Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first thing you will need of course is a fishing rod. Which of these is a type of fishing rod?

Answer: Ugly stick

The Ugly Stick was made by Shakespeare tackle. They have been in the business of making and selling fishing gear for over 100 years. The other three choices, Deepwater cisco, Salado shiner, and Whiteline topminnow are all species of fish that are now extinct.
2. Once you have purchased a rod, you will need to buy a reel to go with it. Which type of reel is the easiest for most beginners to start out with?

Answer: Close face spin cast reel

Fishing reels come in so many styles! Each style of reel is designed with a different type of fishing and experience level in mind. Children and beginners usually start off with basic closed-face spin casting reels. These fishing reels are quite easy to operate. Kids love to catch fish like perch, and other small pond and lake fish. Close face spin cast reels are inexpensive and hold up well to any rough use by children. All the sensitive or breakable parts of this type of reel are kept safely inside a protective outer casing.

The casing is usually made from things like aluminum, stainless steel, or a hard plastic. The spinning reel, bait casting reel, and fly fishing reel are all reels for more experienced fishing persons.
3. With rod and reel in hand, you will need some fishing line. There are so many to choose from. Which of these is not one of the important factors when choosing fishing line?

Answer: Brand name

Fishing line is any line made and used for fishing. Some of the important things to think about, when shopping for fishing line, are its length, the material it is made out of, and the weight of the line. Fish can see thicker lines a lot easier, so this can reduce the one's chance of catching the fish.

Some important things that may help you to decide which line to choose are the line's breaking resistance, the line's strength for holding a knot securely, the resistance to wear from UV light, how easily the line will cast, whether or not the line is limp or rigid, how much the line will stretch, how well it stands up to normal wear, and how visible the line is to the fish when it is in the water.

The brand name of the fishing line makes no difference whatsoever.
4. When your rod, reel, and line are assembled, you will want to put a lure on the line and start fishing. Do you know which of these is not a type of lure?

Answer: Swivel

A swivel is a small contraption that is made up of two rings that are connected to a joint that pivots. The fishing line is tied to one of the rings and a length of fishing line is tied to the other, with a hook or lure attached to it. The reason most fisherpersons use a swivel is to help keep the line from twisting or getting tangled up when you reel in. Spoons are simple metal lures that look a lot like a real spoon and come in assorted colors. When you reel them in they make a wobbling motion and that motion attracts fish. They are not expensive and are pretty easy to use. Spoons are a great choice of lure for most beginners.

Spinners have a dull and shiny blade that rotates. This motion makes a reflection that looks like light shining off of the fish's scales in the water. When you reel in a spinner, you can change the speed that you reel and then it makes the lure look like a hurt or dieing fish. The fish you are trying to catch will attack the tasty looking lure because they think it is an easy meal to catch.

Jerk baits don't have any movement without the fisherperson jerking on them. This will make them look like a wounded fish or worm. After you cast them into the water, make a jerky motion with your rod. This will make the lure behave like an injured fish. This action makes the lure look like a tasty treat to the fish that you are trying to catch.
5. You are ready to go fishing. You have decided to fish for trout. Which of these is not a type of trout?

Answer: Harlequin

Trout is the common name given to a number of species of freshwater fish. The average length of a rainbow trout is 12-18 inches. The steelhead, which is also a type of a rainbow trout, but larger, is 20-30 inches. A full grown steelhead usually weighs 8-9 pounds.

Some have been known to reach 36 pounds. I would call that a lunker! Trout that live in streams or if they are spawning end up darker in color. The trout that live in lakes are brighter, lighter in color and have more of a silvery kind of shine to their scales.

Their colors can be steel-blue, blue-green, yellow-green and brown. Steelhead fish tend to be more silvery. The trout all have a number of small black spots. The average length of a cutthroat trout is 12-15 inches. Most of the time they weigh from one-half to 17 pounds.

Their head is rather short and shaped like a cone, almost. Their mouth is pretty big with well developed teeth in the upper and lower jaws. The teeth are what really help to identify the cutthroat fish.

