The Settlers of Catan Trivia Questions

1. The first scenario in "Explorers & Pirates" is all about explorers. What is it called?

From Quiz
Catan: Explorers & Pirates

Answer: Land Ho!

While in the original "Settlers of Catan" you can expand by simply building roads and settlements and upgrading settlements to cities, the 'Land Ho!' scenario of "Explorers & Pirates" introduces a variation. You begin on a main island with a settlement and a harbor settlement. A harbor settlement costs two grain and two ore to upgrade to (from a coastal settlement), but continues to only earn one resource (unlike a city). Harbor settlements are important for the exploration of the ocean (which has 16 undiscovered tiles in two regions) as only they can produce ships for exploration, and it is only from harbor settlements that settlers may depart the main island. A ship costs one lumber and one wool to build, while a settler costs the same as a settlement (one each of lumber, brick, grain and wool). Once a ship carries a settler to a new location, the deposited settler turns into a settlement, and normal expansion (roads, etc.) may continue from that settlement. Victory is achieved in the 'Land Ho!' scenario once you have accumulated eight victory points (VPs).

2. In the 'The Fishermen of Catan' scenario, a special lake hex is added to the game board. Which type of tile from the board does it replace (according to the rules)?

From Quiz Catan: Traders & Barbarians

Answer: The desert terrain hex

The normal "Settlers of Catan" game board includes four each of the pasture, forest, and fields terrain hexes, three each of the mountains and hills terrain hexes, and just the one desert terrain hex. Rather than alter the number of terrains that produce resources in the game, the desert terrain hex (which produces nothing) is removed from the board to make room for the lake hex. The lake hex will produce fish on rolls of two, three, eleven and twelve, while an additional six wedge tiles are placed on the coast around the island, producing fish on rolls of four, five, six, eight, nine, and ten, respectively.

3. How many victory points do you need to win a game of Catan?

From Quiz Settlers of Catan Basics

Answer: 10

In order to win a standard game of Catan you must earn 10 victory points. If you like shorter games you might change the amount of points you need to win.

4. The original incarnation of 'The Settlers of Catan,' as it is known in English-speaking countries, was first revealed to the world as 'Die Siedler von Catan' in Germany in 1995. What was the first variant/expansion of the game, released in 1996?

From Quiz Settlers of Catan Variants

Answer: The Settlers of Catan Card Game

The 'Settlers of Catan Card Game' - later renamed to simply 'Catan Card Game' is a two-player variant on the game that uses many aspects similar to the board game, only without a board. Each player constructs a principality, which can be expanded with more towns and cities, complete with building expansions, military units, and trading fleets. Seven expansions have been created so far to add variety to the base game: Knights and Merchants; Science and Progress; Wizards and Dragons; Barbarians and Traders; Politics and Intrigue; Trade and Change; Gold and Pirates; and Artisans and Benefactors.

5. How many victory points are needed to win the game?

From Quiz Settlers of Catan

Answer: 10

In contrast, it takes victory 13 points to win the "Cities & Knights of Catan" expansion game.

6. Excluding the desert hex, how many land hexagonal tiles are in the playing surface?

From Quiz The Settlers of Catan

Answer: 18

18 total tiles consisting of 4 sheep (pasture), 4 wood, 4 wheat, 3 brick and 3 ore.

7. A further expansion pack to increase the number of players to five or six is also available that includes pieces for two more players. What are the two colours that come with the '5/6 Player' expansion?

From Quiz Catan: Seafarers

Answer: Brown and green

The base game of "Catan" comes with the colours blue, orange, red and white for different players. This extends to the "Seafarers" expansion. For both the base game and the expansion, the 5/6 Player expansion packs come with brown and green player pieces. This pattern, of course, extends to all the other expansions ("Cities & Knights", "Traders & Barbarians", and "Explorers & Pirates") as well.

8. Among the fish that you can catch in 'The Fishermen of Catan' scenario is also an old boot. What effect does the old boot have on the player that possesses it?

From Quiz Catan: Traders & Barbarians

Answer: It increases the number of points he or she needs to win the game by one.

If playing a game that only goes to ten points (such as the base "Settlers of Catan" game), then whoever holds the old boot cannot win until be or she has earned eleven points. You are only required to keep the old boot in your possession if you are in the lead, though. If you are NOT in the lead, you may pass the old boot on to any other player with the same or more victory points than you. What is the point of the fish, you ask? You can trade two fish in to move the robber off the board, three fish will let you steal a resource from another player, with four you can get a free resource from the bank, five gets you a free road, and with seven you can draw a free development card.

9. Hypothetically, how many roads can be built around a single field hex tile?

From Quiz "Settlers of Catan" Basics

Answer: Six

All of the tiles on the map are hexagons and, technically, roads could encircle an entire segment. In order for this to happen, however, it's likely that the the same colour will be around the entire section since enemy roads can not pass through an opponent's settlement or city. At the start of the game, you need to place down two settlements and two roads; settlements must be placed at the corner (or at multiple corners) of a hex tile. There must be at least two roads between separate settlements or cities.

