Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Boozy treat? Not always!

Answer: Trifle

Although one can sometimes indulge oneself with a sherry trifle, and possibly become a bit tipsy, a family-friendly version exists that simply omits the lashings of sherry. Both versions contain layers of cake, custard and fruit and are scrumptious.
2. British apple dessert

Answer: Eve's pudding

The name of this traditional dish is a reference to the Biblical Eve, and her encounter with an apple, and may or may not imply that the dessert is sinful! Sponge cake and apples are the main ingredients, with sugar, lemon juice and raisins among the other possible flavourings.
3. Coffee-flavoured Italian treat

Answer: Tiramisu

Reputed to have been invented in the brothels of a northern Italian town, tiramisu is yet another yummy dessert that might be labelled sinful! Ladyfingers are dipped in coffee, then combined with mascarpone cheese, eggs, sugar, possibly cocoa and other goodies and then, well, "Yum!"
4. Dancer's namesake meringue

Answer: Pavlova

Named for the Russian ballerina, Anna Pavlova, this dessert differs from a simple meringue in its variety of textures - crisp exterior and softer, gooier interior. Often topped with fruit of one variety or another, this treat is claimed by both Australia and New Zealand as their own.
5. Fuzzy fruit dish for Nellie

Answer: Peach Melba

Peaches (the fuzzy fruit) and raspberry sauce, served over ice cream constitute the dish invented by chef Escoffier to honour opera singer Nellie Melba in the 1890s. Variations for the preparation of the peaches include poaching them in lemon juice, adding almonds and various means of sweetening the concoction.
6. Good school's untidy treat

Answer: Eton mess

Believed to have first been concocted at England's Eton College in the late nineteenth century, the Eton mess consists of crushed meringue, strawberries and whipped cream and is said to be best eaten out of doors. It is traditionally served at the annual cricket match between Eton and Harrow, another notable English public school.
7. Provincial bag pudding

Answer: Figgy duff

The province in question is Canada's Newfoundland and Labrador, and figgy duff is a pudding, which, despite its name, contains no figs. "Figgy" in this case, comes from an old Cornish word for raisins, which are a main ingredient of this dish, which is prepared by stuffing all the ingredients in a cheesecloth bag, which then is put inside a can, and boiled until ready. Relatives of figgy duff are Scotland's clootie dumpling and England's spotted dick. Oh, "duff" just means pudding.
8. Stately frozen treat

Answer: Baked Alaska

Following the Canadian province, an American state, in this case it's Alaska and that sweet conundrum that is the baked Alaska, consisting of ice cream and cake inside a meringue, that is browned in an oven - without melting the ice cream! Apparently the meringue acts an an insulator (and the ice cream has to be really well frozen).
9. Sweet, sticky eastern Mediterranean pastry

Answer: Baklava

Baklava consists of layers of phyllo pastry, sweetened and enhanced in different ways depending on where it is made. The Greek version is likely to use honey and walnuts, while if it's from Turkey the nuts might be pistachios and the sweetener some form of syrup. Either way, the result is a very sweet taste experience and extremely sticky fingers.
10. Yellow fruit, toffee, graham cracker crust

Answer: Banoffee pie

Banoffee pie is an English invention that combines sliced bananas, toffee, a crust made of crushed graham crackers (or other biscuits) and for a really, really sweet experience, sweetened condensed milk. Optional ingredients include coffee, cocoa, chocolate and butter (though it's not really optional). I've eaten this only once, and found it too rich for my taste, but others seem to really enjoy it.