A color pattern that they have are two yellow-orange to red lines that are in the folds of the cutthroat's skin. These folds are on each side of the cutthroat's bottom jaw. Small, beautiful, spectacular and really rather awesome is the golden trout. It has really bright and rich colors. It comes from the high country meadows of the Kern Plateau in California, USA. The golden trout is actually California's state fish. These fish are really amazing! One moment they seem to blend into the bottom of the stream where it is really yellowish, then it seems to change into a really pretty gold and red, when the sun shines on it. An adult can be up to 14 inches long and averages from about 1 pound all the way up to 11 pounds. There is no such fish as a harlequin trout.
6. Some fish are dangerous to touch, so you should remove the hook with a hook-remover or a pair of pliers and you should also wear fishing gloves. Which of these fish has poisonous spines?

Answer: Sculpin

The sculpin looks a lot like a red or brown-tinged bass, except that the sculpin is a whole lot spikier. Be careful with this fish! The sharp fin-tip spines are quite poisonous. The poison will cause a pretty painful and burning kind of feeling. Some sculpin wounds have really needed to have medical attention. Get help if someone gets stung and then feels dizzy or has some trouble breathing.

The best first aid that I have heard of, if you do get stung, is to pour some hot (not boiling or scalding)water over the injury.

The heat of the water then neutralize the poison so that the patient will get better sooner. A larkspur is a flower, crown of thorns is a type of starfish, and porcupine trout is another invalid name.
7. When you are out in your boat, you might get stopped for a vessel safety check. What should you always have with you?

Answer: All listed

The vessel display numbers, registration documentation, life jackets,
fire extinguisher, sound devices such as whistles, navigation lights,
first-aid kit, paddle (oars), and tow rope are all of utmost importance to have on your fishing boat for your safety. In many places, if you are missing any or all of these things, you can be fined money and your boat can be impounded. Without safety equipment, proper lights, paddles etc, you are placing your life and that of any passengers in danger.
8. You have headed away from the freshwater lake shore so that you could begin fishing out on the lake in your boat. What type of fish could you expect to catch in a freshwater lake?

Answer: Carp

Carp is a common name for a lot of different kinds of freshwater fish that are from the family Cyprinidae. Carp usually refers only to the bigger fish of the species like the common carp, grass carp, silver carp, and bighead carp. Carp have been a pretty important kind of food fish for a lot of people for many years. They are also a rather popular ornamental fish that people use in their aquariums or ponds, like the koi and the goldfish. The cod, flounder and mackerel are all saltwater fish.
9. You decided that you wanted to try to catch a big catfish. These fish can get rather large, so you had to be ready for a tiring job of reeling one of them in. How many pounds set a record in 1996 for the largest blue catfish ever caught in sport fishing?

Answer: 111 pounds

That largest blue catfish caught, that was on record, was an unbelievable 111 pounds! That is one big fish! This huge fish was caught in Wheeler's Reservoir, Tennessee, USA. William McKinley, who was from Elkmont, Tennessee, caught this gigantic fish on July 5, 1996.
10. You tried fishing every day for two weeks and never even got a nibble. You looked down in the water and you actually saw a fish that could walk. Which of these fish can walk?

Answer: Spotted handfish

This really odd fish moves slowly. Since he doesn't like to swim much, he kind of walks on his pectoral and pelvic fins. The pectoral fins seem to work like little legs and look kind of like human hands. This fish has a white or a creamy colored body. On top of that it is covered in many small orange, brown or black spots.

The spotted handfish is a bottom dwelling fish, which means it likes the bottom of the sea or lake. It lives in all types of silt and sand. It also likes to be in water that is anywhere from shallow to really deep.

When these weird fish spawn they lay a big blob of 80-250 eggs all joined together. These clumps of eggs get deposited onto anything that is attached to the bottom of the sea or lake. The female actually stays with all those eggs until they hatch, which is in about 7 to 8 weeks.
