Ali Hakim - "Oklahoma!"'s Underrated Character Quiz

This is my quiz on Ali Hakim, a character I will be playing soon in a stage production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Oklahoma!", and my favourite musical character. Enjoy it, it's not too difficult.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What nationality is Ali Hakim?

Answer: Persian

Ali is frequently described by other characters as "that ole Persian peddler", although he is sometimes, confusingly, performed with an Italian-American accent.
2. What is Ali's first set line?

Answer: "Alright, alright, if the eggbeater don't work, I give you something just as good."

He is being chased on at this point by Aunt Eller. Ali's voice has already been heard from off-stage on two occassions; speaking to Ado Annie and speaking to Aunt Eller.
3. Ali has a song, but what is it entitled?

Answer: It's a Scandal! It's a Outrage!

This song was cut from the film in 1955, presumably because it was primarily speach-orientated and slowed down the pace of the rest of the show. The gramatical error is deliberate, because Hammerstein wrote his scripts phonetically.
4. How much of his song does Ali actually sing (not speak)?

Answer: Two lines

The lines are: "You're a mess and in less than a year, by heck, there's a baby on your shoulder making bubbles on your neck." The rest of Ali's lines are spoken in rhythm.
5. According to Ali's song, what is a scandal and an outrage?

Answer: "How a girl gets a husband today."

They are the words of the song. In the play, Ali has found himself agreeing to marry Ado Annie, persuaded by the latter's father's revolver.
6. One of Ali's most famous moments is the "Persian Goodbye". How do the stage directions for this read?

Answer: "He takes her hand, twirls her around into an embrace and plants a long kiss on the lips."

This was made different in the film. Some poeple attend performances of "Oklahoma!" just to watch Ali Hakim give Ado Annie a Persian Goodbye.
7. Who resists a goodbye from Ali?

Answer: Will Parker

Will's immortal line is: "No you don't, I just saw the last one."
8. How much does Ali bid on Ado Annie's lunch at the Box Social?

Answer: Fifty-one dollars

He bids all this money, gulping, to outbid Will. Will can have Ado Annie, who has been promised to Ali, if he gets $50 in cash. If he spends it, he won't have the money. Ali doesn't want Annie.
9. How many people does Ali kiss in the course of the play?

Answer: Two

Laurey on the hand and Ado Annie on the lips.
10. Who does Ali marry?

Answer: Gertie Cummings

When asked how long they have been married, Ali replies: "Four days." Thank you very much for doing my quiz. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed making it.
