Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I want to put a small attractive tree in my front garden. Which is most suitable?

Answer: Rowan

An oak would be far too big, as would a tulip tree eventually, although it is a great tree for larger gardens. Weeping willows are huge, and can cause problems with foundations if planted anywhere near a house. The rowan, or mountain ash, is a very attractive small to medium sized tree, with a good crop of berries in autumn, in red, yellow, pink or white, depending on the variety.
2. Which of these should I NOT plant in my rockery?

Answer: Abelia

Abelias are lovely flowering shrubs, but not small enough for a rockery. The others are low, spreading alpines suitable for larger rockeries.
3. I wish to add some attractive foliage to a shady corner. What would be a good plant?

Answer: Hosta

Cannas have stunning leaves, but need sun. Dicentras are lovely plants for shade, but mainly planted for their flowers, Nepeta is catmint, and another sun-lover. Hostas come in a huge range of sizes and colours, and they all have beautiful leaves. Some will tolerate sun, but most are happiest in shade.
4. I am creating a blue and white border. Which of these flowers would fit in best?

Answer: Agapanthus

Agapanthus is a beautiful bulb which has blue and white varieties. The other three have varieties with flowers ranging from cream through yellow and orange to red.
5. I have an area of acid soil around the trunks of two mature pine trees, and I am making a shrub border for lime-hating plants. Which of these would be happier elsewhere?

Answer: Lilac

Lilac is one of the few shrubs that prefer limey soil. The other three, along with rhododendrons and azaleas, are lime-haters and will do well in my new border.
6. Which of these animal parts could I put in my English garden without any winter protection?

Answer: Elephant's ears

The ponytail palm is not hardy enough for England. Cat's paws are little ripples on water and also an Australian flower which is, however, not very hardy and needs protection from even mild frosts, and a frogmouth is an Australian bird.

Elephant's ears is the common name for Bergenia, with round leathery evergreen leaves.
7. Which of these is NOT appropriate for my dry sunny border?

Answer: Hydrangea

Rosemary, Lavender and Artemisia are all drought-tolerant Mediterranean shrubs. Hydrangeas would do better in cooler, less dry soil.
8. I know that spiky plants can be a useful way of deterring burglars from climbing into gardens. What could I use?

Answer: Berberis

Berberis is the only one with thorns. It comes in a variety of sizes, and can be green, gold, or purple leaved.
9. I don't want any poisonous plants in my garden, as I have young children. Which of these would be safest to plant?

Answer: Hawthorn

Yew, Foxglove and Laburnum are all highly poisonous, whereas in spring the new hawthorn leaves used to be eaten by children as a snack, known as 'bread and cheese'.
10. I am planting a fragrant courtyard, and want to add the flower that smells like chocolate. Which type of plant is it?

Answer: Cosmos

There is a chocolate mint scented geranium, but it only smells of mint, and has a chocolate coloured stripe on its leaves. Chocolate cosmos really does smell of chocolate, but only when you put your nose right into the flower, so don't get excited about wafts of chocolate smell drifting across the garden!
