Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From the options below, which is the only "Solitaire" card game?

Answer: Clock

The cards are dealt out into the shape of a clock face-down, with cards in the middle as well, so you end up with 13 piles of four cards. The aim of the game is to move all the cards into 13 different piles--all four aces into the one o'clock position and then so on around, with Jacks becoming 11 o'clock and Queens 12 o'clock.

The four Kings end up in the middle of the clock face. If all the Kings end up in the middle before all cards play, you lose. If all the cards end up in the right place before the four Kings are in the middle, you win.
2. Which trick-taking game has the same name as a Suffolk town renowned worldwide for Thoroughbred horse racing?

Answer: Newmarket

Newmarket is a game played and enjoyed for small stakes, loosely based on horse racing. Two decks of cards are required and 3-8 people can play at any one time.
3. You are in a casino playing Blackjack. What score total would you immediately know you have lost with out of the options below?

Answer: 22

A score of over 21 is classed as the player having bust. Players play against the bank, initially being dealt two cards. The bank then pays out hands scoring higher than their hand without busting.
4. Which card game has an alternative name of Call Bridge?

Answer: Spades

Devised in the US in the 1930s, Spades is a trick-taking card game. It is usually played with four people who play in pairs. Normally a game is played to the score of 500.
5. Totalling up scores at the end of a hand, my opponent scores "one for his nob". What game are we playing?

Answer: Cribbage

Cribbage is a card game that has its origins in England. It is for two players with variations for 3-6 players. Having a Jack of the same suit as the starter card in your hand will score "one for his nob". If the starter card is a Jack, then it scores two points for the dealer and is called "his heels".

A game of Cribbage is played to 121 points. Score is almost always kept by use of a Cribbage board, which has four rows of 60 holes (two rows for each player). As the game progresses, each player keeps track of his/her score by moving two "pegs" along the rows of holes in a leapfrog fashion.
6. In the film "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels", Harry "The Hatchet" Lonsdale cheats to win this originally British gambling card game. What card game were they playing?

Answer: Three card brag

Invented in Britain in the 16th century, Three card brag is a gambling/bluffing card game. Players can even bet blind on their hand. Those who play blind only have to put half the amount in the pot that an open player (one who has seen their cards) does.

There are other variations of the game where four, seven, nine and thirteen cards are used. Three card brag, though, is the usual game gamblers play.
7. "Stud", "Community" and "Draw" are variants of which card game?

Answer: Poker

Draw Poker is a hidden hand game in which only the player sees his cards. Stud Poker has a mixture of individual face up and face down cards. Community Poker has a mixture of individual hidden cards and community face up cards. Within all types of Poker there are many local variations of each type of game.
8. What British card game could have been named after a 19th century Emperor of the French?

Answer: Napoleon

Napoleon, or Nap as it is sometimes known, is a trick-taking game which three to seven players can play, although a group of five is thought to be best. The game has given the British the slang phrase of "to go nap", which means to take five of anything. Although the game is not recorded anywhere till the late 19th century, it is believed to have been named after Napoleon.
9. Which card game uses the terms "small slam" and "grand slam"?

Answer: Bridge

When playing bridge, teams bid to see which partnership gets to name the trump suit for the hand. This is accomplished by stating how many tricks the team promises to make if they are allowed to choose trump. There are 13 possible tricks to win. If the team taking the bid earns all 13 tricks, they have achieved a "grand slam". If they take 12, they earn points for a "small slam". it is important to note that, in order to receive the bonus slam points, the team must have stated in their bid that they could take that many tricks.

A team failing to make their bid has been "set", which earns bonus points for their opponents.
10. Old Maid can be played and bets placed on the game in most modern day casinos.

Answer: False

Old Maid was a Victorian card game for two to eight players. There are purpose-made decks of cards to play Old Maid, but it can also be played with a standard deck, with a Queen or the Joker taking the place of the Old Maid card from an original deck. There are several variants of the game around the world, but the basics are always the same.
