Shot Shot Trivia Quiz

I spent a fair amount of time in various bars and pubs when I was at Manchester University, so I thought I'd write a quiz about the student's favourite mini cocktail: the shooter.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A snakebite is a drink popular with heavy metal fans in Britain, and is made up of equal parts of lager, cider and which flavour cordial?

Answer: Blackcurrant

An old school Snakebite should contain a dash of blackcurrant cordial. Alternatively, it is possible to ask for a 'Snakebite and black'. The American version sometimes uses stout instead of lager. Various universities have different nicknames for the drink; Warwick University call it a Purple, the University of East Anglia call it a Snakey B, and the University of Loughborough call it a Nasty.

An urban legend claims that it is illegal to sell the drink in the UK. However, this is not true.
2. Which shooter, named after a rock band from Atlanta, Georgia, contains Grand Marnier, Irish cream and coffee liqueur?

Answer: B-52

Creator Peter Fich was a fan of the band, and named shooters after his favourite bands. The B-52 is a layered shot, with a coffee liqueur such as Kahlúa at the bottom, Irish cream in the middle, and Grand Marnier on the top (Cointreau or triple sec can be used instead). Variations include a B-51, which uses Frangelico hazelnut liqueur as the top layer; B-53, which substitutes Sambuca for Irish cream; and B-55 or B-52 Gunship, which substitutes absinthe for triple sec.

The shooter caught on amongst Arsenal fans during Nicklas Bendtner's time at the club, where he was nicknamed B-52 after wearing a number 52 shirt.
3. A Jaegerbomb involves a shot glass containing Jaegermeister being dropped into a pint of which drink?

Answer: Red Bull

Jaegermeister was, and is, one of my favourite drinks - it's a German liqueur containing a mixture of herbs, including aniseed, liquorice and ginger. In Germany, the Jaegerbomb is known as a 'fliegender Hirsch' (flying stag), while the Finnish version is an 'Akkuhapo' or 'battery acid' (Battery is a Finnish energy drink). The (untrue and dangerous) idea is that the caffeine in the Red Bull, or another energy drink of choice, counters the alcohol in the Jaegermeister.

A 'Jaeger train' is a sequence of Jaegerbombs being created by lining up pint glasses and balancing shot glasses on the rims, with the idea of creating a domino effect with the shot glasses.
4. Which spirit do the Mai Tai, the mojito and the pina colada have in common?

Answer: Rum

A Mai Tai is made with white and dark rum, orange Curaçao, orgeat syrup (a sweet syrup containing almonds, sugar and rose or orange flower water) and lime juice. It is traditionally garnished with pineapple, mint leaves and a slice of lime.

A mojito is a Cuban highball (a mixed drink with an alcoholic base drink and a larger amount of a non-alcoholic mixer). In this case, the base drink is white rum and the mixer is soda. It also contains lime juice, mint and sugar, and is garnished with mint leaves. Variations using other fruit juices such as raspberry also exist.

A pina colada - immortalised by the singer Rupert Holmes in 'Escape (The Pina Colada Song)' is made with white rum, coconut cream and pineapple juice, and garnished with a slice of pineapple and/or a maraschino cherry. It is the national drink of Puerto Rico; Pina Colada Day is celebrated there on 10th July. 'Piña colada' literally means 'strained pineapple'.
5. One would have to be either brave or mad to drink a Prairie Fire! Legend has it that this drink was invented as a punishment for drinkers who lost bar bets. What ingredient does it contain along with alcohol?

Answer: Hot sauce

Many varieties of Prairie Fire exist, but they all have one ingredient in common - hot sauce, Tabasco or otherwise. The original recipe contains 1 part whiskey to 4 drops of hot sauce, but other versions include Stout Prairie Fire (Everclear), Canadian Prairie Fire (Yukon Jack, a sweet Canadian whisky), and Caribbean Prairie Fire (rum). One particular nasty-sounding variant, Belgian Hell with Love from Russia, contains sprout juice as well as 26 drops of hot sauce, and vodka.
6. The official IBA recipe for a Kamikaze contains equal measures of triple sec, vodka and the juice of which fruit?

Answer: Lime

The IBA is the International Bartenders' Association, and they have an official sanctioned list of cocktails, one of which is the Kamikaze. The Kamikaze is a relatively simple drink that can either be served as a cocktail in a cocktail glass, or a shooter in a shot glass, and traditionally uses actual lime juice, as opposed to sour mix (a mixture of lemon and lime juice and sugar syrup).

It is thought to have been invented in 1976, and was one of the 'original' shooters.
7. If you're a fan of the English rock band Terrorvision, you might remember their song 'Tequila', with the chorus 'Tequila, it makes me happy/Con tequila, it feels fine'. A certain type of tequila shot gets its name not from its ingredients, but from how it's consumed. What is its name?

Answer: Tequila slammer

Tequila is specifically made with blue agave plants, and a tequila slammer is so called because the glass is slammed down on the table while the drinker holds their hand over the top, to make the drink foam. The traditional way to drink a tequila slammer is with salt and lemon and/or lime.

The drinker sprinkles salt on the back of their hand and licks it off, then downs the shot and bite the lime or lemon as a chaser. One Mexican variant, the Tequila Boom Boom, adds grenadine and 7-Up.
8. One cocktail has caused controversy in some places due to its name, which some people see as making light of terrorism. It involves a shot of whiskey and Irish cream being dropped into a pint glass of stout, usually Guinness. What cocktail is this?

Answer: Irish Car Bomb

The Irish Car Bomb traditionally uses all-Irish drinks; Bailey's Irish Cream, Jameson Irish Whiskey and Guinness. It also used to include Kahlúa, though not anymore; the version containing Kahlúa is called a Belfast Car Bomb. Some bars prefer the less contentious name of 'Irish Slammer' or 'Irish Bomb', as the 'car bomb' part carries connotations of car bombings during the Troubles in Northern Ireland.
9. South African players may know the answer to this. Which two liqueurs form the Springbokkie shooter?

Answer: Creme de menthe and Amarula

The Springbokkie gets its name from the Springboks, the South African national rugby union team (a springbok is a type of antelope). The Springboks traditionally play in green and gold, and the Springbokkie shooter is the same colour as their kit, with green crème de menthe and gold/brown Amarula. Amarula is a South African cream liqueur, made from the fruit of the marula tree; it has a sweet, caramel-like taste.

The ratio of Amarula to crème de menthe (or any other green peppermint liqueur) can vary, but usually it is one part Amarula to three parts crème de menthe.
10. How would you best describe the flavour of a Polar Bear cocktail?

Answer: Mint chocolate

A Polar Bear cocktail is also known as an After Eight or a Peppermint Paddy, due to its mint and chocolate flavour. It is made from crème de cacao and a peppermint liqueur such as peppermint schnapps or crème de menthe. One variation, known as Polar Bear in a Blizzard, contains white chocolate liqueur and also adds vodka.
