Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the long long ago, the Iberian peninsula was invaded by Romans who introduced olives to the region. The majority of these snack items have olives, or olive oil amongst many other ingredients. What versatile and varied Spanish food genre are we enjoying?

Answer: Tapas

After the Romans, the invading Moors brought along almonds, new spices and citrus fruits. Eventually expeditions to the "New World" also introduced tomatoes, peppers, potatoes and corn and a whole new world of cuisine was created.

All of the incorrect answers are normally considered to be Mexican dishes and do not usually contain olives (unless you choose to add them).
2. You've decided to have an "Italian" party theme and you've served up plates layered with raw and pickled vegetables, cured meats, along with various cheeses. What would these platters of foods be called?

Answer: Antipasti

All the incorrect answers involve bread of some sort. In Italian "antipasti" (or the singular form "antipasto") means "before the meal" and is often served instead of what "westerners" would call a "salad".

Traditional items are olives, artichokes, prosciutto (dry cured ham, sort of similar to bacon), salami or other deli meats such as peperoncini, onions, mushrooms and provolone or mozzarella cheeses. Buon appetito!
3. This "condiment" is green and gooey. Often served as either a dipping sauce or a side dish, it must be inundated with lemon or lime juice to prevent it from turning brown. What concoction is this?

Answer: Guacamole

In some parts of Mexico, guacamole is considered to "go" with literally everything. If you hang out in the more "tourist-y" locations in that country, you'll probably get tired of seeing it on your plate. However, it tastes good if done right and has an interesting colour - but it's also incredibly high in fat content due to the avocados. Easy does it!
4. We're in Quebec. Before watching the Montreal Canadiens play hockey, we're enjoying pastries stuffed with ground beef, pork and/or veal, onions, spices (and sometimes potatoes). What are these filling snacks called?

Answer: Tourtieres

The incorrect options are all usually considered to be dessert items. Tourtieres can be either a "full meal deal" or a snack item if they are made in the size of tarts. They are a traditional dish served either on Christmas Eve or New Year's Eve in Quebec (Canada). Several of the U.S. states in the northeast are also known to serve a version of this dish.
5. Okay, we've got some sausage meat and some hard boiled eggs. We've wrapped the eggs with the meat and deep-fried them with bread crumbs. There's some mustard sauce on the side. What are we eating?

Answer: Scotch Eggs

Scotch Eggs are often a "picnic" item in the UK. They can also be served "hot" (usually with a gravy) as part of a full meal. In the US (particularly the New England States) they are frequently served with a dipping sauce, such as mustard or ranch dressing.
6. Latkes are a type of pancake which originated in northern Europe. What is their main ingredient?

Answer: Potatoes

While variations certainly exist throughout the world, latkes are generally made with grated potatoes and flour, with egg to hold them together and then pan-fried. They're a great snack as you can serve them hot (salty or spicy) with sour cream or even as a sort of dessert if they are topped with something sweet like apple sauce or other fruits and/or sugar and cinnamon.
7. Every region in the world has its own form of savoury dumpling or turnover. Somewhat similar to samosas, what portable food item can you find in South America and Argentina in particular?

Answer: Empanadas

They're not called "mmmmmm"panadas for no reason. Using a fairly traditional pie crust recipe (which sometimes contains cheese), they are generally filled mostly with ground meat along with whatever additions the host prefers. Favourite condiments are usually sour cream and salsa. Empanadas can also be served for dessert if the filling is fruit.
8. You are eating seafood sauteed with mushrooms and onions in a wine/cream sauce. Topped with breadcrumbs and then broiled or baked, what are you serving to your guests in cute little clam-shaped white dishes?

Answer: Coquilles St. Jacques

Some folks who are lucky enough to live near a fish market serve the dish using the original shell as a "plate". Coquilles St. Jacques are made from scallops and although it sounds fancy and complicated, the dish is a fairly easy appetizer to prepare. It can be "made ahead" and broiled at the last minute prior to actual serving. Delicious!

Crab legs are normally steamed and served "as is". Lobster Thermidor is precooked lobster that has been mixed with other ingredients and then stuffed back into the shell (sort of the same idea as a twice-baked potato). Oysters Rockfeller are easily recognized as they are usually predominantly green in colour (hopefully due to the herbs and not for other reasons!).
9. People the world over appreciate a good burger, no matter what meat is used. What are the "mini" versions called?

Answer: Sliders

You can, of course, opt for a vegetarian Slider. Because they are quite small (usually served on a "parker roll" size bun), whatever type you choose is a perfect appetizer. If you load them up and are creative regarding the additions, they're sure to "wow" your guests.
10. One of the ubiquitous party foods in North America is nachos. Aside from the tortilla chips, what is the other main ingredient?

Answer: cheese

You can certainly put all sort of items on nachos, but they wouldn't be quite as good without the cheese. It's no wonder they are so popular - how many snack foods have gooey, salty, spicy and crunchy all going for them at the same time? (Here's your napkin).
