Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Each summer, Spivey's Corner, North Carolina, hosts a national contest involving an old-fashioned means of communicating in rural areas and farms. Exactly what kind of champion are the contestants trying to become?

Answer: Hollerin'

Spivey's Corner (population a bit more than 500 in 2010) has held the National Hollerin' Contest since 1969. Hollerin' (Southerners drop the final 'g' on most words) was a way to summon help, call the field workers to meals, and call hogs and other livestock to feed before phones on farms.

Hollerin' isn't just noise; different sounds and cries mean different things and can vary by area. My grandmother's favorite response when she was out in the field was "Woooo!" to signify her location and "Yaaaa!" to let you know she was on her way back to the house.

2. At the end of January, the city of Tampa, Florida holds a festival to commemorate a legendary event from the late 18th century that never actually happened. What is the name of this festival?

Answer: The Gasparilla Pirate Festival

The Summer of Rum and Guavaween Festivals both take place in Ybor City, Florida, while the Florida Strawberry Festival is held in Plant City, Florida.

The Gasparilla Pirate Festival reenacts the sacking of the city by the infamous Spanish pirate, Jose Gaspar. Local legend tells how he sailed in the late 1700s plundering ships along the Spanish Main, until the captain and his crew were eventually overcome by the U.S.S. Enterprise in the early 1820s.

Unfortunately, the U.S. Navy has no records of this encounter taking place. In fact, old travel brochures show that this legend was started by land developers in the early 1900s to entice people to move to Florida.

3. The National Arts Festival is held in Grahamstown, South Africa, annually at the end of June/beginning of July. Why was the festival originally created?

Answer: As a living memorial to the 1820 British settlers of South Africa

The 1820 Settlers Monument was erected in 1974 and the festival was established that same year to create a "living" memorial of the settlers for years to come. The 1820 settlers were well-known for their large carnivals and festivals, and the monument was created to honor their legacy.

Even during the apartheid era, freedom of expression was maintained, so the festival formed a platform for political protest and new ideas. Presently, it is one of the biggest Arts Festivals on the African continent. Over 200,000 people came to the festival in 2011.

4. Wilkes County Community College in North Carolina is home to a four-day music festival each April. With numerous stages and several musical genres, what festival was hosted by guitarist Doc Watson until his death?

Answer: MerleFest

Named in memory of Merle, Doc Watson's son, the festival is one of the college's major fundraisers. It is one of the largest music festivals in the U.S. and is a major tourist attraction for North Carolina. From folk to jazz and beyond, you haven't heard music until you've been to MerleFest.

5. Winningen is one of those quaint, picturesque towns on the river Mosel. Each year on Easter Sunday, it attracts visitors from the neighboring towns and the occasional visitor from abroad with a quirky kind of festival. What do visitors watch or participate in at the festival?

Answer: Boiled egg dueling

The eggs used in boiled egg dueling have two sides, the tip and the broad butt. When two people have a duel, they hit tips together first, then butts. When a person's egg has neither tip nor butt intact, it is lost to the opponent. If either tip or butt is still intact, the person looks for another partner whose egg matches their own. Eggs have to be hard boiled, and you can bring your own or buy on location. If you go, be prepared to have egg salad for dinner as even grown ups sometimes get carried away with the winning eggs.

Of course, there are other things to enjoy at "Eier-Kippen in Winningen", as there will be "Blasmusik" (brass music), food, beer, and - as this is wine country - local wine. Be warned of a concoction called egg wine, a kind of "Glühwein" (mulled wine) on a white wine basis.

6. Known as the "Festival of Lights," this festival is one of the most prominent Hindu festivals. Which festival am I talking about?

Answer: Deepawali (Diwali)

Deepawali is one of the most prominent and famous festival of Hindus. It is said that this festival started when the Hindu lord Sri Rama killed the devil Ravana and came back to Ayodhya after his 14 years of exile. On the day of Deepawali, Lord Ganesh and Lordess Lakshmi are worshipped. To put it simply, Deepawali marks the victory of good over evil In life (according to auroville.org).

7. Every year since 1988, luminaries such as Bill Clinton, Desmond Tutu, Harry Belafonte and Salman Rushdie have visited the small Welsh town of Hay on Wye to attend a festival devoted to what?

Answer: Literature and Arts

Hay is a tiny town full of book shops, with a population of less than 1,500, which swells by up to 80,000 visitors each year for its festival, which Clinton once described as "The Woodstock of the mind". As for the other choices, Wales also has a jazz festival and the World Bog Snorkelling Championship, but they do not take place in Hay. They take place at nearby Brecon and Llanwrtyd Wells respectively.

There actually is a World's Biggest Liar contest, but it has nothing to do with Wales. It's held in Cumbria, England. Even if Bill Clinton wanted to enter, he could not - politicians and lawyers are rightly excluded from competition.

8. The Golden Mount Festival is held annually in the historic town of Mount Morgan in Queensland. One of the events is the "Running of the Cutter". What do the runners in this event have to do?

Answer: Run from pub to pub

Relay teams compete in the "Running of the Cutter". They have to run from pub to pub and scull a beer along the way. The race starts and finishes at the "Running the Cutter" statue. The race is run in honour of the gold miners of Mount Morgan who used to pay sixpence to have someone run down to the pub with their billy cans and run it back to them filled with beer. Cheese was rubbed on the bottom of the billy can to stop the beer frothing up. Junior relay teams in the "Running of the Cutter" have to drink soft drinks as they are under 18 and can't drink beer.

9. Which Queen is crowned near the end of summer and plays a key role in the Eugene Celebration festival in Eugene, Oregon?

Answer: SLUG Queen

SLUG is an acronym for the Society for the Legitimization of the Ubiquitous Gastropod. The SLUG Queen is an unofficial representative of the city of Eugene and rides in the Eugene Celebration parade. The SLUG Queen is crowned through a pageant-like competition. Wacky outfits and wacky names are encouraged in the pageant. Past winners such as Queen Slimy Stitches and Queen Slima-Gadda-Da-Vida-Baby are known as Old Queens. Strange as it may seem, men have won the title of SLUG Queen several times. The pageant is all done in good fun but all funds raised go to charities.
