Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these is NOT a reason why people grow and eat hybrid fruits and vegetables?

Answer: hybrids are always grown organically

In the history of hybridization there have been successes and failures, but it's the successes that end up on our dinner tables. A successful hybrid inherits good qualities from both parent species, and is often more tolerant of weather and resistant to disease, making it easier and cheaper to cultivate.

Hybrids need not be grown organically- the only way to know if your hybrid produce is organic is to check the sticker!
2. Which of the following statements about fruit and vegetable hybrids is TRUE?

Answer: hybridisation can happen spontaneously in the wild

Cross-pollination can happen when two compatible species grow in the same area, where insects and birds can carry pollen from one plant to another.
3. Broccoflower is a nutritious vegetable that is a cross of what two species?

Answer: broccoli and cauliflower

Broccoli and cauliflower are closely related members of the cabbage family, and will readily cross-pollinate.

You certainly wouldn't want E. coli anywhere near your cauliflower- you might get food poisoning from the bacterium.

By the way, kimchi is a Korean dish of fermented vegetables, often cabbage.
4. If I'm savagely consuming a juicy 'plumcot', which set of parents have been bereaved?

Answer: Mr. Plum and Mrs. Apricot

There are many varieties of plumcot and they can range from ruby red to golden yellow, from dense to delicate, and from sweet to sour.
5. Which of the following products sounds like it should be a hybrid, but is really just an ordinary fruit made to taste like another kind of fruit?

Answer: grapple

According to the Grapple website, "there is nothing but flavor being infused into the apple... They are not genetically altered in any way. The apple is as healthy as ever but now has the new exciting grape flavor."

6. If you crashed a party for 'Hybrids Only', what might you see?

Answer: a tangelo dancing the tango

A tangelo is the hybrid of a pomelo and a tangerine. They are also known as 'honeybells.'
7. Speaking of pomelo... when you combine a pomelo with an orange, what do you get?

Answer: grapefruit

It's delicious for breakfast, but be warned: grapefruit can interact with some medications, making them more potent!
8. Boysenberry and Loganberry have fled the scene of a murder. Fortunately, they left a lot of juicy stains behind. The fruitensic pathologist found that the criminals were related: what parents did they have in common?

Answer: raspberry and blackberry

Both boysenberries and loganberries come from a cross between raspberries and blackberries.
9. Which two crops, if planted together, might spontaneously produce a hybrid?

Answer: cherry tomatoes and grape tomatoes

The more closely related the plants, the more likely they are to be cross-fertile.
10. And finally, a case of a runaway hybrid that's neither delicious nor healthy. According to the City of Columbia, Missouri, why are the "Callery pear tree hybrids" a threat?

Answer: they crowd out other pear species

According to the city's website, the spread of this hybrid of ornamental pear is responsible for "Ecological damage caused by displacing native plant communities".
