Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When playing horseshoes if you throw a Hobber, where is your horseshoe?

Answer: Leaning against the post

There are three ways to score points in horseshoes: ringers, leaners, and being the closest to the stake if neither of the other two apply. Note: the shoe has to stay in the pit to have points considered.
2. In the US, what are the wire arches called that are used to play croquet?

Answer: Wickets

By the rules, on a nine wicket setup, the first player or team to score eight points wins.
3. Which of the following backyard games is an official event in the modern Summer Olympics?

Answer: Badminton

The gold medal is highly contested in this sport with many of the best players coming from Asia. It combines both delicate shots and hard smashes to walk away with the gold in this sport.
4. Which of the following lawn sports governing bodies was founded first?

Answer: National Horseshoe Pitchers Association

The NHPA was founded in 1914 in Kansas City, Mo., USA Volleyball in 1928, and the US Croquet Association in 1977. I'm not sure if Hacky Sack has an official association, if you know of one please let me know.
5. The inventor of the frisbee marketed his new invention under what name?

Answer: Pluto Platter

Walter Fredrick Morrison sold the rights to this new toy in 1955 to the Wham-O Company.
6. What country banned the sale of lawn darts in 1988?

Answer: USA

Lawn darts were typically 12" long with tips made of hard plastic or metal. From a predetermined distance you threw them towards a hoop to score points by getting the darts inside. Unfortunately they have caused thousands of injuries and three deaths due to bad throws. The Consumer Product Safety Commission urged those that already had them to destroy them.
7. What was another name for a predecessor of the badminton game?

Answer: Shuttlecock

Technically called "Battledore and Shuttlecock", badminton's predecessor game was colloquially quickly just referred to as "shuttlecock", referring to its namesake implement. Unlike badminton, it was played without a net. Dating back to ancient Greece, China, and India, the name badminton came later. Once popular in England, it got its name from someone's house in the 1850s.

It came from Badminton House, the home of the Duke of Beaufort, in Gloucestershire, England.
8. In croquet there are six colored balls: black, orange, red, yellow, blue, and green. Which color goes first when you start a game?

Answer: Blue

You can remember the order of play by looking at the stakes. From top to bottom the colors are listed in order of play.
9. What lawn game is played similar to curling?

Answer: Lawn bowling

In lawn bowl you roll a biased (offcenter, so it curves) 3.5 pound ball at another smaller white ball called a 'Jack' trying to be the closest possible and moving opponents' balls that might score.
10. David Mullany invented what game after being inspired by watching his son playing stickball with a plastic golfball?

Answer: Wiffleball

This was my brother's and my favorite game as youths but we modified the rules a little. We used a solid plastic ball, rather than one with holes. We cut out a homeplate from plastic, used a pine tree root as the mound, and the pitcher called balls and strikes. We set up a homerun line about 25-30 yards out and foul lines as well. If you caught the ball in the air or on one bounce it was an out, even over the homerun line. We kept track of runners and scoring, and played five inning games. Fastballs were not allowed so the knuckleball became the out pitch. Once you learned to throw it, and being such a light weight ball, you could throw some amazing pitches.

A sharp breaking curveball also worked well.
