Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What are daikaiju?

Answer: the monsters that attack the ship

A daikaiju is a monster. There are ten daikaiju in Tsuro of the Sea. At the start of the game, there are anywhere between four and six daikaiju that are placed on the board. During the game, the daikaiju can be moved, rotated, added, or eliminated.

The original starting position of the daikaiju is determined by rolling the dice. The two numbers on the dice indicate the starting coordinates of the daikaiju.
2. Which player makes the first turn?

Answer: the oldest person

The person who is the oldest is the first to place his ship anywhere on the board. The player to that person's left goes next, and so on until the last player places his ship. When the actual game begins, the oldest person is the first to roll the dice and move his ship.
3. What colors are the dice?

Answer: blue and gold

The two dice are blue and gold in color. This matches up with the numbers on the board. The numbers one through six on one side of the board are gold; the numbers one through six on the adjacent side are blue. If, during the course of the game, a player is required to roll only one die, then it does not matter which color die is being rolled.

It only matters when determining coordinates for the monsters.
4. When rolling the two dice, if a player rolls certain numbers the monsters move. Which is one of those numbers?

Answer: six

When a player takes his turn, the first thing he must do is roll the dice. Then, add the two numbers shown on the dice. If the total is six, seven, or eight, then the monsters must move. This is done by rolling one die. Monsters move in the appropriate direction based on the number.

For example, if the die reads two, and the symbol on the monster tile shows a two on the right-hand side, then the player must be that monster to its right. Not all monsters have the same number on the same side.

For example, another monster could have the two on the bottom, meaning move the monster one space below where it currently is. If the number is in the upper-right corner, then that means the monster must be rotated.
5. Once a wake tile is placed, it can never be removed from the board.

Answer: False

It is possible for a wake tile to be removed. This is done if players are required to add a monster to the game. Suppose a player was to roll a gold one and a blue two. This means the player places a monster on the board where the gold one and the blue two intersect. If there is a wake tile there, the tile is removed and replaced by the monster. If a player is on that square, the player is eliminated.
6. Assuming monsters are being used during the game, at least three monsters must remain on the board at all times.

Answer: True

Three monsters must be on the board at all times. This is to make sure there does not reach a point in the game in which there are no monsters on the game. If there are less than three monsters on the board, then monsters must be added until there are three of them on the board.

This is done by rolling the two dice. The numbers on the dice will show where the monster is to be placed. If a person is on a space that the monster is being placed on, then that person is eliminated. There is an optional rule that states that players do not have to play with the monsters; this optional rule is given if the players want to play without any random elements.
7. Suppose a player needs to move the monsters. That player rolls a die and the number shown is six. What happens?

Answer: A monster is added to the game.

If the die shows a six, then the player must add a monster to the board. This is done in the same manner as placing the monsters at the beginning of the game. The only exception is if all ten monsters are already on the board.
8. The number of monsters that players place at the beginning of a game is dependent on which factor?

Answer: the number of players

Anywhere between four and six monsters are placed at the beginning of a game. The exact number depends on the number of people playing. If there are 2-4 players, then six monsters are placed. If there are 5-6 players, then five monsters are placed. If there are 7-8 players, then four monsters are placed. No more than eight players can play this game.
9. Suppose Player A forces Player B off the board. This results in Player B losing the game. What can Player A do now?

Answer: See Player B's wake tiles and chose whether Player A wants any of those.

If Player A forces Player B off the board, then Player A can collect none, some, or all of Player B's wake tiles. A player can only have three wake tiles in his hand (obviously excluding the brief time between a player placing a tile and then drawing another tile from the draw pile). Since Player A places the tile that eliminated Player B, then Player A has two wake tiles whereas Player B has three wake tiles.

After seeing Player B's tiles, Player A may choose which tiles he wants. The remaining tiles (whether they originally belonged to Player A or Player B) get discarded.
10. What happens if all remaining players get eliminated on the same turn?

Answer: There is a tie.

The rules state that if all remaining players get eliminated on the same turn, then there is a tie. This is possible in a couple of ways. To get eliminated, a player has to either get attacked by a monster or move off the edge of the board. If a player lays down a wake tile, and one of those two things happens to both players, then they are both be eliminated.

However, that does not mean a loss for either player but rather a tie.
