Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the 'The Fishermen of Catan' scenario, a special lake hex is added to the game board. Which type of tile from the board does it replace (according to the rules)?

Answer: The desert terrain hex

The normal "Settlers of Catan" game board includes four each of the pasture, forest, and fields terrain hexes, three each of the mountains and hills terrain hexes, and just the one desert terrain hex. Rather than alter the number of terrains that produce resources in the game, the desert terrain hex (which produces nothing) is removed from the board to make room for the lake hex.

The lake hex will produce fish on rolls of two, three, eleven and twelve, while an additional six wedge tiles are placed on the coast around the island, producing fish on rolls of four, five, six, eight, nine, and ten, respectively.
2. Among the fish that you can catch in 'The Fishermen of Catan' scenario is also an old boot. What effect does the old boot have on the player that possesses it?

Answer: It increases the number of points he or she needs to win the game by one.

If playing a game that only goes to ten points (such as the base "Settlers of Catan" game), then whoever holds the old boot cannot win until be or she has earned eleven points. You are only required to keep the old boot in your possession if you are in the lead, though. If you are NOT in the lead, you may pass the old boot on to any other player with the same or more victory points than you.

What is the point of the fish, you ask? You can trade two fish in to move the robber off the board, three fish will let you steal a resource from another player, with four you can get a free resource from the bank, five gets you a free road, and with seven you can draw a free development card.
3. "The Rivers of Catan" brings two rivers down from the mountain and across the island of Catan. What new pieces come with this game expansion that are only for this scenario?

Answer: Bridges

With rivers crossing the land, it is no longer possible for a player to only use roads to expand (unless they choose not to cross one of the rivers). Each player receives three bridges in the same colour as their roads, settlements and cities, and to build one costs two brick (clay) and one lumber (wood).
4. Building any pieces (roads, settlements, etc.) along the river terrain hexes earns gold for players in "The Rivers of Catan" scenario. At any point in the game, the player with the most gold earns the status of 'Wealthiest Settler' and a bonus victory point. What happens if you have the least amount of gold and become a 'Poor Settler'?

Answer: You lose two victory points

Possession of the 'Wealthiest Settler" card can change throughout the game, and a strategic player can acquire it at just the right time to potentially win the game. In order to earn the card, one must be alone with the most gold - the distinction cannot be shared. if more than one player has 'the most gold' then no one earns the bonus.

There are four "Poor Settler" cards in the game, since it is possible for more than one player to have the least amount of gold.
5. In "The Caravans" scenario, what new hex replaces the desert terrain hex?

Answer: An oasis

The oasis terrain hex must be placed at the centre of the game board (unlike the desert terrain hex, which can be placed anywhere). It is from this hex that the caravans will begin (arrows point to three of the corners on the hex).
6. The only new playing pieces (not counting the replacement hex) for "The Caravans" scenario are camels.

Answer: True

There are 22 gold-coloured camels available for "The Caravans" scenario, none of them owned by an individual player. A camel gets placed on the board (beginning at the oasis) whenever a new settlement is built, or whenever a settlement is upgraded to a city (by any player). WHERE a camel is placed is the question.

When a camel is to be placed, players may bid wool and grain (sheep and wheat) resources for the right to place the camel. The advantages that the camels bring to the game are as follows: every road built by a player where a camel is counts as two roads when determining the holder of 'The Longest Road' (two victory points); and if a player's settlement or city is bracketed by camels (the caravan path goes through it), then the settlement or city is worth an additional victory point.
7. The scenario "Barbarian Attack" involves barbarians landing on the shores of Catan, and the efforts of the players to drive off the barbarians with knights. What aspects of the basic "Settlers of Catan" game are NOT used in this scenario?

Answer: The robber and the 'Largest Army'

The attacking barbarians take the place of the robber, and the knights (new pieces, six per player) take the place of the 'Largest Army'. In regular play, there are soldiers cards in the development card deck that, when played, chase away the robber. Play three of them and you can earn two victory points for the 'Largest Army'.

The "Barbarian Attack" scenario, in addition to having actual knight pieces, also uses its own deck of development cards, with such cards as 'treason', 'intrigue', 'black knight', and 'knighthood'.
8. In the "Barbarian Attack" scenario when three barbarians occupy a terrain hex, it becomes a 'conquered hex' and no longer produces resources. Once that happens, can it be liberated by the players?

Answer: Yes

Three barbarians reach shore every time a player builds a settlement or upgrades a settlement into a city. The player who builds must roll the dice until three different numbers (apart from seven) have rolled, and a barbarian occupies each corresponding numbered terrain hex on the coast.

Players can purchase knights (through the development card deck) to battle the barbarian horde, working alone or with other players. If there are more knights surrounding an occupied terrain hex than there are barbarians, then the barbarians are captured (divided among the attacking players). If that hex was a 'conquered hex', the removal of the barbarians returns it to normal.

Every two barbarians captured by a player is worth one victory point.
9. The last of the scenarios in this expansion is called, appropriately enough, "Traders & Barbarians". The primary purpose of this game (apart from building and expanding) is to transport commodities back and forth across Catan (for the restoration of the castle). Which of these is not one of the new hexes added to this scenario?

Answer: Smithy hex

Each player begins with a wagon next to their city, which represents a baggage train. From there they can move it to the nearest of the new hexes to pick up their commodities.

At the glassworks hex, a player will either get a glass token (to be delivered to the castle hex) or a tools token (to be transported to the quarry hex).

At the quarry hex, one can either receive a marble token (that must be taken to the castle hex) or a sand token (which needs to be taken to the glassworks hex).

At the castle hex, players get either sand (for the glassworks) or tools (for the quarry).
10. There also happen to be barbarians in the "Traders & Barbarians" scenario... go figure. How many barbarians are there?

Answer: 3

There is one barbarian to match each destination point in the game (the castle, the quarry, and the glassworks). They are positioned on the roadways (hex edges) and affect the game in two ways: they act like the robber (when a seven is rolled they can be moved to an opposing player's road and a resource can be stolen from that player), and they act like highwaymen, waylaying the baggage trains. Normal movement for the wagons cost movement points - moving along a road costs one movement point, and across an edge with no road costs two. When trying to move past a barbarian on the path, it costs two extra movement points.

There is a possibility of avoiding barbarians through upgrading your baggage train, which allows for the chance to roll the dice to chase the barbarian away (the higher the upgrade, the better the odds for the dice roll).