10. To 'hire' a knight, one needs to expend one resource each of ore and wool. Which resource is needed to activate the knight?

From Quiz Catan: Cities & Knights

Answer: Grain

It costs the same to hire a knight (ore and wool) as it does to upgrade a knight. Your first purchase is always a basic knight (although you CAN pay double to upgrade to a strong knight right away). Mighty knights cannot be upgraded to until certain city improvements have been made. The knight tokens have two faces - on one side the knight is depicted in black and white (inactive) while on the other it is in colour (activated).

11. In the year 1998, a scenario pack was released that required parts of the basic Settlers of Catan game to play, but otherwise was a stand-alone game. It was called 'Historical Scenarios I: ____________________.'

From Quiz Settlers of Catan Variants

Answer: Alexander and Cheops

'Historical Scenarios I: Alexander and Cheops' (1998) allowed for two different scenarios, as its title suggests. You could conquer as Alexander, or build the pyramids as Cheops. 'Historical Scenarios II: Troy and the Great Wall' (2001) offered the same dichotomy of scenario choices. You could recreate the battle against Troy, or build the Great Wall of China. The other two options given were figments of my imagination.

12. The new player pieces in "Catan: Seafarers" are ships, and each player has a supply of fifteen of them. What is the production cost to 'build' a ship?

From Quiz Catan: Seafarers

Answer: One lumber, one wool

Essentially, the concept behind the purchase cost is lumber for the hull of the ship and wool to make the sails. It is possible to play a game of "Seafarers" without ever building a ship, but if you don't bother with that aspect of the expansion, then you might as well just play the base game. Ships in the game do not act like real, individual ships that can move and sail around, but rather they represent 'trade routes', and are used much like the road pieces on land.

13. Scenario 2 is called 'Pirate Lairs'. How many pirate lairs are there in the scenario (3-4 player)?

From Quiz Catan: Explorers & Pirates

Answer: Six

In the 'Pirate Lairs' scenario, the number of undiscovered tiles is increased to 22, adding in three pirate lair (gold field) hex tiles to each region (the Northern and Southern Unexplored Areas). When a gold field hex is discovered, a (round) pirate lair tile is placed on it, upside down. To clear out the pirates, players must transport 'crew' (a ship can carry up to two at a time) to the gold field until there are three crew on the tile (from any players). Each player who participated in the 'conquest' of the pirate lair receives two gold coins, and from that point on, it is possible to build settlements and roads on the hex, and earn two gold every time the number rolls (per settlement). Incidentally, a crew piece costs one ore and one wool. To win the 'Pirate Lairs' scenario, a player must achieve 12 VPs.

14. "The Rivers of Catan" brings two rivers down from the mountain and across the island of Catan. What new pieces come with this game expansion that are only for this scenario?

From Quiz Catan: Traders & Barbarians

Answer: Bridges

With rivers crossing the land, it is no longer possible for a player to only use roads to expand (unless they choose not to cross one of the rivers). Each player receives three bridges in the same colour as their roads, settlements and cities, and to build one costs two brick (clay) and one lumber (wood).

15. The number 4 tile is on top of a forest hex tile and you don't have a settlement adjacent to it. How many lumber Resource Cards do you pick up when that number is rolled?

From Quiz "Settlers of Catan" Basics

Answer: None

You only pick up Resource Cards if you have a settlement (or city) adjacent to a hex tile where its number was just rolled. Thus, if your settlement is built at the corner of a forest hex tile with the number 4 on top and someone rolls a 4, you can pick up one lumber card. These can stack if you have multiple settlements or cities around one tile. Some players find it more tactical to bunch their settlements up around the same resources for the sake of trading while others try to get a spread of different resources at their disposal.

16. How do you build cities?

From Quiz Settlers of Catan Basics

Answer: Expand a Settlement

Cities are the most effective way to earn points because they double how many resources you earn from adjacent areas and they are worth two points.

17. The regular Settlers of Catan game can only be played by 3 or 4 people. One of the variants in Traders & Barbarians allows the basic game to be played by a new number of people. Which is it?

From Quiz Traders & Barbarians of Catan

Answer: 2

Before this version, a couple who wanted to play had to either make up their own rules or play the card game.

18. In order to build ships, what MUST a player have?

From Quiz Catan: Seafarers

Answer: A settlement or city on the coast

When placing settlements at the beginning of the base game of "Catan", you also place a road piece. In "Seafarers", you get the option of either a road piece or a ship, but you can only build a ship at a settlement that is on the coast of an island.

19. When it is my turn, I roll the dice and decide I wish to trade some of my resource cards. I wish to trade a brick and a wool in exchange for an ore. What does this reveal about the type of trade I am doing?

