Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A classic card game produced by Mattel since 1992 is the first out of my mystery toy box. In this game, players take turns attempting to get rid of all their cards. Do not forget to say a very important word when you only have one card left. What is the name of this card game in which you may see a blue five, a red skip, or a wild draw four?

Answer: Uno

Uno, from the Italian and Spanish for "one," is classified as part of the Crazy Eights family of card games. The game was first developed in Reading, Ohio, by a barber named Merle Robbins. In 1971 Robbins created the game to resolve an argument with his son about the rules of Crazy Eights.

The first copies were originally sold out of his barber shop. Every year the Uno World Championship is held in Moscow, Russia.
2. The next card game from my toy box is a game of fractured words. At least two players or teams are needed for play. Players must sound out several puzzles as quickly as possible in the allotted time frame. Small, unrelated words are put together to make a completely new phrase. "...It's not what you say, it's what you hear." What card game is this?

Answer: Mad Gab

Mad Gab was developed by Terry White and is licensed to Mattel. The game relies on the sounds of human speech, or phonetics. Decoding the puzzles is best done by reading or listening to the words out loud. Silence while playing the game makes winning much more difficult.
3. This card game seemingly "flies" out of the mystery box. According to the original rules, the object of the game is to be the first partnership to achieve a game score of 300 points. Players must attempt to capture "Count Cards" by taking tricks. What is this game which shares its name with a Eurasian crow and a playing piece found in chess?

Answer: Rook

Rook was introduced by Parker Brothers in 1906. Rook uses a specialized set of playing cards as it was developed as an alternative to the standard playing card deck. This was done to appeal to those cultures who looked down upon the standard deck with its negative associations with gambling and fortune telling.

There are 57 cards in a standard Rook deck. These are black, red, green, and yellow cards numbered 1-14 and one blue Rook Bird card.
4. Next out of my toy box is the ultimate game of trivia. Players attempt to be the first to gain all six wedges by correctly answering questions located on trivia cards. Many versions of this game have been made including Silver Screen, Baby Boomer, and TV editions. True or False: This game using cards is Trivial Pursuit.

Answer: True

Trivial Pursuit was first created in 1979 by Chris Haney and Scott Abbott in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. They decided to make the game after discovering their Scrabble set had pieces missing. In 2008, Hasbro bought the rights to the game for $80 million. A Trivial Pursuit television show aired in the United States from 1993 to 1995 hosted by Wink Martindale.
5. A card game based on a popular board game appears in the mystery box. Players start the game by separating the cards and determining if they wish to go to college or start immediately with a career. Each turn, players must decide if they wish to use cards to spend time or money. The game ends when the four cards with the letters E, L, F, and I are drawn from the deck. What card game has appeared now?

Answer: The Game of Life Card Game

There are four types of cards in this game: Career cards, Student/Married cards, Early Life cards, and Later Life cards. Developed by Hasbro, The Game of Life card game is recommended for ages nine and up and requires two to four players. The original The Game of Life board game was created in 1860 by Milton Bradley. It was first known as The Checkered Game of Life.
6. Here is a card game from my box that is great to play at any party. Originally published by Out of the Box, this game is designed for four to ten players. Each player starts the game with seven red cards. Each card has a name of a person, place, thing, or event. The judge for the round then picks a green card labeled with an adjective. Players must select their red card they think best fits with the green adjective card. What card game is being described?

Answer: Apples to Apples

Apples to Apples is "The Game of Hilarious Comparisons." The game has been adapted into many versions including Junior, Bible Edition, Disney Edition, and Sour Apples (in which judges must select both the best and worst of the cards presented to them). Apples to Apples was a 1999 Mensa Select prizewinner and was voted "Party Game of the Year" in December 1999.
7. The mystery toy box presents a game that can be played with a regular set of cards or with a specialized deck. Players take turns asking for cards such as "Tuna," "Sharks," and "Rainbow Trout" from their opponents in an attempt to gather sets of four. If the opponent does not have the card, the player must select one card from the central "pond" of cards. The player with the most sets wins the game. What card game has now emerged from the mystery box?

Answer: Go Fish

Go Fish, also known as Goldfish or simply Fish, is a quick and easy game for any age. However, the game does involve some strategy. It is suggested that when a player picks a card from the "pond" that they do not currently possess in their hand, the player should immediately ask for it on their next turn. Also, memorization of opponents' hands is key to winning.

This game is honor based - a player could easy lie about what is in their hand.
8. The mystery box is growing fatigued. Only a few more cards games are left in its depths. This game of cards forces players to find a connection between three separate objects located on "Threezer" cards. Different categories include entertainment, sports and recreation, and academics. What game of common bonds is this?

Answer: TriBond

TriBond was developed by Tim Walsh, Ed Muccini, and Dave Yearick. They first came up with the idea for the game in 1987 using Trivial Pursuit as their inspiration. They wanted a game that was not just plain trivia but still had an intellectual twist. TriBond was initially difficult to market but by 1996 had sold over a million copies.
9. The next card game out of the box is Top Trumps. Similar to the card game War, the object of Top Trumps is to be the first to win every one of the cards. This is done by having the highest value of the statistic called in the round. The version of Top Trumps the mystery box presented has statistics such as Magic, Wisdom, and Cunning. What version of Top Trumps is this that includes characters Luna Lovegood, Dolores Umbridge, and Severus Snape?

Answer: Harry Potter

There are several versions of Harry Potter Top Trumps including sets based on the fourth through seventh films. The original Top Trumps were first released in 1977 by a company known as Dubreq. The game gained popularity in the United Kingdom during the 1970s and 1980s as a fun playground activity.

This was especially true for young boys which resulted in the release of more sets themed with military weapons, race cars, and other forms of transportation.
10. The final card game out of my mystery toy box comes from the makers of Cranium. In this game, competitors attempt to get rid of their cards by building sets and playing action cards. Sets can be created though spelling words, completing puzzles, matching instruments, and adding to eleven. Printed on transparent cards, the last game is called what?

Answer: Zigity

Zigity, "the outrageous card game of crazy twists," was sold exclusively at Starbucks. In 2004, the game received the Oppenheim Gold Seal Award. Zigity is recommended for ages eight and up and for two or more players. Play time takes about ten minutes.
