Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The original incarnation of 'The Settlers of Catan,' as it is known in English-speaking countries, was first revealed to the world as 'Die Siedler von Catan' in Germany in 1995. What was the first variant/expansion of the game, released in 1996?

Answer: The Settlers of Catan Card Game

The 'Settlers of Catan Card Game' - later renamed to simply 'Catan Card Game' is a two-player variant on the game that uses many aspects similar to the board game, only without a board. Each player constructs a principality, which can be expanded with more towns and cities, complete with building expansions, military units, and trading fleets.

Seven expansions have been created so far to add variety to the base game: Knights and Merchants; Science and Progress; Wizards and Dragons; Barbarians and Traders; Politics and Intrigue; Trade and Change; Gold and Pirates; and Artisans and Benefactors.
2. In the year 1998, a scenario pack was released that required parts of the basic Settlers of Catan game to play, but otherwise was a stand-alone game. It was called 'Historical Scenarios I: ____________________.'

Answer: Alexander and Cheops

'Historical Scenarios I: Alexander and Cheops' (1998) allowed for two different scenarios, as its title suggests. You could conquer as Alexander, or build the pyramids as Cheops.

'Historical Scenarios II: Troy and the Great Wall' (2001) offered the same dichotomy of scenario choices. You could recreate the battle against Troy, or build the Great Wall of China.

The other two options given were figments of my imagination.
3. A number of licensed adaptations of the basic 'Settlers of Catan' game have been produced by different companies, using the same basic premise of gameplay, but altered for the theme presented. Which of these is NOT a real adaptation?

Answer: The Druids of Catan

'The Waters of Life' (1997) was produced for and distributed by the Scottish Distillery Glen Gant. It is set in the Scottish Highlands, and uses stills and distilleries in place of settlements and cities, and the English in place of the Robber.

'The Settlers of Canaan' (2002) is done in an Old Testament theme, where you can choose to be one of four of the 12 Tribes of Israel. It was released by Cactus Game Design.

'The Settlers of Zarahemla' (2003) was released by Inspiration Games, and it follows themes from the Book of Mormon.
4. This science-fiction spin-off of Catan was released in 1999, along with a 5/6 player expansion included in 2001.

Answer: Starfarers of Catan

'Starfarers of Catan' is set in the distant future. Instead of building roads, one moves colony ships to plant colonies on new planets, and trade ships to establish trade routes with alien species. A two-player variant of the game has also been published, titled 'Starship Catan.'
5. A couple of stand-alone board games using the Catan theme and similar gameplay basics have been published under the 'Catan Adventures' line. Players take on the role of individual colonist on the island of Catan. The first of these two games, released in 2004, is entitled 'Candamir: The First Settlers.' The second, released in 2006, is called '__________: The First City.'

Answer: Elasund

In Candamir: The First Settlers, players are individual settlers who must hunt and gather to build their first settlement on the island of Catan.

Elasund: The First City devotes itself to the construction within the city, with consideration given to civic vs church affiliations, real estate pricing, and eminent domain.
6. Another thematic line of stand-alone games within the Catan universe is called 'Catan Histories.' There are two games within this line so far. One is called 'Settlers of the Stone Age,' (2002) and the other is called:

Answer: Struggle for Rome

The 'Catan Histories' line didn't actually exist as such until 'Struggle for Rome' was introduced in 2006. 'Settlers of the Stone Age' was retroactively included at that time.

'Struggle for Rome' takes place at the time of the Fall of the Roman Empire. A free printable expansion can be downloaded - 'Struggle for Rome: Terror of the Legions.'

2010 has seen a new name in this line - 'Settlers of America Trails to Rails.'
7. 'Catan Geographies' is a new (2008) line in the Catan series of games. Appropriately, Klaus Teuber chose this country to be the subject of the game.

Answer: Germany

The game was produced to celebrate Germany's 60th anniversary (1949), and the 20th years since reunification (1990). Its basics are similar to the regular Catan game, but here you are settling Germany, and must develop landmarks (12 historical German landmarks) while developing your principality.

It will be interesting to see what other countries Teuber will choose to be part of this series.
8. 'The Settlers of Catan' line of games also includes a Yahtzee-like game called 'Catan Dice Game.'

Answer: True

The 'Catan Dice Game' has six dice with the five basic Catan resources - lumber, grain, ore, brick & wool), as well as gold. You have to follow a path on the accompanying sheet of paper (with pencil), and can make choices to build settlements or cities, or to purchase knights (which can be used as wild cards to change a die's shown resource).
9. There is a variant of 'Settlers of Catan' geared towards persons of a much younger persuasion. This game, for children aged 4+, is entitled:

Answer: The Kids of Catan

The game consists of a turntable board where each player has their own character pulling a wagon. Depending on where the wagon stops, every player can collect one of three different resources. When the wagon is full, the kids can trade the resources in for a building in the town.

There are 12 red-roofed buildings (easily divisible for 2, 3, or 4 players), and the city hall. The first player to build all their buildings, AND the city hall wins.
10. In 2009, Klaus Teuber revamped the visual design of the basic game of 'Settlers of Catan,' including it's primary expansions (Seafarers, Cities and Knights, and Traders & Barbarians). What edition of the game was this new release?

Answer: 4th

The new edition came with a different border than the 3rd edition, and purchasers of 'Seafarers of Catan' found that combinations of the two editions were problematic. An adapter kit had to be made available to make them compatible.
