Blue gill tend to stay in shallow waters close to the shore and although they can be brought through the ice; the New England ice fisherman is usually not fishing for blue gill. Smelt is a small bait fish which is often caught on a jig. Cusk is related to the wolf fish and is caught at night with dead bait.
