Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There have been many artists who have also been family members. What was the first name of the brother of Jan van Eyck?

Answer: Hubert

These brothers pioneered oil painting. In fact, after Hubert's death in 1426, members of the local church in Ghent put his arm in a reliquary.
2. Another question about the Van Eycks, on what work did both of the brothers work?

Answer: The Ghent Altarpiece

Hubert started the monumental altarpiece, but he died and it was completed by Jan. All the other works were by Jan. One of my favorites is the "Arnolfini Marriage". This work has a convex mirror in the background, giving an inverted image of the couple posing.
3. Enough of the van Eycks. Who was Ghiberti's rival for the Florentine Baptistry doors ("The Gates of Paradise"), and what, equally important thing did he do?

Answer: Brunelleschi and the dome of the Florentine Cathedral

Brunelleschi's dome was the first large-scale dome built in Western Europe in over 1000 years. He had an innovative design" there were two domes, with a small interior dome which buttresses the larger external dome. All of the previous attempts to build a dome of that magnitude had failed.
4. He was essentially the pioneer of the Baroque style, and is most notable for his use of chiaroscuro, although he did not invent it. Who was this Italian artist?

Answer: Caravaggio

Carivaggio was forced to flee his native city, mainly because he murdered a person in a duel. Most of his better works come from the time when he was in permanent exile, during the last few years of his life.
5. Although it was developed in France, _______ was the first country to use the Neoclassical style extensively. Eventually during the French Revolution, France, primarily through David, regained the lead in Neoclassical art. What country's name belongs in the blank space?

Answer: The United States

The Federalists commissioned many Neoclassical paintings in an attempt to make them look like the new "aristocracy." The most famous American painting of this style is found on the one dollar bill.
6. Eugene Delacroix, a French artist of the ________ period is best known for his work "_____________". Which of these options correctly provides the missing period and title?

Answer: Romantic..."Liberty Leading the People"

This work shows the French Revolution of 1830, which removed Charles X, the last Bourbon king of France, from power. The work shows the different aspects of the French people being united by liberty, personified in female form, carrying the French Tricolor flag.

"Waterlilies" (a series of paintings) was painted by Monet, "The Death of Marat" by David, and "Aristotle Contemplating a Bust of Homer" by Rembrandt.
7. What is the only building designed by Christopher Wren in North America?

Answer: Academic Building at the College of William and Mary

This is the oldest continously used academic building in America.
8. What is the name of an Archaic Greek male statue?

Answer: Kouros

The kouros (pl. kuroi) was a male figure which was generally straight and had a smile as an expression. There works were relatively more abstract when compared to later Greek sculptures. Often the kouros and its female counterpart, the kore (pl. korai), were painted.
9. What is so special about "Fanny", by Chuck Close?

Answer: The painting is made entirely out of his fingerprints.

The full name of the painting is "Fanny/Fingerpainting". This black and white painting of an elderly woman who has had a tracheotomy hangs in the National Gallery of Art. It is about 8 ft tall and is composed entirely of Close's fingerprints.
10. What 20th century movement considered itself 'anti-art'?

Answer: Dada

The pioneers of this movement felt that a world which was capable of such destruction on the scale of that which occurred in World War I did not deserve art.
