Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This is one of the most recognized trout fly pattern of all times. It has brown hackles with a white wing, green peacock body separated by a band of red floss and a golden pheasant tippet tail. What is this pattern?

Answer: Royal Coachman.

The royal coachman is an attractive pattern that represents no mayfly in general, many rainbow trout are fooled by this classic fly.
2. When mayflies hatch, they hatch in the millions. Trout will key in on these mayflies and eat only the ones that fit a pattern. If you were to fish these hatches, you will need to copy the insects the trout are eating. What is this called?

Answer: Matching the hatch

If brown flies with white wings are hatching, then a green pattern with red wings will not catch trout. Many people will make/buy trout flies in all colors and sizes ahead of time, this way they have them when the hatch does come.
3. Mayflies are not the only aquatic insect that trout eat, what other hatches do they key in on?

Answer: Caddis flies

They also eat leeches, fish, worms and other forms of bugs, but don't key in on these as well.
4. The Dark Hendrickson trout fly matches what sub-species of mayfly?

Answer: Ephemerella Subvaria.

Smaller trout will move to attack the floating duns. Keep watch for large trout feeding on station. Cast so that your fly drifts directly over them. The best imitations are comparaduns or the dark Hendrickson.
5. When trout flies are tied to match land insects (ants, grasshoppers, etc.), what are these patterns called?

Answer: Terrestrials.

Beetles, crickets, ants and grasshoppers head the list of these summer favorites. Most terrestrial patterns use deer hair to keep them on top of the water and looking like a helpless, easy meal for hungry trout.
6. Why are wet flies called, "wet flies"?

Answer: They are only fished below the surface of the water.

Most wet fly patterns are of the adult female, (sub-surface) stage of the mayfies life cycle. The female mayfly will return to the bottom of the river to lay her eggs, the caddis fly will just dip her tail into the water to deposit her eggs.
7. A mayfly pattern has two up-right wings, how are the wings of the caddis and stonefly fixed on the hook?

Answer: Laying flat on top of the body.

Caddis and stone flies range from small hooks (size 20) to the larger sizes (size 8), and are tied in both wet and dry fly styles.
8. March browns, gray fox, light cahill, quill gordon, blue dun and green drakes are all patterns of what?

Answer: Mayflies.

These can all be tied as dry fly, wet fly or nymphs (larva stage) in many hook sizes.
9. If you have a pattern of a mickey finn, golden darter, grizzly king, gray ghost, yellow matuka and maribou muddlers, what would you have?

Answer: Streamers.

These are all bait fish patterns, from shiners to game fish. Streamers are tied on extra long hooks to account for the growing sizes of the fingerlings.
10. This trout fly is nothing more than a small ball of orange or red yarn on a hook. What is this fly called?

Answer: Egg fly

The egg fly works well during spawning season. When other fish lay eggs, (salmon, steelhead, etc.) trout will eat the brightly colored eggs that drift along the bottom of the stream.
