Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. ANIMALS: how long is the gestational period of a Siberian tiger?

Answer: 3-3.5 months

The female Siberian tiger gives birth to litters of two to four cubs on average, though some litters can contain as many as six cubs. The cubs are born blind and are the size of an average pet cat. The mating season is usually between December and January, although they have been known to mate at other times of the year, and the female attracts the attention of the male by scratching and urinating on trees.
2. BRAIN TEASERS: 'bangle' is an anagram of which species of tiger?

Answer: bengal

If you're a football fan, you'll probably be familiar with the Cincinnati Bengals and their black and orange kit. They get their name from the Bengal tiger, a subspecies of tiger native to the Indian subcontinent. It is the national animal of both India and Bangladesh, and can also be found in Myanmar, Bhutan and Nepal.

Some of South Asia's most notorious man-eating tigers, such as the Champawat Tiger, the Thak man-eater and the Tigers of Chowgarh (all of whom lived on the Nepal/India border) have been Bengal tigers.

It should be noted, however, that humans are not tigers' primary food source and that their usual prey consists of animals such as wild boar, deer and grey langur monkeys.
3. CELEBRITIES: what is the real name of golfer Tiger Woods?

Answer: Eldrick

Or, to give him his full name, Eldrick Tont Woods. 'Eldrick' is a mixture of Woods' parents' names, Earl and Kultilda. Woods' mother was Thai, hence his Thai middle name, and his father met her while stationed in Thailand. Woods got his nickname of 'Tiger' from Colonel Vuong Dang Phong, a Vietnamese friend of his father's who was also nicknamed 'Tiger'.

The holder of several golfing records, he started playing golf as a toddler and turned professional in 1996 at the age of twenty, and won PGA Player of the Year the following year (and many times after that).
4. ENTERTAINMENT: Jim Watterson was the creator of a strip about an imaginative little boy and his toy tiger. The boy's name was Calvin, but what was the name of the tiger?

Answer: Hobbes

Bill Watterson's much-loved 'Calvin and Hobbes' strip ran in various newspapers from 1985 to 1995. The characters are named after the theologian John Calvin and the philosopher Thomas Hobbes. While Hobbes is a stuffed tiger to most people, to his six-year-old owner Calvin, he is alive and has a personality (and is partly based on Watterson's cat).

He is intelligent, a prolific reader and acts as a sort of conscience figure to Calvin, who ignores him most of the time. Watterson retired from drawing the strips in 1995 and rarely gave interviews, preferring to stay relatively private.

He also did not sign autographs or licence his characters, as he felt it would devalue them.
5. FOR CHILDREN: who wrote the children's book 'The Tiger Who Came to Tea'?

Answer: Judith Kerr

Judith Kerr came to the UK as a Jewish refugee during the Second World War and was the author and illustrator of several children's books, including the 'Mog' series, 'How Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit' and 'The Tiger Who Came to Tea'. In 'The Tiger Who came to Tea', a young girl called Sophie and her mother get a visit from a friendly tiger who eats all their food and drinks all the water in the taps.

When Sophie's father comes home, the family go to a cafe for dinner. Although Sophie and her mother buy a tin of tiger food, the tiger never returns. An animated version of the book was shown on Channel 4 in the UK on Christmas Eve 2019, with David Walliams narrating, Benedict Cumberbatch and Tamsin Grieg as Sophie's parents, David Oyelowo as the tiger, and a song from Robbie Williams.

A stage musical version of the book has also been made.
6. GENERAL KNOWLEDGE: what type of gem is tiger's eye?

Answer: Quartz

Tiger's eye is a type of quartz with a chatoyant, or 'cat's eye', effect which gives it the appearance of a shiny material with a fibrous structure (imagine a piece of silk). It is given a cabochon treatment to enhance this effect, which means it is shaped and polished into a rounded shape.

Its colour ranges from yellow to reddish-brown, with a stripy appearance, and it has a Mohs hardness rating of between 5.5 and 6. It can be found in the USA, Brazil and Namibia, amongst other places.
7. GEOGRAPHY: in which country was the area formerly known as Tiger Bay (or 'Bae Teigr' in the local language)?

Answer: Wales

The area known as Tiger Bay encompassed Butetown and Cardiff Docks, and is now known as Cardiff Bay. It got its name from the strong currents of the local tidal stretches of the Severn. In the late 18th to the early 20th century, Wales was a major source of coal exports and the Glamorganshire Canal was built to facilitate this, followed by a basin and the West Bute Dock.

The influx of sailors and merchants from as far away as Somalia and Yemen led to a diverse population forming, and Tiger Bay later became home to a large black community.

In 1994, a redevelopment project for the area began with the construction of the Cardiff Barrage, to supply the bay with water from the Taff and Ely rivers, which faced opposition from local and environmental groups. Singer Shirley Bassey is a native of Tiger Bay; her 2009 album 'The Performance' features the song 'The Girl from Tiger Bay', written by the Manic Street Preachers and composer David Arnold.
8. HISTORY: 1962 was the Year of the Tiger in the Chinese Zodiac. Which of these events occurred in 1962?

Answer: The Cuban Missile Crisis

The Cuban Missile Crisis was a month-long standoff between the USA and the Soviet Union during the Cold War, which began on 16th October 1962, involving ballistic missiles stationed in Cuba by the Soviet Union. As people who were alive then might remember (like my parents), it was a time when nuclear war was a genuine threat. After the attempted invasion of the Bay of Pigs the previous year, Cuban president Fidel Castro and Russian premier Nikita Khrushchev agreed that Soviet missiles would be placed in Cuba to deter further invasions. President Kennedy responded with a blockade to prevent further missiles reaching Cuba. After several tense days of negotiations, Khrushchev agreed to withdraw from Cuba, in return for the USA removing their missiles from Italy and Turkey. The blockade ended on 20th November.

As for the other answers, the Berlin Wall was built in 1961, Kennedy was shot by Lee Harvey Oswald in 1963, and Czechoslovakia was invaded by a combination of Warsaw Pact countries in 1968.
9. HOBBIES: which two flavours does tiger tail ice cream contain?

Answer: Orange and liquorice

Tiger tail ice cream is an orange-flavoured ice cream with liquorice swirls and gets its name from its orange and black pattern, which resembles the striped tail of a tiger. It has a large following in Canada, although it is not often seen outside the country, and was sold in ice cream parlours there from the '50s to the '70s, and beyond.
10. HUMANITIES: 'But the tigers come at night, with their voices soft as thunder, as they tear your hope apart, as they turn your dream to shame.' The song is 'I Dreamed a Dream' from 'Les Miserables', but which character sings it?

Answer: Fantine

Fantine is a working-class woman who becomes pregnant by a rich student. Cosette, her daughter, grows up to be the heroine of the book (and musical). Fantine works in a factory to provide for Cosette, who is living with the Thénardiers, a family who own an inn and treat Cosette badly.

The foreman of the factory makes a play for Fantine, but she rejects him, and he fires her after one of the other factory workers reveals Fantine has a child. Fantine sings 'I Dreamed a Dream' while wandering the streets, and has to sell her locket and hair and become a prostitute in order to survive.

Inspector Javert arrests her, but Jean Valjean - a reformed criminal who owns Fantine's former workplace - intervenes and has her taken to hospital, where she later dies.

She was played by Patti LuPone in the original West End musical and Anne Hathaway in the 2012 film.
