Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Butterfinger candy bars came out in 1923 for the first time. What kind of candy bars are they?

Answer: They're chocolate-covered with a crunchy peanut-butter and caramel-flavored center.

The Curtis Candy Company of Chicago came up with the idea for Butterfinger bars, which are indeed chocolate covered with an orange-colored center that they describe as a flaky crispy peanut-butter caramel. The other descriptions are made up and don't fit Butterfingers at all.
2. The Curtis Candy Company held a contest to name the Butterfinger bar when they first launched it in 1923.

Answer: True

This was part of a publicity stunt to drum up interest in the candy bar. The expression "butter fingers" was used to refer to athletes (normally baseball players) who would drop the ball as if their fingers were covered in butter. It became generalized to refer to anyone who dropped anything or let it slip out of their hands.

The name is great for the candy bar because it does have a delectable buttery flavor.
3. The Curtis Candy Company, which owned Butterfinger and Baby Ruth, was part of the Standard Food Company, and later merged with National Biscuit Company, or Nabisco, in 1981. Nabisco then sold Butterfinger and Baby Ruth to another company in 1990. What company was that?

Answer: Nestlé

Nestlé has owned Butterfinger and Baby Ruth since 1990. They have branched off into related products for the Butterfinger brand and also spent a lot on advertizing and promotional efforts to make it seem more modern since that time.
4. Newer Butterfinger products introduced between 1990 and 2011 include all of the following EXCEPT...

Answer: Diabetic Butterfinger Bars

Until 2011, there hasn't yet been a sugar-free or diabetic-friendly version of Butterfinger. Maybe someday they will get around to making one. All of the other products listed have existed, though the name of Butterfinger BBs was changed to Butterfinger Mini Bites in 2009.
5. One of Nestle's advertising campaigns to promote Butterfinger involved a popular animated TV series featuring yellow characters, "The _______________."

Answer: Simpsons

Nestle's deal with "The Simpsons" lasted from 1990 to 2001, with the character of Bart launching many slogans for the candy bar. When the contract was terminated, the show made fun of the candy bar in one episode in which Bart's mother Marge tried to burn them, and they wouldn't burn. That's what I call sour grapes!

Nestle and "The Simpsons" seemed to have made their peace in 2009 when another Simpson-related ad for Butterfinger went on the air.
6. There was an animated spokesperson for Butterfinger for a number of years. All of the following slogans were used by the disrespectful teen cartoon icon to promote the candy bar EXCEPT...

Answer: "Don't have a cow. Have a Butterfinger!"

The spokescartoon was none other than Bart Simpson. Though Bart often encourages people not to have a cow, it was not part of the Butterfinger ad campaign. All of the other slogans were immortalized by Bart, however.
7. To cash in on the energy-drink craze, a version of the Butterfinger bar with an extra dose of caffeine came out in 2009. What was it called?

Answer: Butterfinger Buzz

This bar came out with a limited distribution and carried a warning label for pregnant women, children and other people who have strong reactions to caffeine. They shouldn't have messed with my Butterfinger!
8. In 2008, Nestle ran an April Fools' advertizing campaign changing the name of "Butterfinger" to "The Finger."

Answer: True

Who knows why they did this, but they did. The associated website for the spoof campaign said that market research had shown that no one liked the name of the candy bar and that it needed to change. All I know is that Butterfinger is Butterfinger!
9. In another marketing ploy to take advantage of the social networking craze, Nestle prompted the candy bar with a comedy website with videos, games and other activities, under the familiar but slightly modified slogan of "Nobody's going to lay a finger on my ________________."

Answer: Butterfinger

It seems there are a lot of people with a lot of time on their hands, because the site has many fans. I love Butterfinger candy bars, but I don't think I'd need to play games on the computer about it entitled "Butterfinger Orange Caverns of Doom" or "Butterfinger Expose the Thief" game. But maybe that's just me.
10. Butterfinger has not been without its scandals. The candy bar was withdrawn from the market in which European country due to its use of genetically modified corn-based ingredients?

Answer: Germany

This happened in 2003, and was the fruit of the efforts of the Green Party, which was against genetic modification of food given to children.
