Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first game most of us learn is peek-a-boo. What action is shown to a baby that hopefully makes them giggle?

Answer: You hide your face with your hands then quickly open them

Most babies smile and giggle when a face they are familiar with suddenly appears and says, "Peek-a-boo!"
2. Itsy bitsy spider is a game toddlers love! Where does the spider climb?

Answer: up the water spout

"Eensy weensy spider" is used in some locations in place of, or even along with "itsy bitsy spider". This is a game good for building better hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity.
3. I'm a little teapot has young children use their arms as handles and spouts. When the tea gets "all steamed up" the children lean over and "pour" it out, but how big is the tea pot?

Answer: short and stout

The history of "I'm a little tea pot" is interesting. When the tap dance school run by Clarence Kelley and his wife needed an easy-to-learn routine for their younger students, George Harold Sanders came up with this song the children could relate to. It was published in 1939.
4. In the game monkey in the middle, what is needed besides a ball and two players to toss the ball back and forth?

Answer: a third player to be the monkey

Monkey in the middle is a throwing and catching game known worldwide and goes by many names. Some of them are keep away, piggy in the middle, pickle in a dish, even pickle in the middle. This game can be a lot of fun - or it can get nasty when the throwers go all out trying to keep the ball away from the monkey and avoid becoming the next monkey.
5. A great school recess game is red rover. Two teams are formed in lines facing one another. Children hold hands tightly while the captain of one team calls, "Red rover, red rover, let (insert name of a child from the opposite team) come over." What is that child supposed to do?

Answer: run up and try to break through the other team's line of hands

Red rover is a game that exercises the runners and is good for team-building. The original game played in Britain back in 1930, seems to have been called octopus tag or British bulldogs. In China, the game was uniquely and appropriately called, forcing the city gates. I wasn't really very good at sports but I loved this game. Being very small, it might have seemed the other team could stop me, but I was determined!
6. During the outdoor game of red light, green light, the player who was "it" (the traffic light) would turn their back to the others lined up and call out either, "red light" or "green light". What would the other kids do?

Answer: Try to be the first one to run up and touch the "It" player

Red light, green light was a regular in our yard. It's also a great learning game for kids, teaching good listening skills and quick reflex movement.
7. This game can be played indoors or out; two players and string are all that's needed. One person starts the game by wrapping the string around their fingers and holding it taut so the other player can reach into the design, and either pinch two X's in the strings, or pick up two parallel strings with their pinkie fingers and create a new design on their own hands. What is this not-so-furry game called?

Answer: Cat's Cradle

Cat's Cradle is one of the earliest known games in our human history. Many indigenous cultures around the world have varying versions, yet they all start with tying a knot in a long piece of string and wrapping it around their fingers. I played this one a lot and probably still would, given the chance.
8. A fun outdoor game I rarely hear about today is called "colored eggs". One person is the wolf who wants to catch a certain color of egg. Players (the eggs) line up and decide their colors. When the wolf catches his choice of colored egg, what happens?

Answer: The caught person becomes the Wolf

Colored eggs has been played with these variations: one player is chosen to be the mother hen who knows everyone's chosen color, and another type has a designated home base where any egg who can reach it, is safe from the wolf.
9. Children and adults spent hours playing card games when I was younger. Which of these kids' games left the player who had one card left, a silly-looking, lonely crone, as the loser?

Answer: Old Maid

Of course it's not nice to picture a single lady as ugly and old, therefore unworthy, so today's versions use more politically correct imagery. However, I still have the set I played with my sisters.
10. Pick the name of the game that needs three players and a long looped piece of wide elastic that gets stretched around the player's ankles. Hint: The history of this game goes back to the 7th century.

Answer: Chinese Jump Rope

With the taut elastic strung between the two players, the third player stands between the elastic rope and tries to perform a series of moves with one or two feet without missing a step. Chinese jump rope was one of my favorite lunchtime playground games. Second would have been red rover.
