Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the last name of the founder of Glenfiddich?

Answer: Grant

William Grant wsa born in 1839 in Dufftown, Scotland. It was his dream to build his own distillery. In 1886, he bought some land in the area of the River Fiddich in Speyside, in the heart of the Scottish Highlands.
2. What year did the Glenfiddich Distillery open?

Answer: 1887

The Grant family built the Glenfiddich Distillery with their own hands, with the help of only one stonemason. It took them about 18 months, and the first spirit flowed from the stills on Christmas Day 1887.
3. The water from which springs are used to make Glenfiddich whisky?

Answer: Robbie Dhu Springs

The single malt Scotch whisky created by the Grant family was truly exceptional. The combination of the crystal clear water of Robbie Dhu Springs, the barley, pure Highland air, and the unusually small stills was what Grant believed made this possible. Five generations later, Glenfiddich is still made in the same place and same way with the same water source.
4. What part of the distillery is the malted barley and hot water mixed?

Answer: Mashtun

The hot water is added to the mashing machine, along with the grist and forms a type of porridge and is swept into one of the mashtuns or mash tuns. It then becomes a sweet liquid called "wort".
5. What are the fermentation vessels called?

Answer: Washbacks

The washbacks are big wooden barrels where the yeast ferments the wort to a weak form of alcohol.
6. What metal are the stills made of?

Answer: Copper

The copper pot stills are unusually small and are still tended by Glenfiddich's own coppersmith.
7. A spirit is not considered to be legally Scotch whisky until it has matured for at least 12 years.

Answer: False

Scotch whisky has only to mature for 3 years to be condidered legal; however, the Glenfiddich Distillery allows theirs to mature for 12 years to be considered in prime condition.
8. The alcohol that evaporates through the oak barrels during maturation is known as "the_____share".

Answer: Angels'

About 16 million liters of Scotch whisky evaporate into the ether every year.
9. What Glenfiddich product is often considered the world's most popular single malt Scotch whisky?

Answer: Glenfiddich Special Reserve

Glenfiddich Special Reserve is matured for 12 years, and is available in over 180 countries, and is the only Highland single malt to be distilled, matured, and bottled at its own distillery.
10. What is the oldest malt whisky ever to be bottled?

Answer: 1937

Glenfiddich 1937 was matured in cask 843 in the year of King George's coronation. William Grant created this cask with extra strength to keep the "angels" from taking too much of their share.
