Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Whether it's at the ball park or at the backyard grill, Americans love their hot dogs! According to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council estimate, how many hot dogs did Americans eat between Memorial Day (last weekend in May) through Labor Day (first weekend in September), 2013?

Answer: 7 billion

Yes, 7 billion hot dogs were consumed in a single summer. That's a rate of 818 hot dogs every second. The leading hot dog consuming city is Los Angeles. The Council estimates that L.A. Dodgers fans will eat over 3 million hot dogs in just one season. According to a Nielsen analysis, more than 21 million hot dogs were served cross the 30 Major League Baseball stadiums during 2014. Between stadiums, restaurants and grocery stores Americans spend $2.5 billion every year on our favorite sausage.

2. Is Jagdwurst a type of sausage?

Answer: Yes

Yes the Jagdwurst is a German sausage made of lean beef and pork. It originates from the former East Germany where the ingredients such as belly of pork, salt, pepper, garlic, mustard seed, capsicum, mace, cardamom and water mixed together made the sausage juicy. 20% of this sausage is fat but the mince within has to be finely chopped.

3. Captain Hook would be very pleased that this reptile is used to make some very tasty sausages for the good old Aussie BBQ. What reptile is used to make these delicious sausages?

Answer: crocodile

Australian Saltwater Crocodiles are raised on crocodile farms. The Koorana Crocodile Farm is not far from where I live. They are managed in accordance with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). 100 grams of crocodile meat contains only 1.9 grams of fat whereas chicken breast, beef sirloin and lamb all contain much, much more.

4. France: Andouillettes are very special sausages. Some people love them, some people just can't get used to them. Why is that?

Answer: They are made from intestines and smell like it

The basic ingredients of andouillettes are pork (sometimes veal) intestines, onions, wine, herbs and spices. Depending on the part of the intestines used, the smell can be more or less, well, aromatic. They do have a fan club of connoisseurs, the AAAAA (Association Amicale des Amateurs d'Andouillette Authentique). I once was treated to a visit in a very nice restaurant close to Centre Pompidou, specializing in food of the Massif Central. I wasn't really given a choice of the menu, andouillettes I had to try. I couldn't bring myself to eat much of them, but I really liked the cheesy mashed potatoes called aligot.
