Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Woman + Romance = ?
Answer: Womance
Womance is a close friendship between two ladies, though not in a romantic relationship despite that it has similar pronunciation to 'romance'. There are several films where womances are protrayed, including "Baby Mama", "The Women", "Bride Wars" and "Bridesmaids", as well as TV series "Laverne and Shirley" and "Mel & Sue". Womance is the female equivalent of bromance, which is a portmanteau of 'brother' and 'romance'. Womance also refers to a friendship between celebrities.
2. Movie + Marathon = ?
Answer: Moviethon
Moviethon is an event when televised movies are consecutively played for many hours, days, or even longer. Moviethons are common on movie channels, including HBO, Cinemax, and Encore. There are seasonal moviethons, such as Christmas movie marathons broadcasted on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
Moviethon may practically refer to consecutive movies played at the theater since it fits with the definition above minus 'televised'. The more appropriate term, in my opinion, would be "cinemarathon", portmanteau of 'cinema' and 'marathon'.
3. Fun + Complex = ?
Answer: Funplex
Funplex is a place where they feature lots of fun games and thrilling rides, including arcade games and go-karts. People play to win tickets, which are used to get things using tickets earned. Safari Land is an example of a funplex I went to. Some funplexes have a dining area where they serve good food, which would give the goers an extra mode of enjoyment.
4. Fan + Maniac = ?
Answer: Faniac
Faniacs are obsessed with things of which they are fans. Many sports team faniacs would watch them play a lot, hoping to win each game, as well as reading articles and looking at stats about the team a lot.
Faniacs of certain movie franchise such as Star Wars would watch those a ton of times while doing internet research about them. Sci fi faniacs would watch all of the science fiction movies and TV series, including Star Wars, Star Trek, Doctor Who, The X-Files, etc.
5. Slider + Curve = ?
Answer: Slurve
Slurve is a type of baseball pitch that is a slider that curves, a combination of slider and curve ball. Slurve can be used to fool hitter to think the ball is coming down the middle but then ball gently drops, causing a hitter to swing and miss. Notable slurve pitchers include Stephen Strasburg, Jose Fernandez, Kerry Wood, and Craig Kimbrel. Cy Young is the earliest known pitcher to utilize a slurve.
6. Whale + Dolphin = ?
Answer: Wholphin
Wholphin is a hybrid species obtained when a whale mates with a dolphin, specifically a male false killer whale and female bottlenose dolphin. Both whales and dolphins (therefore wholphins) are cetaceans, which is a class of sea mammals, meaning they have lungs (not gills) and they get pregnant as offspring grows inside them. Wholphin is extremely rare in the ecosystem.
7. Action + Adventure = ?
Answer: Actventure
Actionventure or actventure is a fusion film genre that combines combatic elements of action with travelling assets of adventure. Actventure films typically plot about a protagonist exploring and finding objects in several, usually exotic places while fighting the foes along the way. Examples of actventure film franchises are "Indiana Jones", "National Treasure" and "Mad Max".
8. West + East = ?
Answer: Weast
Weast is either of two directions that is west or east. The term can be used if they're not sure what direction they're going but sure it's west or east. I first saw the use of this term when I watched "Baseball Tonight" on ESPN years ago where I saw the sorted rankings of the teams coming from Eastern and Western divisions where it said 'Weast' in its name.
Weast can combine with north or south to form the direction that is either or. Northweast is either northwest or northeast, while southweast is either southwest or southeast. The sun rises and sets in the weast. During the Cold War when Germany was split into West Germany and East Germany, these two combined splitted countries were technically referred as Weast Germany.
9. Metal + Hardcore = ?
Answer: Metalcore
Metalcore is a musical style originated in the 1980s that fuses heavy metal, specifically extreme metal, with elements of hardcore punk. Metalcore bands include Earth Crisis, Killswitch Engage, and Bullet for My Valentine. Mathcore is a subgenre of metalcore, while deathcore is a fusion genre of death metal and hardcore.
10. Stay + Vacation = ?
Answer: Staycation
Staycation essentially refers to vacation in one's town that doesn't require travelling. The earliest reference to the word 'staycation' according to Wordspy.com was in 2003. It then became widespread in 2008 as summer travel season began as people would start to "vacation" in one's town instead of travelling for hundreds or thousands of miles to another state or country.
