Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which American playing card brand celebrated its 125th anniversary in the year 2010?

Answer: The Bicycle Playing Card

The Bicycle Playing Card Company originated in the city of Cincinnati, Ohio. Bicycle playing cards are manufactured by the US Playing Card Company. Most of us who play card games are familiar with the distinctive designs on the back of their cards.

The backs of the cards are usually red or blue and always have a bicycle design on them. The bicycle was chosen as a logo because bicycles were very popular in the late 1800's. Some special editions, or collectors' items can have different designs. You may also submit your own design or personal photographs to be placed on the card backs.
2. As a family game, we called this particular card game, Oh Darn It. Known by other names, for what reason did we choose this particular title?

Answer: To change the words of its other known titles

The card game we call Oh Darn It has other popular, titles starting in "Oh" which would not quite be appropriate to include in this quiz. Because all the cards in the deck are not used, if you are not on the lead, quite disastrous things can happen when you think you have sure tricks. This at times results in many different expletives being shouted. On the first round 10 cards are dealt to each of the players. A trump suit is established, and the players, in turn from the dealer, say aloud how many winning tricks they think they can take. If you win the exact number that you bid your score is 10, and the winning perfect score is 100. Any other amount is recorded as the exact amount you won. The next deal is then 9 cards, then, 8, until you arrive at receiving only one card. Bidding rules stay the same on every round with 10 rounds altogether. As your cards decrease, it becomes more difficult to predict your winning tricks, and "Oh Darn It!" is frequently heard.
A fun card game which non-card players can pick up easily for a social occasion.
There are other variations to how "Oh Darn It" can be played, but this description fits them all in general.
3. Which form of the card game, Bridge, is the only form played in North American Contract League Tournaments?

Answer: Duplicate Bridge

Duplicate Bridge is the form used in all North American Bridge Tournaments. There are three sponsored North American Championship Tournaments conducted in a year. Geographically there is one in each of three zones, the East, Central, and West parts of the US or Canada. To minimize luck and give all tournament players a decent chance, all pairs in the tournament play the exact same hands, either on offense or defense.

The upshot of it all is that the boards are passed from table to table with a paper in it called the "traveller". North fills out the results from their table on the traveller and at the end of the day/evening the combined results are tallied and the winners playing North-South, and those playing East-West are announced and Master Points accrued.
4. Which political head of a government said, "Life is like a game of cards. The hand that is dealt you represents determinism. The way you play it is free will."?

Answer: Jawaharlal Nehru

This quote by former Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru using the simile of card playing is a more formal, philosophical way of expressing how playing cards can be compared to the way we live our lives. Most of us are more familiar with a number of everyday expressions similar to that of Prime Minister Nehru's, though not as profoundly expressed.

Some common expressions close to Mr. Nehru's quotation are: "The cards are stacked against me", "We need to play our cards right," "It's all in the cards", "You have to play the hand you are dealt", and many more. Do you think one might be able to find fifty-two quotes on the same theme?
5. Which of these is not considered a child's card game?

Answer: Poker

Go Fish, Old Maid, and War are simple children's card games that hopefully have aided children to learn to count, to understand rules, and to win or lose gracefully. Many countries have different names for them but have the same concept and many of the same rules. Russian Fish differs from Go Fish as it is a team game and 6 persons must be in the game.

In France, Old Maid is known as Vieux Garçon, or Old Boy. The Russian version of the children's card game War is in their language "P'yanitsa", translated to English, "Drunkard".
6. What was special about the Bicycle playing cards sent to American prisoners of war in Germany during World War II?

Answer: They revealed escape routes

During World War II, The Bicycle Playing Card Company and the United States government made a secret agreement. The card company would print escape routes that would be placed in between the front and back of their cards. When the the cards were moistened the special paper that had been inserted in between was seen.

The paper had maps with escape routes printed on it. These special gift cards from The Bicycle Playing Card Company were then mailed to American prisoners of war in Germany.
7. Which card game, that is best played by only two players, has the 10 of diamonds and the 2 of spades as special scoring cards?

Answer: Cassino

In the card game Cassino, (or Casino), the diamond 10, known as Big Cassino, and the spade 2, called Little Cassino, have point values if you either capture them or subtracting values if you are left with them. Cassino is a fishing type card game using a 52 deck of cards, and best played with two players. Four cards are dealt one at a time, to each of the players.

The winning score of the game is 21. Capturing aces, spades, big and little casino, and have the most amount of won cards is how points are made.

A fun card game for two of which there seems to be very few.
8. Which card game that originated in South America, became a popular USA fad in the 1950s?

Answer: Canasta

During the summer of the late 1950s, with our friends, we would have teams playing Canasta on the front porch, in the dining room, and in the kitchen. We played daily. A big thank you from us to Segundo Sanchez and his Bridge playing partner Alberto Serrato who gave us the opportunity for this summer fun. Senor Sanchez, an attorney who spent much time at the Jockey Club in Montevideo, Uruguay, bored with Bridge, began with his partner, to devise a new card game combining Rummy and Bridge. Within a month the two had developed a new partnership game. Senors Sanchez and Serrato, with another pair tested the game at a local restaurant. Receiving an enthusiastic response from their friends, they needed a name for the new game. Looking about the restaurant Senor Sanchez spied a basket and the name Canasta, (Spanish for basket) was adopted.

The game sped like wildfire throughout South America, into Europe and the United States. In a short time, Canasta was a world-wide card game.
9. In which card game can a player "shoot the moon"?

Answer: Hearts

In the game of Hearts if you collect all of the heart suit plus the queen of spades in your won tricks, you will have, "shot the moon". Shooting the moon is difficult to obtain if your opponents pass you three cards which can stop the process or if one of your opponents is willing to take a costly trick to defeat an opponent from trying to shoot the moon. Luck of the deal also enters into it.

It is said the phrase "shoot the moon" originated from an old expression of when a person attempts the near impossible.
10. In partnership auction pinochle, which is the second highest ranked card?

Answer: The ten

There are 48 cards in a standard American pinochle deck and there are doubles of each of the cards. The deck consists of aces, kings, queens, jacks, 10s, and 9s. The double aces ranking first, then the double 10s second, the double kings, queens, jacks, nines following. Each person is dealt twelve cards.

In Pinochle, a run consists of an A 10 K Q J of the same suit, in that order. A run counts 15 points to meld. If you have the nine of that suit then you have 16 meld points. To have a run with AA10KQJ in the same suit is a strong playing hand as long as you gain the bid and can name your suit trump.
