Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Silly rabbit, Trix are for kids!" But the manufacturers of Trix certainly wouldn't argue if the adults ate some, they'll just produce more. But what company was the maker of Trix cereal?

Answer: General Mills

Trix was first formulated in 1954, and the commercial's original rabbit mascot was a puppet. Had the original slogan, "Rabbits are supposed to like carrots. But I hate carrots. I like Trix," stuck with the marketing department, we wouldn't have been graced with the now classic "Silly Rabbit" slogan many people remember as much as the cereal itself.
2. "He likes it! Hey Mikey!" is not so much a slogan; it's more a memorable line from the commercial for Life cereal. What cereal company introduced Life cereal in the 1960s?

Answer: Quaker

Quaker brought us Life cereal in 1961. The Mikey commercial campaign started in 1972, and ran in its original form for 12 years, one of the longest commercial campaigns with one commercial in history. John Gilchrist played Mikey when he was 3 1/2 years old, and his actual brothers are the other two in the commercial.
3. Have you ever played Jenga with cereal bowls? The people who advertised for Total cereal have. A commercial campaign showed how much cereal you would need to eat to match the nutritional value of Total, and with stacks of bowls twelve high, it was a nice balancing act. What company brought us Total cereal?

Answer: General Mills

"You'd have to eat twelve bowls to get the same nutritional value you get from one bowl of Total." This campaign began in the mid 1980s and ran for about a decade. Total was introduced by General Mills in 1961.
4. One of the larger sized cereals is Honey-Comb cereal, a fact the manufacturers advertised well after it was introduced in 1965. What company was the original producer of Honey-Comb cereal?

Answer: Post

Post Honey-Comb featured an ad jingle with the lyrics, "Honeycomb's big. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's not small. No, no, no. Honeycomb's got... a big, big bite! Big, big taste and a big, big bite!" What Saturday morning cartoon watching youngster can resist that?
5. Product 19 was a cereal designed to help people lose weight, as it featured high nutritional value in one bowl. What company introduced Product 19 to the world?

Answer: Kellogg's

Kellogg's Product 19 was the counterattack to Post's Total cereal which also was created as a one-bowl multi-vitamin cereal. But Product 19 languished in sales for many years behind Total, and in 2016, manufacture of it was discontinued.
6. Cap'n Crunch cereal is aptly named; it is a crunchy cereal and was originally made with that trait in mind. Horatio Q. Crunch has been pushing this cereal and its many offspring for over half a decade. Who is the cereal manufacturer that created Cap'n Crunch cereal?

Answer: Quaker

Quaker introduced Cap'n Crunch in 1963 after polls of children showed young ones dislike sogginess in their cereal (who doesn't, unless all you eat is oatmeal?). Horatio Magellan Crunch is the full name of the mascot for the cereal, used since the cereal's inception. The original voice of the captain was done by Daws Butler, also the voice of Yogi Bear.
7. Sold to Kellogg's in 2000, this company was the original producer of GO LEAN Crunch cereal. A cereal known for a high protein and high fiber content, what is the cereal's original manufacturer?

Answer: Kashi

Kashi is still on the label of the cereal, but all operations are through Kellogg's. GO LEAN Crunch touts 8 grams of fiber and 9 grams of protein, at least double the average amount in other cereals.
8. A series of monster cereals was unveiled in the 1970s, beginning with Count Chocula and Franken Berry in 1971. What company is the first producer of the "monster" cereals?

Answer: General Mills

General Mills also put out Boo Berry cereal in 1973, and Fruit Brute cereal in 1974. The little known Yummy Mummy cereal brand came out in 1988, but was short lived, even shorter than than the longevity of Fruit Brute.
9. The Chex brand of cereals has a large family tree and a long history, going back to 1937, when Wheat Chex was introduced to the public. That was followed by Rice Chex in 1950 and Corn Chex in 1958. Who was the manufacturer of all of these and several more in the Chex line?

Answer: Ralston

Though General Mills acquired the Chex line of cereals in 1997, it was Ralston (of Ralston-Purina) that developed most of the ones we know today. The Chex brand got a boost when they introduced a recipe for Chex Party Mix on the side of its boxes in the 1950s. That has now blossomed into pre-made mixes you can buy in numerous flavors in the snack aisle, everything from Cheddar to caramel.
10. Kix was a simple cereal introduced in 1937, and it's a simple cereal today; as the slogan says: "Kid tested, mother approved". But what was the manufacturer that brought us Kix?

Answer: General Mills

General Mills' version of Kix has not changed since the earliest experiments with puffing devices that made the cereal light yet crunchy. At 3 grams of sugar per serving, it was and still is enjoyable for kids, and an ease on the conscience of moms everywhere.
