Question 1 of 10
1. This delicious dessert is often assembled with a soupy fruit bottom and baked with a pastry top. The pastry top can be piecrust-like, or, as I prefer, biscuit-like. Hot out of the oven, with a big scoop of ice cream, it's fantastic. What do you call this type of dessert? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. Growing up, my mom called these "Sprinkle and Drizzle Bars". My husband's mother called them "Hello Dollys". These days I've heard them called "Magic Cookie Bars". Either way, they have a graham cracker crust topped with chocolate chips and sweetened condensed milk and baked. One other key ingredient completes this decadent dessert. Can you name it? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. One of my favorite birthday cakes is red velvet cake. My recipe calls for a buttery white frosting thickened with a cooked milk and flour mixture. This is unlike many restaurant and store-made red velvet cakes, which often have a cream cheese frosting. In my opinion, cream cheese frosting should only top pumpkin cake, or another well-known cake, often made with raisins, pecans, and a certain vegetable. Can you name this cake?

Answer: (Two words (include "cake"))
Question 4 of 10
4. Hey, it's summertime, and I've assembled all the ingredients for another delicious dessert. The things I will need include sugar, cream, and rock salt. There may be some elbow grease involved as well! What am I going to make? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. Next I'm going to layer pudding (or custard), brownie or cake chunks, whipped cream, and maybe raspberries or strawberries. I may also add some sherry or rum if it's for adults. I'll need a special glass bowl to really show off those layers, too. What am I making now? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. This one is hands-down my all time favorite cookie. Ingredients include butter, sugar, flour, and of course, "morsels". Name it! Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. This cake is very light and spongy, and is baked in a special cake pan. The interesting thing about this cake is that there are no egg yolks in the recipe. What cake am I talking about? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. This old-fashioned cookie is a favorite of mine at Christmas time. It only has a few ingredients, the main ones being egg whites and coconut. What do you call this cookie? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Guess what I'm making next. I have flour, salt, shortening and ice water for part of it, and I'm going to stew a squash with some spices and bake the whole thing. What in the world am I making? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. This final question is about one of my favorite dessert ingredients. Using this ingredient, you can make a fantastic creamy pie, crispy cookies (with those great fork tine marks), and a decadent cake. We have George Washington Carver to thank for the popularization of this fabulous wonder food. Do you know it? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: cobbler

Blackberries, blueberries, apples, peaches - and combinations of these - all make a fantastic cobbler. We have the American colonists to thank for this dessert.

Answer: coconut

All of those ingredients would be good, but the coconut is what makes it *magic*!

Answer: carrot cake

Vegetables often show up in dessert recipes. Those like carrots, sweet potatoes, and zucchini are the top choices. I even have a green tomato chocolate cake recipe.
4. Hey, it's summertime, and I've assembled all the ingredients for another delicious dessert. The things I will need include sugar, cream, and rock salt. There may be some elbow grease involved as well! What am I going to make?

Answer: ice cream

Now, sugar cream pie does sound delicious, but I've never made it with rock salt. And when it comes to elbow grease, only homemade ice cream uses a healthy dose of it. Crank those churns!
5. Next I'm going to layer pudding (or custard), brownie or cake chunks, whipped cream, and maybe raspberries or strawberries. I may also add some sherry or rum if it's for adults. I'll need a special glass bowl to really show off those layers, too. What am I making now?

Answer: trifle

The history of the trifle goes back to the 1500s and has its roots in British cooking. History dictates that the cake chunks should be dried or toasted if using sherry or rum, to keep them from dissolving. Broken up cookies can be added, too.
6. This one is hands-down my all time favorite cookie. Ingredients include butter, sugar, flour, and of course, "morsels". Name it!

Answer: chocolate chip cookies

Toll House Inn owner Ruth Wakefield invented these cookies over 70 years ago. They remain the favorite in the US still today.
7. This cake is very light and spongy, and is baked in a special cake pan. The interesting thing about this cake is that there are no egg yolks in the recipe. What cake am I talking about?

Answer: angel food cake

Angel food cake first appeared in American cookbooks in the late 1800s, possibly a contribution of the Pennsylvania Dutch. One theory of its invention is that it was a great way to use up leftover egg whites. I just like it because it's yummy!
8. This old-fashioned cookie is a favorite of mine at Christmas time. It only has a few ingredients, the main ones being egg whites and coconut. What do you call this cookie?

Answer: coconut macaroons

Usually macaroons are made with either coconut or almond paste. In fact, the name "macaroon" comes from the Italian word for paste, "maccarone". Coconut macaroons are reported to be an American invention. I like to add a maraschino cherry half to the tops of mine.
9. Guess what I'm making next. I have flour, salt, shortening and ice water for part of it, and I'm going to stew a squash with some spices and bake the whole thing. What in the world am I making?

Answer: pumpkin pie

Pumpkins are indeed a member of the squash family. Luckily for the Pilgrims, the Native Americans showed them how to grow and cook these vitamin-rich beauties, and the pumpkin pie evolved from that time. And don't forget the whipped cream!

Answer: peanut butter

Historians believe that the Incas were the first people to make a paste-like substance out of peanuts. However, it was 19th century scientist G.W. Carver who tirelessly researched the peanut and its uses, and made it the popular food it is today.
