Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You have never been to a gym before and are not really sure what to bring with you. What should you always bring when going to a gym?

Answer: Towel and a drink bottle

A towel is essential when visiting a gym because many gyms will not let you enter without a towel. This is because if you do not wipe the sweat of machines with your towel and someone else uses that machine, it can be very unhygienic. A drink bottle is needed to hydrate yourself especially if you are doing a cardiovascular workout because if you do not keep refreshing yourself with water, you are at risk of suffering dehydration.
2. You are preparing for your visit to the gym and look down at your drink bottle because you are not sure what you should fill it up with. Which of these would be the best drink to take to the gym when doing a workout?

Answer: Water

Water is definitely the most suitable drink to bring when visiting a gym because it is essential for hydrating your body and giving yourself nutrients. Water also helps you to lose weight because it flushes down unwanted materials in the body and also reduces hunger which makes you eat less.

Milk is a great recovery drink to have following exercise because it has calcium which strengthens bones but will not hydrate your body and muscles like water does.

Bringing a soft drink or a coffee is a horrible idea because although the drinks have high sugar levels which give you energy, the energy does not last and will mean that you will burn out near the end of your workout. These drinks also do not hydrate your body as well as water does.
3. You visit the gym and pay with your recently issued one month trial gym membership card. You start doing some exercises and then it dawns upon you that you do not have a set workout. Which of these would NOT be the smartest thing to do?

Answer: Use any random machine and do the heaviest weight possible to impress everyone

Using a random machine and to lift the heaviest weight possible to impress everyone would definitely be the dumbest and most immature thing to do. Using the heaviest weight possible could seriously damage your body especially if you are still growing because your muscles are not fully developed. All of the other options would be sensible things to do.
4. You are now looking to plan a workout for your visits to the gym but you are not sure what type of workout you should do. Who is always the first person you should consult when trying something new to do with your body?

Answer: A doctor

When looking to try something new with your body such as training for a marathon or planning a gym workout, you should always consult your doctor or GP first because they know the most about you and will be able to tell you if you have any problems stopping you from participating in a certain type of physical activity. For example a problem such as high blood pressure could stop you from doing strenuous amounts of running at a time. Because a doctor knows the most about your body except for yourself, they should always be the first person to talk to when trying something new with your body.

If you are looking to make a set workout, talk to your doctor at first to see if he has any advice for you. After consulting the doctor I would then talk to a gym instructor and ask for advice on what results you are trying to achieve.
5. The doctor has given you the thumbs up about starting a gym workout plan but he says that a gym instructor or physio would be able to give you the best advice. Out of curiosity he asks you, "What is the goal you are trying to achieve by visiting the gym?" You reply, "I would like to lose weight". What would be the ideal method for losing weight?

Answer: A cardiovascular program mixed with some light strength work combined with healthy eating

A cardiovascular program mixed with some light strength work combined with healthy eating would definitely be the best method for losing weight because cardiovascular fitness such as running and swimming are great for your heart and burn off unwanted calories.

The light strength program is great for toning your body because the more muscle you have, the faster the fat will burn. Healthy eating is also very important because without nutrition you will not get very far. Healthy eating includes eating lots of salads and vegetables, drinking plenty of water and preventing pigging out as much as possible.
6. You organize a session with your physio on Sunday. You and he sit down and plan a workout session. He says that on Mondays you should do 45 minutes to an hour of outdoor jogging. When would be the ideal time to do this exercise (assuming you run on footpaths, not open roads)?

Answer: In the morning before school or work

In the morning before school or work is an ideal time to do the exercise because it is a great way to wake yourself up and it is usually not too hot. This means that you will have a more pleasant time completing your exercise. At midnight is unsafe especially if you are going outdoors because you are at great risk of being mugged or raped. Doing the exercise five minutes after you just ate lunch means that your food has not fully digested and can cause you considerable pain during your exercise. Cutting your sleeping pattern into halves is also a bad idea because it means you will not get a good night sleep because your sleep has been interrupted. Most of the time it is more beneficial to get a full sleep than cutting it into halves.
7. On Tuesday, you wake up and your knees are very sore and it is causing you an extreme amount of pain to put pressure on them. What could be the reason for this pain?

Answer: All of these

All of these reasons could have been what is causing the extreme pain in your knees. First of all, running on the concrete is a very common cause of pain in your hips and below. Concrete is a much harder surface than grass or sand and therefore means that your legs hit the ground with a lot more force. To combat this, try running on the grass rather than on the concrete.

Secondly, having old sport shoes could definitely be a cause for this pain because over time runners begin to break down and lose their shock absorption which means that the padding in the sole of the shoe is becoming less and less effective. This means that when you run there is not much support for the knees and hips and this could cause very serious injuries if you keep running with the shoes.

Finally, not stretching or warming up before a jog is not very smart and means that your muscles will not be ready for the exercise. You need to do some light jogging to warm your muscles up, followed by some stretching to get your muscles loose. Doing this before a run will definitely give you a better and more relaxed run.

If you have experienced this type of pain, the best thing to do would be to stretch regularly and rest until the pain goes away because continuing to exercise with this pain could lead to a much more serious problem.
8. You have rested for a week and the pain in your knees has disappeared. It is now Wednesday and your program says that today you should do a hard strength session in the gym. He has given you a list of exercises to do, many of which target your core. You think to yourself, "Why on earth do I need strong core muscles?" What are the main benefits of possessing strong core muscles?

Answer: It improves posture, burns off fat and will do a lot for your self confidence

Having a strong core is very important in being a healthy person especially if you are an active sportsman. Having a strong core burns off fat which helps you lose weight, improves your posture significantly and makes you feel a lot better about your body which is great for mental health.
9. On Thursday you have a rest day to rest your body from the hard strength session. On Friday it says to do thirty minutes of hard running but you are still feeling really sore from the strength session on Wednesday. What would be the best thing to do?

Answer: Do thirty minutes of light jogging or walking

There is nothing wrong with feeling sore especially if you have only just started a workout plan. Doing thirty of minutes of light exercise is still better than nothing and in many cases, can help to relieve some of the soreness in your legs because you are moving and stretching them out while you walk or jog. If you continued with the hard running session that could potentially injure yourself because of the soreness from Wednesday. Having a day off could be good for relieving your soreness but doing a little bit of exercise is always better than doing nothing so thirty minutes of light jogging or walking would be the best option.
10. There is an attached sheet on your fitness program which contain yoga exercises which are to be done on Saturday and Sunday is a rest day. What is the importance of including some form of yoga in a fitness program?

Answer: To tone and relax muscles and to improve flexibility

Bringing yoga into a fitness program possesses many benefits. Yoga helps to relax the muscles and improves flexibility significantly. Your balance and posture will also improve and you will become stronger over time. Yoga is not used as a strength session but more of an all round body workout because it helps the mind, heart, organs and all of the muscles and tendons do their jobs better.
