Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This candy is a crunchy peanut butter mixture, covered in milk chocolate. It is named after a famous street. What is it called?

Answer: 5th Avenue

The "5th Avenue" bar began production in 1936, originally by William H. Luden, whose company also made "Luden's Cough Drops". The Luden's company was sold to Hershey Corp. in 1986, and the candy bar continued to be produced by Hershey under the same name.
2. This popular treat contains a coconut base and is coated in dark chocolate. Which Hershey's candy is this? (Be careful)

Answer: Mounds

"Mounds" is the correct answer. It was first made back in 1920. The Peter Paul Company began producing the candy in 1929. Hershey acquired Peter Paul Company in 1988, and continued the "Mounds" candy bar production. "Almond Joy" was a sister candybar to "Mounds", but also contained almonds, and was made with milk chocolate. "Bounty" is a similar product to "Mounds", but is neither made by Hershey Corp., or distributed in the U.S. "Cocoa Nut" does not exist.
3. English-style toffee with a milk chocolate coating, is the way this sweet treat can be described. What bar is this?

Answer: Heath Bar

The "Heath" bar was a creation of Bayard and Everett Heath, two brothers from Illinois, who had a confectionery shop there. They began producing "Heath" bars locally in 1928. In 1931 they joined with their father who had a dairy business, and began distribution of the candies along with the orders for milk to be delivered to customer's homes. So with your delivery of milk, butter and eggs, you could also get candy bars.

The candy became so popular that it was included in rations packages for soldiers during World War II.

The candy bar continued to flourish, and this candy bar came to the Hershey empire in 1996 when Hershey Corp. acquired it via Leaf Inc., the company that owned the rights at the time.
4. This delight, originally from England, consists of thin wafers covered in milk chocolate. What candy is this? (Obscure Hint: Desperately Seeking Susan)

Answer: Kit Kat

"Kit Kat" is one of the best selling candy bars in the world. It is manufactured in at least 15 different countries. It is also a candy bar that Hershey does not own. The bar was originally produced by The Rowntree Ltd., of York, England. It is actually produced by Hershey's main rival, The Nestle Corp. (who acquired Rowntree in 1988), everywhere EXCEPT the U.S., where it is licensed to Hershey to produce.

The "Desperately Seeking Susan" reference you ask? For those who remember the movie, when Roberta (Rosanna Arquette) goes to work as the magician's assistant, she works at "The Kit-Kat Club".
5. This bar can basically be described as chocolate covered Rice Krispies. Mmmm...what's this candy called?

Answer: Krackel

"Krackel" has been around since 1938 and is an original Hershey's creation. The bar also had, at one time, almonds and peanuts in the mix, but those bars were discontinued in the early 1940s. "Krackel" bars are no longer made in large size bars. Hershey makes the candy only in a miniature version.
6. These little round balls of chocolate covered caramel are favorites of movie-goers everywhere in the US. What candy is this?

Answer: Milk Duds

"Milk Duds" can be spotted at most every movie theater refreshment stand. First manufactured by F. Hoffman & Company of Chicago, Illinois, the candy passed through a number of companies and ended up with Leaf Inc., which The Hershey Corp. acquired in 1996.
7. This is one of the most popular candy bars in the Hershey realm. It contains peanuts, LOTS of peanuts, covered in chocolate. Name it.

Answer: Mr. Goodbar

"Mr. Goodbar" is another Hershey's original, which began production in 1925. The company allegedly did not want the Hershey name to be associated with a candybar that contained peanuts, so the bar was initially marked as being produced by the Chocolate Sales Corporation. Eventually, they came around and the bar appeared with the Hershey label.

In 1992, a new formula was introduced adding even MORE peanuts to the mix. The candy is another of the Hershey group that is commonly seen in the miniature version, as well as a full sized bar.
8. This conglomeration of goodies consists of pretzels, caramel, peanuts, and peanut butter in a milk chocolate coating. What is this caloric delight called?

Answer: Take 5

"Take 5" is a relatively new candybar in the Hershey empire, being introduced to the public in late 2004. The "5" in the name is a reference to the five items included in the candybar.
9. Hershey markets a candy bar with a very funny name. It contains a peanut flavored crisp, caramel, and a milk chocolate coating. What do you call it?

Answer: Whatchamacallit

"Whatchamacallit" is an original Hershey product, introduced to the marketplace in 1978. The candy is also marketed in Canada by Hershey under the name "Special Crisp" (not as much fun to say). In a very funny television marketing campaign in the 1980s, people were asked to say the name of the candy bar, and you wouldn't believe some of the responses that this request got.
10. A favorite of US movie-goers everywhere, what malt flavored balls covered in chocolate have been popular for many years?

Answer: Whoppers

"Whoppers" have been around since 1939. Originally produced by The Overland Candy Company, the original name for these candies were "Giants". When Overland was acquired by Leaf Brands in 1947, they acquired the recipe for the candies, and started producing them in 1949 under the name "Whoppers". This is another of Hershey Corp.'s acquisitions from Leaf Inc. in 1996.
11. Which confectionery, popular at Easter, is actually a Hershey produced product in the United States?

