Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In this game players have to determine who the murderer is, where the murder took place and the murder weapon used. What's this classic game of bluffing and investigating?

Answer: Clue/Cluedo

Known as Clue in North America, this game was originally created in 1943 in the UK and has evolved into the game that up to six people can play, assuming the role of one of the suspects and rolling dice to move around rooms of a large mansion. When players enter a room, they can then ask a question to determine the killer, the room where the crime took place and the murder weapon used.

It is a game of deduction, investigation, bluffing and paying attention to the information shared by other players.
2. This is a strategic guessing game to find your opponent's fleet before they find and sink yours. What's the name of this game?

Answer: Battleship

Battleship is a two-player guessing game. Each player has a grid in front of them that the other player can't see, the grid is marked by letters and numbers and each player places a number of different sized boats on the grid. They then take turns guessing places on the grid where they think the opponents boats are placed. Each player must answer honestly if a boat has been found and the first player to find all the hidden boats wins the game.

It originated as a pencil and paper game from the first World War and has evolved to several different ways to play including a plastic board game and electronic versions.
3. There are multiple versions of this incredibly popular property trading board game, can you name it?

Answer: Monopoly

The object of Monopoly is to make as much money as possible by rolling dice to travel around a board and at first, to land on as much property as possible and buy it. Once a player buys a piece of property, they can progress to building homes and hotels on that property and when other players land on it, they must pay rent depending on how built up that property is. Monopoly can be traced back to 1903 and was based on a game called The Landlord's Game.

There are different variations of rules that can be employed while playing the game such as how property is dispersed, taxes paid etc... and there are many, many different themes available.

It seems if there is a movie or TV show, Hasbro has made it into a themed Monopoly game - some examples include Star Wars Monopoly, Walking Dead Monopoly, Golden Girls Monopoly....you get the picture.
4. Remove the troublesome objects from the body without touching and hurting it. What's the name of this game for players with a steady hand?

Answer: Operation

Operation is a game that tests hand-eye coordination by having players try to remove small objects with tweezers from a human body named "Cavity Sam" without touching the sides of the cavities where the objects are placed. The game is battery operated and set up so that if the player touches the metal sides, Sam's nose lights up and a buzzer sounds.

The player then loses their turn. The game has some funny names for the objects and body parts such as writer's cramp, which is a pencil in the forearm, bread basket which is a slice of bread in the stomach and broken heart, which is a heart with a crack in it in the chest cavity.

In 2020 Hasbro introduced a new version of the game called Operation Pet Scan where players remove objects from a dog.
5. Remove a small pointy stick and try not to knock down any marbles. What's this game called?

Answer: KerPlunk

KerPlunk is a children's game that takes a long time to set up! The game is played using a plastic tube with holes in it, straws and passed through all the holes such that they form a blockage that marbles cannot pass through. A number of marbles are dropped into the tube and players take turns removing straws one by one.

The player with the least amount of marbles wins the game. The game is named because of the sound of the marbles falling.
6. Outsmart your opponents by building words that give you the most points. What's this game where it pays to know how to spell unusual words?

Answer: Scrabble

Scrabble is a word game for two to four players. Players play on a large square grid and the object of the game is to place words on the grid and collect points. Each letter has a point value, with letters that are less commonly used having higher point values (Q and J for example).

In addition to each letter having a point value, some of the squares on the board are special squares that give extra points (for example making a word on a double word score square). The object of the game is to make words with the most point values and the words have to be found in a dictionary to count!
7. Get around the board by choosing cards that give you instructions but don't forget to apologize to your opponents if you get a card that allows you to make them start over again! What's this game called?

Answer: Sorry!

This board game is based on the Indian board game Pachisi and the object is to race around a board and get your pieces home before the other players. Two to four people can play and each player takes turns drawing cards that have numerical instructions on them, for example move backwards four or move forward twelve. To get a piece in the game, a player needs to draw a card with the number one or two on it and there is a Sorry! card that can be drawn that gives the player the ability to take a playing piece from any other player that is on the board and send it back to the start. Different editions have slight variations on the classic rules and an electronic version was introduced in 1998.
8. Can you name the game where you try to gobble up as many marbles as you can?

Answer: Hungry Hungry Hippos

This is a fast, fun, fast-paced game that uses no strategy at all except to hit a lever on a plastic hippo as fast as possible. When players hit the lever, the hippos head extends and opens, allowing the hippo to gobble up marbles placed on the plastic playing area. Two to four players can play, the hippos are all different colors and have their own names (originally Lizzie, Henry, Homer and Harry).

In 2015 the very first Annual Hungry Hungry Hippos World Championship was held in Indiana.
9. A judge determines the best red card word that fits a selected green card word or "Cards Against Humanity" but clean, as my daughter likes to call it. What is this hilarious family card game called?

Answer: Apples to Apples

Apples to Apples is a card matching/answer judging type game that between four and ten people can play. One person is called the judge and takes a green card with a word on it and places it for everyone else to see. The other players have a number of red cards that only they look at, that contain words on them. Based on the chosen green card, each player has to choose the most amusing corresponding red card, places it face down so the judge can't see who has given which red card. The judge then chooses the best match. The winner of the matching red card is the next judge. The object, after a certain number of rounds, is the person who has the most matches.

The adult card game "Cards Against Humanity" which is offensive or funny depending on your point of view is often compared however is not created by the same company as Apples to Apples.
10. A game where each player takes turns asking questions to try and determine their opponents chosen mystery character. What's this fun two-person game?

Answer: Guess Who?

This is a two player game where each player has a board with twenty-four faces on it containing various accessories, hair color and length, eye color, facial hair etc... Each player chooses one of those characters and the other player has to try to guess which character they chose by asking questions to narrow down the choices. Players ask if the character has a beard, is wearing glasses etc... and depending on the response, will narrow down the list of available characters until they're certain who their opponent has chosen.

The game has been around since 1979 and has more recently been criticized for it's bias toward white and male characters. In 2012 a six-year old allegedly wrote to Hasbro asking why there were only five female characters to choose from.
