Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the grape used for Chablis?

Answer: Chardonnay

"Chablis" became synonymous with cheap white jug wine in the 70's and
even the 80's but is actually one of the most unique and well
respected regions in Burgundy.
2. What is the main grape used to make Chianti?

Answer: Sangiovese

Chianti producers also typically use Canaiolo and Malvasia (believe
it or not a white grape) in Chianti blends.
3. What is the grape used to make Rioja?

Answer: Tempranillo

Tempranillo is also known as Tinta Roriz and Tinta Aragonez in
Portugal which are grapes used in the production of Port.
4. What grape is used for both Barolo and Barbaresco production?

Answer: Nebbiolo

While Dolcetto is the most widely grown, these two Nebbiolo based wines are referred to as the King (Barolo) and Queen (Barbaresco) of the Piedmont region.
5. What grape is used in Blanc de Blancs champagne?

Answer: Chardonnay

The Champagne region uses three grapes: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and
Pinot Meunier. Blanc de Blancs use only Chardonnay, Blancs de Noirs
use only Pinot Noir. Rose champagnes tend to be predominantly made
from Pinot Noir as well.
6. What is the red varietal considered to be the grape that will make Sicily's reputation in the wine world?

Answer: Nero d'Avola

In the past decade or so, Sicily has emerged as a region for well-made
affordable wines. While the majority of the island's wines are
white, the wines based on Nero d'Avola, (also called Calabrese,) are
showing potential for great structure and ageing.
7. What is the main grape used in Sancerre? (White grape)

Answer: Sauvignon Blanc

While there is red Sancerre, it represents less than 15% of the
production. This Loire region, along with Pouilly-Fume, has some of
the best examples of great Sauvignon Blanc.
8. What is the more commonly known name of Morellino di Scansano?

Answer: Sangiovese

While grape names often change from country to country, (for example,
Syrah and Shiraz,) Italy is notorious for naming grapes after the
region in which they are grown. Morellino di Scansano is also the
same clone (Sangiovese Grosso) used in the Brunello di Montalcino
region where it is called Brunello!
9. What is the grape used to make Cahors?

Answer: Malbec

While Malbec is still sometimes used in Bordeaux blends, there are
only two regions in the world that make wines where it is the
predominant grape, the French region of Cahors and in Argentina, where
it is the third most widely planted grape.
10. What grape is used in making Condrieu?

Answer: Viognier

A tiny region - only 240 acres - of the Cote Rotie, (also a small part of the Rhone region of France,) Condrieu is one of the best examples of wine made from the Viognier grape.
11. What is the only grape used in the production of red wines from the Hermitages region?

Answer: Syrah

While all of the above grapes are used throughout the Rhone region
of France, the highly specilized wines from the 330 acre Hermitages
appelation only use Syrah.
12. What grape is used to produce Gavi di Gavi, an italian white wine?

Answer: Cortese

Gavi is the most expensive, though not necessarily considered the
highest quality, white wine produced in Italy. It is produced in
the Piedmont region.
13. What was the grape used to produce the wine referred to, innaccurately, as "Napa Gamay."

Answer: Valdigue

Both Gamay and Valdigiue can make light, fruity red wines. Gamay,
however, is capable of a lot more depth. The "Napa Gamay" label all
but disappeared in the last decade and is expected to be officially
restricted on labels.
14. If not labeled as PX or Pedro Ximenez, a sherry is made from what grape?

Answer: Palomino Fino

While the Pedro Ximenez grape is considered to produced slightly
more "serious" sherries, the Palomino grape is still more commonly
used because it is easier to grow.
15. What grape is used in the Beaujolais region?

Answer: Gamay

Though Beaujolais' reputation has been damaged by the popularity of
"Beaujolais Nouveau" released every third Thursday in November, Cru
Beaujolais is actually capable of great structure and ageing.