Answer: Cadbury Creme Eggs

Hershey Corp. acquired the US license to Cadbury's chocolate business in 1988. The full line of Cadbury candy is still sold in the U.S. under the Cadbury name, but is a 100% Hershey's product.
12. Ok, here's a rare failure by Hershey. This chocolate covered bar was filled with a cocoa wafer, a chocolate filling and peanuts. What was the name of this doomed candy bar?

Answer: Bar None

"Bar None" was an original Hershey product, created in the 1980s and released to the public in 1986. After testing in California, it went nationwide in 1987. After slow sales for a couple of years, the bar was re-fromulated and caramel filling replaced the chocolate filling from the initial release.

After a few more years of very little public acceptance, the bar was discontinued in 1993.
13. This funny colored candy bar is made up of caramel, peanut and almond nougat covered in a white fudge. What is this unusually colored candy bar with an unusual name called?

Answer: Zero

"Zero" has been around since 1920. It is completely white, which is odd for a candy bar. It was first produced by Hollywood Brands, of Minnesota. Originally called the "Double Zero Bar", the name was shortened to "Zero' in 1934. Through a series of sales, the company and the candy bar became a part of Leaf Inc. which was purchased by Hershey Foods in 1996.
14. Let's move on to some non-chocolate Hershey's sweets. This chewing gum is one of the most popular on the market. It comes in numerous flavors. It's really yummy. What is its name?

Answer: Bubble Yum

"Bubble Yum" was introduced by the Life Savers Company in 1975. At the time it was the first soft bubble gum ever produced. Sales were so brisk that for a time, the company had to stop advertising it so they they could keep production up to the level of demand for the goody. An ugly rumor was spread that the way the company made the gum soft was to use spider eggs. That was dispelled by the company and the sales of the gum soon passed that of Life Savers candy.

The gum continued to succeed and The Hershey Corp. acquired the product in 2000.
15. Another candy bar, which has NO chocolate has been popular for decades. It simply consists of caramel which has a peanut coating. Can you cash in with the name of this sweet treat?

"Payday" was first brought to the public in 1932 by a gentleman named Frank Martoccio, who owned a macaroni company. He later became head of Hollywood Brands, a candy company which also made the "Zero" bar. "Payday" followed the same path, becoming a member of the Hershey's family through a series of companies being purchased, ultimately coming over, along with the "Zero" bar, from Leaf Inc. in 1996.
16. This candy bar is unusual in that it is mostly purchased online. It consists of peanut butter and toasted coconut. What's this candy?

Answer: Zagnut

"Zagnut" was first brought to the public in 1930 by the D.L. Clark company. The candy bar has only a small market and is rarely stocked by stores. Most sales of "Zagnut" occur online. The rights to this candy bar were acquired Hershey in 1996.
17. Originally produced in Colorado, these hard candies are a favorite among all age groups. But which ones are they? Tell me.

Answer: Jolly Rancher

Originally produced by The Jolly Rancher Company of Golden, Colorado, production on the candy started in 1949. The company was actually an ice-cream company that started to produce candy to sell as a side item in their Denver stores. As sales grew, the company was forced to concentrate on candy production and the ice cream business waned.

The company moved production to a larger facility in 1951. Again, through a number of corporate sales, the "Jolly Rancher" name ended up with Leaf Inc. which was sold to Hershey in 1996.

The "Jolly Rancher" name since has expanded to fruit chews and jelly beans in addition to the popular hard candies. The line is no longer manufactured in Colorado. Production stopped there in 2002. Production of all "Jolly Rancher" products has since been moved to Canada.
18. This is the oldest brand of candy produced in the U.S. It comes in colors. It has a hard outer shell with a distinctively flavored filling. It is another movie goer's favorite. Ok, enough clues. Which candy is it?

Anyone around in the 1960s remembers "Choo Choo Charlie", the engineer who needed "Good & Plenty' to make his train run. One note of caution.

The pink candies are colored with a solution called K-Carmine, which is a common coloring additive used in certain foods, but also paint, ink and also women's cosmetics. Carmine is made from certain insects and can cause allergic reactions in some people.
19. This stringy candy had no particular name when first produced, but has been around since the 1800s. At that time it came in one flavor only. These days the candy has a name, and also comes in a number of flavors. What's the common name for all these flavors?

Answer: Twizzlers

The company was acquired by Hershey in 1977. Starting in 1990, Twizzlers could no longer be called just licorice, since the company started producing the twisted rods in cherry, chocolate, strawberry, and watermelon, in addition to the traditional flavor, and have produced some limited edition flavors as well. Yes, "Twizzlers", a dentist's delight.
20. One of the newest of the Hershey candies is this combination of crisp rice and marshmallow, held together with chocolate. What's the name of this recent entry into the world of sweets?
