards, is known as Klondike, but there are literally hundreds of types of Solitaire, all designed to be played by just one person.
4. You would usually play all the following card games with a full regular 52-card deck, except:

Answer: Euchre

A euchre deck has only 24 or 32 cards; it omits cards between 2 and 8 (or 2 and 6).
5. What two cards make up the highest possible hand in cribbage?

Answer: Jack and five

You get 29 points for three fives and the Jack of Spades if the five of spades also turns up as the "free card". That's why some cribbage boards are shaped like the number 29.
6. An ominous lady of the deck, she often has special powers and is sometimes thought to bring ill luck. Perhaps that's why she's often chosen as the "Old Maid" in the card game of the same name.

Answer: Queen of Spades

Tchaikovsky actually named an opera after this formidable royal, and a Styx song warns listeners to beware of her "black widow's curse".
7. Who stole the tarts?

Answer: The Knave of Hearts

According to the old nursery rhyme (and Lewis Carroll's "Alice" tales), "The Queen of Hearts, she baked some tarts" but "The Knave (Jack) of Hearts, he stole the tarts". (He brought them back later, though.)
8. Just what are the odds of drawing to an inside straight in poker?

Answer: 11-1

This means betting that you'll get the missing 7 to complete the series when you're holding 5-6-8-9, for example.
9. While we're on the subject of poker, what cards would you be holding in a "Dead Man's Hand"?

Answer: Aces and eights

Legend has it that Wild Bill Hickok was holding a pair of aces and a pair of eights when he was shot dead, hence the name.
10. If someone who was used to British/North American playing cards saw Italian playing cards, they might be surprised that...?

Answer: The cards have no numbers

Traditionally, Italian playing cards come in a number of regional variations, with decks of 36, 40 or 52 cards. In some decks, the suits resemble the Tarot deck. Some decks have a horseman instead of a queen. Most are printed without the helpful numbers in the corners.
