Made of corn, and not yet colored brown, it was distilled in Kentucky County, part of Virginia at the time. The exact area later became known as Bourbon County.

A French fellow named Boulanger had an all-night tavern in Paris and decided to serve a dish made of sheep's meat and white sauce. The caterers had a monopoly, though, on the sale of cooked meat. Boulanger called his "soup" a "restorative" (restorante). The caterers sued, though, and lost when the case went to the Franch Parlement.