From Quiz Family Game Night: Settlers of Catan

Answer: It is a domestic trade (i.e. a trade with another player)

Trading can be done in one of three ways: First, there is a domestic trade where a player trades with another player. The rule for this type of trade is that there must be an exchange of resources and the trade cannot be of similar resources. In other words, I can't offer a wool resource to someone and expect nothing in return. I also can't trade multiple wools for a single wool (or any number of wools). This is the type of trade being described in the question. Second, there is a maritime trade. If a player has a settlement on a harbor with a resource on it, then that person may trade two identical resources cards that match the resource on the harbor and get one resource card of the player's choice. If there is a question mark instead of a harbor, then a player may trade three identical resource cards (any kind will do) and get one resource card of the player's choice. Third, there is a type of trade where a player can exchange four identical resource cards (any kind will do) and get one resource card of the player's choice. This can be done at any time during a person's turn. No other requirements are necessary. In my game, I am successful in trading with Madison. She gives me ore and I give her a brick and a wool.

20. The number 3 is on top of a brick-giving hill hex tile and you have a city adjacent to it. How many brick Resource Cards do you pick up when that number is rolled?

From Quiz "Settlers of Catan" Basics

Answer: Two

While a settlement gives one Resource Card should its number be rolled, a city gives the player two Resource Cards. Cities are worth more Victory Points (settlements are worth 1 and cities are worth 2) and, because of their stronger sway with resources, they tend to be smart upgrades should you have enough to create them. Bricks are used to build both roads and settlements, the basic building blocks of any player's empire.

21. Which resources do you need to build a road?

From Quiz Settlers of Catan Basics

Answer: brick and wood

Roads must be built if you want to build settlements because settlements must be two spaces apart. Plus, by building several road segments, you could earn two points from the "longest road" card.

22. This science-fiction spin-off of Catan was released in 1999, along with a 5/6 player expansion included in 2001.

From Quiz Settlers of Catan Variants

Answer: Starfarers of Catan

'Starfarers of Catan' is set in the distant future. Instead of building roads, one moves colony ships to plant colonies on new planets, and trade ships to establish trade routes with alien species. A two-player variant of the game has also been published, titled 'Starship Catan.'

23. How many different colors of pieces do you need to play the new variant in Traders & Barbarians that allows you to adapt the basic Settlers game for a new number of people?

From Quiz Traders & Barbarians of Catan

Answer: 4

In addition to the two players, there are two neutral parties. Whenever a road or a settlement is built by one of the players, they place a road or (if possible) a settlement for one of the neutral parties. The neutral parties can even get the Longest Road prize!

24. Who was the original designer of Settlers of Catan?

From Quiz Settlers of Catan

Answer: Klaus Teuber

You can visit his website at http://www.klausteuber.de/de/klaus.html.

25. Player A builds a road making 5 continuous road segments and is therefore given the longest road card. Player B follows by creating a 5 continuous segment road. Who gets the longest road card now?

From Quiz The Settlers of Catan

Answer: Player A

Player A will retain the card until someone builds a continuous road that is at least 1 segment longer than his.

26. Lets talk about some of the resources for a minute. In addition to wood, what other resource do you need to build a road?

From Quiz Catan Games

Answer: Clay & Brick & Clay/brick

Clay and wood will enable you to build roads. Not only will having the longest road gain you points, but by branching out you can build more settlements and cities.

27. In 'Fish for Catan' (scenario 3), points can be earned for catching fish from various 'fish hauls' (a special hex tile) in the ocean. How many fish hauls are used in the scenario (3-4 player)?

From Quiz Catan: Explorers & Pirates

Answer: Five

There are actually six fish haul tiles available, numbered 1 to 6, but only five of them are used. The 'Fish for Catan' scenario continues to use the pirate lairs from scenario 2, also reducing them to five. Thus, the five fish haul tiles replace the four water hexes and one pirate lair, keeping the total number of undiscovered tiles at 22.

28. Madison has six resource cards and two development cards. Spencer has nine resource cards and no development cards. I have three resource cards and one development card. Madison takes her turn and she rolls a seven. Does she lose any cards?

From Quiz Family Game Night: Settlers of Catan

Answer: No--she has less than seven resource cards

If a person rolls a seven, then no resource cards are given. Instead, the robber must be moved from his current spot to a different spot. Everyone, whether that person rolls the dice or not, must lose half the resource cards (rounded down) if that player has more than seven resource cards. Madison has only six resource cards, and since that it less than seven, she loses no cards. Spencer has nine resource cards, and therefore must give up four resource cards of his choosing. I have three resource cards, and thus get to keep all my resource cards.

29. In "The Caravans" scenario, what new hex replaces the desert terrain hex?

From Quiz Catan: Traders & Barbarians

Answer: An oasis

The oasis terrain hex must be placed at the centre of the game board (unlike the desert terrain hex, which can be placed anywhere). It is from this hex that the caravans will begin (arrows point to three of the corners on the hex).

30. To build a city, you need (exactly) two cards of what resource?

From Quiz "Settlers of Catan" Basics

Answer: Grain

A city costs two grain Resource Cards and three ore Resource Cards and you must upgrade from an existing settlement. Settlements are a bit trickier to create since you need one wool card, one grain card, a lumber card, and a brick card. Ore is only necessary for city building and for purchasing Progress Cards should you opt to use them. They do come in handy for added Victory Points and bonuses, so it pays to save up. Each player gets a maximum of four cities.
