Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Besides an elephant, what other animal(s) are named in the opening number?

Answer: cattle

According to Merriam-Webster's online dictionary a "maverick" is "an unbranded range animal, especially a motherless calf". It can also refer to a free-spirited person.
2. There are lots of animals named in "The Surrey With The Fringe On Top". How many to be exact? (Not counting the human animals mentioned, and count each type of animal only once.)

Answer: 11

In order the animals mentioned are:
1) horses
2) chicks
3) ducks
4) geese
5) cats
6) dogs
7) birds
8) frogs
9) toads
10) cows
11) a lark
3. What item of clothing does Aunt Eller say she'll wear if Curly asks her to the box social along with Laurey?

Answer: her fascinator

A "fascinator" is a large barrette-like hair-piece with lots of frills and flowers.
4. What are the two dances that Will Parker introduces to the cowboys when he returns from Kansas City?

Answer: the two-step and ragtime

Will Parker is hoping that Ado Annie's father will keep his promise to let them marry because he won $50 on his trip to Kansas City. The only problem is that he spent the $50 on presents for Ado Annie and her father.
5. In the song "I Cain't Say No", what kind of furniture does Ado Annie sing about "setting" on?

Answer: a velveteen settee

A "settee" is a medium-sized sofa with a back and arms.
6. What does Will say he'll do if Ado Annie won't kiss him?

Answer: jump in the crik and die

Poor Will! He has to wait until the box social to finally get that kiss.
7. What is the name of the girl that Curly uses to make Laurey jealous?

Answer: Gertie Cummings

Gertie Cummings ends up marrying Ali Hakim. After they've been married four days, Ali Hakim quips, "Four days with that laugh should count like a golden wedding."
8. In the song "Many A New Day", Laurey tries to convince the other girls that she doesn't care if Curly is going with "that Cummings gal". Which of the following things does she NOT say will happen before she "weeps into her tea"?

Answer: Many a bright year will pass

Laurey isn't fooling anyone with her protestations. Everyone knows she's head over heels for Curly.
9. What happens in less than a year, according to Ali Hakim in "It's A Scandal! It's A Outrage!"?

Answer: "There's a baby on your shoulder making bubbles on your neck."

For some reason this song was not used in the 1955 film version of "Oklahoma!". It's too bad because Eddie Albert would have done a fantastic job with it.
10. In the song, "People Will Say We're In Love" what is one thing that Laurey doesn't ask Curly not to do?

Answer: "Don't dance all night with me."

This was sort of a trick question. "Don't dance all night with me" is in the song, but Curly sings that line, not Laurey.
11. "Pore Jud Is Daid" is one of my favorite songs from the score. In it, Curly taunts Jud about what his funeral would be like. Which of the following is something that Curly says will happen at Jud's funeral?

Answer: His fingernails will be clean.

Again, a trick question of sorts. The other things are all mentioned by Jud, not Curly.
12. Another song not used in the 1955 film is "Lonely Room". It's too bad because this song lends a bit of sympathy to the otherwise menacing farmhand. Which of the following does Jud NOT say happens in the smokehouse?

Answer: A big rat is nibbling on a broom.

Perhaps Rod Steiger's vocal limitations was the reason this song was dropped?
13. According to "Out Of My Dreams" Laurey's friends tell her that she doesn't need something to tell her why she wants to fly into "his" arms. What is the "something" that she doesn't need?

Answer: Egyptian smelling salts

The Elixir of Egypt was supposed to help Laurey make up her mind between Jud and Curly.
14. The first act finale is a ballet originally choreographed by Agnes DeMille. It's the dream Laurey has after sniffing from the bottle of elixir. Which of the following statements is true about the dream ballet?

Answer: Jud kills Curly.

Originally, Oscar Hammerstein conceived Laurey's dream as a circus ballet.
15. At the beginning of Act II, we finally make it to the box social. Everyone is dancing and singing to "The Farmer And The Cowman". Which character defends the farmers and which character defends the cowboys, respectively?

Answer: Andrew Carnes and Aunt Eller

Historically, there was a lot of animosity between farmers and ranchers during the period of western settlement. One of the main issues was that farmers would put up fences that limited the movement of free-ranging cattle.
16. Which character originally purchased the "Little Wonder"?

Answer: Will Parker

Actually, Ali Hakim knew what the "Little Wonder" was, and wanted nothing to do with it when Will tried to sell it to him.
17. Aunt Eller claims during the auction that Ado Annie wins the prize because her basket sold for the most money. Did that actually turn out to be true?

Answer: No, Curley paid $53 for Laurey's basket, $2 more than Annie's

Ali Hakim outbids Will Parker for Ado Annie's lunch basket to get out of marrying her. Curly sells his saddle, his horse, and his gun to win Laurey's basket.
18. Which of the following is NOT one of the things Will has given up for Annie according to "All Er Nothin'"?

Answer: chewing tobacco

The original stage Ado Annie was Celeste Holm. This role made her a star on Broadway.
19. Laurey and Curly finally do get together, and Curly proposes to Laurey. This leads to a reprise of "People Will Say We're in Love". According to the reprise, what looks well on them?

Answer: starlight

I wonder if real Oklahoma cowboys and farm girls would have been quite as flowery and poetic as Laurey and Curly?
20. How many different types of crops are mentioned in the title song?

Answer: 7

The crops mentioned are:
1) barley
2) carrots
3) potatoes (pertayters)
4) spinach
5) tomatoes (termayters)
6) wheat
7) pasture

At least one person has mentioned both "flowers on the prairie" and "pasture for the cattle" as possibly being "crops". According to Merriam-Webster's online dictionary, a "crop" as related to farming is "a plant or animal or plant or animal product that can be grown and harvested extensively for profit or subsistence." The flowers mentioned obviously don't fit the definition. Now we come to "pasture". At first, I was pretty sure that "pasture" referred to the land the livestock grazed on. After looking up the word, I found that it can also refer to what is planted there to feed livestock. So, I've changed the answer to reflect this.
