2. Pilates classes are a popular form of exercise. Is it true that Pilates is named after its inventor, Joseph Pilates?

Answer: Yes

Joseph Pilates was born in Germany in 1883. The principles of his fitness method, which he called contrology, are contained in two books he published one in 1934 and one in 1945. Joseph Pilates believed that physical and mental health were connected and so the Pilates exercises are designed to improve both the mind and the body.
3. There are many exercise classes available called HIIT classes. What does HIIT stand for?

Answer: High Intensity Interval Training

High Intersity Interval Training or HIIT is a cardiovascular exercise which alternates short periods of intense activity with lower intensity recover periods. The most common types of exercise used in a HIIT program are running and cycling. 4. A popular class for many people is spinning. What type of equipment does a spinning class usually use?

Answer: Exercise Bikes

Spinning, also called 'Indoor Cycling' is an exercise class using static bikes, often called 'exercise bikes'. A spinning class normally has participants in a variety of positions on the bike designed to simulate different aspects of cycling in the real world such as sprinting or climbing hills. Participants can often set different levels of resistance on the bikes meaning that people of differing abilities can take part in a class together.
5. Which class features positions such as 'downward facing dog' and 'half-cobra'?

Answer: Yoga

6. Where would you be most likely to find an Aquafit class being held?

Answer: Swimming Pool

Aquafit classes involve doing aerobic exercises whilst in water. Moving against the water provides greater resistance than moving in air and thus helps to strengthen the muscles as well as making the body work harder.
7. Kettlebells is a class involving musical instruments.

Answer: False

Although the term 'kettlebell' sounds as though it could be a musical instrument it is in fact a term used to describe a type of weight. Exercising with kettlebells involve swinging and lifting the weights in various ways to strengthen muscles.

9. A form of exercise featuring different ways of getting on and off a box is usually known as what type of class?

Answer: step

The step class was developed by Gin Miller in the late 1980s. She developed the class after being told to step up and down on a milk crate to strengthen the muscles around her knee as rehab for an injury. A step class is often done to music with the timing of the stepping moves fitting to the beat of the music. Sometimes the steps are called 'Reebok steps' as this was the first major company to start manufacturing them.
10. You would expect an abs-blast class to focus on the muscles located where in the body?

Answer: Stomach

Abs is short for abdominal muscles which are the main muscles in the stomach area. An abs-blast class uses various exercises designed to tone and strengthen the abdominal muscles.
