Crum invented the chip after a frustrated customer continuously returned french fries, claiming they were too thick for his tastes. Crum decided to make them thinner and where they didn't need to be eaten with a fork.

Crum was working as a chef in Saratoga Springs and allegedly served the first potato chips to Cornelius Vanderbilt in 1853, but this has been debunked - recipes have been documented as early as the late 1810s.

Mike-sell's originated in Dayton, Ohio, in 1910. The first potato chips they sold were in tin cans or customers had to scoop them out of glass bins.
