Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Some people's dream accompaniment to fish and chips and other people's nightmare: What sort of peas are used to make mushy peas?

Traditional mushy peas are made by soaking a pan of marrowfat peas overnight with salt, which forms a thick grey soup. They are then heated with sodium bicarbonate to prevent fermentation.
2. When they are filleted and battered these fish are a very similar size, but which chip shop favorite is largest when alive?

Answer: Cod

Your average wild North Sea cod is about 1m (3ft) long and weighs about 10kg. However, specimens up to 2m (6ft) long and weighing over 100kg have been recorded!
3. In Britain, döner kebaps are an extremely popular way to end a night out. What meat is the most common ingredient in döner meat?

Döner kebaps originated in Turkey in the 18th century. The spiced lamb is cooked on a vertical spit. It is usually served in a pita bread with salad and a choice of sauces.
4. Which variety of potato is used most to make chips in most British chip shops, leading to it being the most grown variety in the UK?

Answer: Maris Piper

There are 8500 fish and chip shops in the UK. Over 10% of all potatoes and 25% of white fish sold in the UK are sold at fish and chip shops.
5. Which chip shop ubiquity used to have great value in many ancient empires, so much so that Roman soldiers were given a special allowance for this commodity?

Answer: Salt

Salt was a valuable commodity for preserving and flavouring meat (before the age of refrigeration). The word "salary" comes from the Latin "salarium" (derived from "sal" (salt)) which was the name of this allowance.
6. This alarmingly red food is sold in many British chip shops. What is a "saveloy"?

Answer: A spiced sausage

A saveloy is a spiced pork sausage, which is made mostly from pig's entrails, including brains!
7. Another chip shop delicacy is "cod roe", also known as "poor man's caviar". What is this battered treat?

Answer: Cod eggs

Cod roe is made from the fully ripe ovaries or unfertilised eggs of female cod. Caviar is significantly more expensive than cod roe and is made from sturgeons' eggs.
8. Which of these popular British soaps revolves around life in a fish and chip shop?

Answer: None of these

Having worked in a chip shop in the West Midlands for two years, I can tell you that interesting things do happen. However, the chip shop setting would probably not be glamorous enough for a soap opera!
9. Owning a fish and chip shop can be a very profitable business. Which British entrepreneur made his fortune by opening a chain of fish and chip shops?

Answer: Harry Ramsden

Harry Ramsden's is the largest fish and chip shop chain in the world, comprising of 170 stores, serving over 10 million people per year! Michael Fish is a British weather man and the other two answers are terrible fish puns on famous celebrities!
10. The world of chippies has not been without controversy. With which country did Britain fight the "Cod Wars" over fishing rights of North Sea cod?

Answer: Iceland

It may sound ridiculous, but North Sea cod are important resources for both Iceland and Britain. The Cod Wars were a series of confrontations between Britain and Iceland between the 1950s and 1970s. They were caused by Iceland declaring an "Exclusive Economic Zone", extending 200 miles outside of Icelandic waters. British trawler nets in this area were cut, leading Britain to send in Royal Navy warships to prevent further harassment of British fishing vessels. Eventually a diplomatic compromise was reached and 12 British trawlers are allowed to fish in these waters.
