Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Wanna slice of pizza? Which Italian city is credited with developing the style of pizza sold in New York City?

Answer: Naples

New York style pizza is derived from a recipe that originated in the Italian city of Naples. Neopolitan pizza is a round, thin-crusted pie covered in mozzarella cheese and tomato sauce made from tomatoes native to the Naples region. Lombardi's, a pizzeria located in Manhattan, New York City, has often been considered to be the first pizzeria established in America.

The restaurant claims to have been established by Gennaro Lombardi, a native of Naples, Italy in 1905. However, recent historical research has revealed that pizza may have been brought to the United States several years earlier.
2. Would you fancy a slice of red velvet cake? Which vegetables are sometimes used to provide natural food coloring when making red velvet cake?

Answer: beets

The red velvet cake is said to have been invented by Adams Extract, a company based in Texas that specializes in food coloring and other food additives. A red velvet cake uses a combination of cocoa powder, white vinegar and other ingredients to make the batter. Most of the time, red velvet cake's color comes from using artificial food coloring. During World War II, when the nation's food supply was being rationed, bakers began using beets (more specifically beetroot) as an alternative way to color the batter red. Today red velvet cake can be made using either method.
3. Jimmy Buffett might agree that a slice of which type of pie is better than sliced bread?

Answer: Key lime pie

Key lime pie is a type of dessert that originated in southern Florida, specifically the Florida Keys region. The Key lime itself is native to Southeast Asia. Spanish settlers brought the crop over to Florida where the fruit gained in popularity. American musician Jimmy Buffett has become an icon in the city of Key West, after he established a restaurant named after his hit song "Margaritaville" there in 1985. Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville and other areas across the United States celebrate National Key Lime Pie Day every year on September 26.
4. Which American fast food chain specializes in sandwiches made of thinly sliced roast beef?

Answer: Arby's

The first Arby's restaurant was established in Boardman, Ohio on July 23, 1964 by Forrest and Leroy Raffel (aka the Raffel Brothers). The franchise was named Arby's to honor the names of the founders (R.B.'s). The logo for Arby's features a cowboy hat with the name of the franchise placed in the middle of it. Arby's gained notoriety for offering sandwiches made from thinly sliced roast beef.

The establishment would eventually serve other sliced meats such as ham, turkey, cheesesteak and various Italian meats.

The photo is of a jalapeno roast beef version of their slider sandwiches.
5. What do Italians call a slice of bread covered with diced tomatoes, onions and sometimes even meats?

Answer: bruschetta

Bruschetta consists of grilled or toasted garlic bread which is topped with olive oil. Bruschetta is often served as an appetizer, with toppings as simple as onions and tomatoes like in the photograph. Bruschetta can also be topped with various meats, such as prosciutto which are thin slices of dry-cured ham. Carpaccio are slices of various raw meats, which can be either beef, salmon or tuna. Cacciucco is a type of Italian stew consisting of seafood, including various fish, clams, mussels, shrimp and calamari.
6. This slice of pie is made with strawberries and a plant with an edible red stem. Which of these could it be?

Answer: rhubarb

Rhubarb is a stalk vegetable with stems that are naturally a red/pink color. The stem of the rhubarb plant has a very tart flavor and is used in making many different types of fruit based pies, such as the strawberry rhubarb pie in the photograph. However, while the stem of rhubarb is edible, its leaves are considered to be toxic.

The leaves contain a substance called oxalic acid, which could increase the risk of developing kidney stones or other kidney ailments if too much is ingested.
7. A popular Hawaiian snack known as musubi is made using slices of a certain canned meat invented in 1937. Can you name it?

Answer: Spam

SPAM or spiced ham was invented by the Hormel Foods Corporation in 1937. SPAM is often seen as junk food, as it contains a lot of fat and sodium. However, since fresh meat was sometimes hard to ship to soldiers, SPAM became very popular during World War II, especially on the Pacific front. On the mainland, SPAM was distributed to the Japanese internment camps.

This led to the creation of spam musubi, a snack food featuring a slice of SPAM placed on top of a bed of white rice, which is wrapped with a piece of seaweed (aka nori). Following the war, spam musubi became a popular snack food, especially in the state of Hawaii.
8. Perhaps you'd like a slice of cheesecake! Which American state was the home of the first Cheesecake Factory?

Answer: California

In 1972, Michigan natives Evelyn and Oscar Overton moved into the Woodland Hills area of Los Angeles, California, where they established a small bakery. Six years later, their son David Overton would establish the first Cheesecake Factory restaurant in Beverly Hills, California.

It was not until 1992, that the Cheesecake Factory would begin to open more restaurants across the United States. Today there are more than 200 Cheesecake Factory restaurants nationwide. They currently have dozens of cheesecake varieties on their menu.
9. According to a slogan for Katz' Delicatessen in New York City, which type of sliceable meat could you send to the "boys in the army"?

Answer: salami

Katz's Delicatessen is located in the Lower East Side region of Manhattan, New York City. Established in 1888, Katz's Delicatessen specializes in kosher meats such as salami (depicted in the photograph). In support of the American troops during World War II, Katz's Delicatessen offered the opportunity for customers to ship their meats to the troops at American bases around the world.

The advertising slogan, "Send a salami to your boy in the army" was created to support this initiative. Katz's gained even more notoriety in 1989, when it was featured in the infamous "I'll have what she's having" scene during the movie "When Harry Met Sally".
10. If you insist that the best food is still sliced bread, then why not try this type of bread served at Outback Steakhouse. What kind of bread is it?

Answer: Honey Wheat Bushman

Outback Steakhouse is a chain of Australian themed barbecue restaurants. The first Outback Steakhouse was established in 1988 not in Australia, but in Tampa, Florida, USA. Some of the restaurant's most notable menu items include the Bloomin' Onion and its signature Honey Wheat Bushman bread, which is often served as a complimentary appetizer.

The batter is normally mixed with cocoa powder and molasses to create its dark brown color. If you wanted to bake your own, the recipe can be found on various cooking websites.
