Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the second highest summit in the British Isles?

Answer: Ben Macdui

Ben MacDui is the second highest summit at 4,295ft, after Ben Nevis which is 4,406ft. They are both in Scotland.
2. Who is regarded as the father of British rock climbing?

Answer: W P Haskett-Smith

He climbed Napes Needle in June 1886. His route up Napes Needle is regarded as the first pure rock climb, since it was done to climb a particular route rather than as a way of reaching the summit.
3. Which nationality was Sir Edmund Hilary, the conqueror of Everest?

Answer: New Zealander

As the leader of the famous expedition to conquer Everest in 1953, Hilary was acclaimed as the first man to reach its summit. There is controversy now as to whether the man who was first to step on the summit was Edmund Hilary or Sherpa Tenzing Norgay.
4. Reinhold Messner was one half of the pair who climbed Everest in 1978 without using artificially supplied oxygen. These were the first men to do so. Who was his partner?

Answer: Peter Habeler

On their descent from the summit both men were affected by the oxygen deprivation and could not remember much of it. As part of their training, they climbed together the North Face of the Eiger in about 10 hours.
5. Who was the first man to solo climb the North Face of the Eiger, a 13,025 ft. mountain in the Swiss Alps?

Answer: Michel Darbellay

In 1963, Darbellay performed this audacious solo climb of one the most formidable peaks. Considering the standard of equipment used then compared to that available today, it was an outstanding achievement. Since 1935, over fifty climbers have died attempting the north face.
6. Who was the first British woman to solo climb the North face of the Eiger in the Alps?

Answer: Alison Hargreaves

This was done in 1988, and she was pregnant at the time. She was later to die on an expedition on K2 in the Himalayas in August 1995.
7. Yvon Chouinard invented the French technique method of Ice Climbing.

Answer: False

Chouinard was a great exponent of this technique or the 'pied a plat', but it had been in use for a long time. It is a good method for resting tired calf muscles when front pointing though.
8. Tower Ridge on Ben Nevis, was first climbed from the top down.

Answer: True

Tower Ridge is about 2 miles long and was first descended in September 1892. It was by four brothers, John, Edward, Bernard, and Charles Hopkinson. The first ascent was in 1894 by Collie, Solly, and Collier.
9. Joe Brown and Don Whillans were a famous English climbing partnership from the 1950s and '60s. Which one climbed Cenotaph Corner in the Llanberis Pass, Wales?

Answer: Joe Brown

Too much to write about these two climbers, read the books. They did revolutionize the way rock climbing developed in the UK and abroad.
10. When rock climbing, when would you use a tuber?

Answer: belaying

A tuber was a piece of gear developed by the Italian climbing equipment manufacturer, Camp. Belaying is when a climber feeds the rope through a metal device to safeguard another climber who is on a rope.
